How to Apply Osmo Polyx-Oil Tints Properly – A Complete Guide

Osmo Polyx-Oil Tints can create some of the most attractive coloured finishes available for wooden flooring, but pigmented hardwax oil needs more care during preparation and application than a standard clear finish.

The final colour does not come from the tin alone. Timber species, natural colour, density, age, porosity, sanding preparation and application technique can all change how the pigment is absorbed.

This means the same Tint can look noticeably different on two floors — and individual boards within the same floor may naturally take the colour differently.

This guide explains how we approach Osmo Polyx-Oil Tints, including test areas, sanding, contamination, floor-brush and white-pad application, plank versus herringbone, drying, topcoats and optional professional techniques for increasing pigment uptake.

Osmo Tints at a glance Always complete a representative test area first. Prepare the entire floor consistently. Keep freshly sanded timber completely clean. Stir the pigment thoroughly. For normal coloured flooring systems, apply one exceptionally thin coloured coat and allow approximately 24 hours drying with excellent ventilation before applying the appropriate protective topcoat.

Always Complete a Test Area First

This is one of the most important rules when working with pigmented oil.

Never rely solely on a colour chart, photograph or sample made from different timber.

Osmo itself recommends a trial application because the condition and characteristics of the wood affect the final result.

Pigment uptake can change according to:

  • Wood species.
  • Timber density.
  • Age of the floor.
  • Natural timber colour.
  • Moisture content.
  • Porosity and dryness.
  • Previous treatments or contamination.
  • Final sanding grit.
  • Application method.
Test the complete system Prepare a representative section exactly as the main floor will be prepared. Apply the Tint using the intended brush, white pad or machine method, allow it to dry fully and apply the proposed topcoat. Only approve the colour once the complete test system has dried.

If the main floor will be machine-buffed, machine-buff the test area. If you intend to water-pop the floor, water-pop the test area. If you intend to brush the Tint along the boards, use the same brush technique on the sample.

Sanding preparation must also be identical. A P100 test area may take considerably more pigment than timber finished to P150.

Application technique is part of the colour With pigmented oil, changing the sanding sequence, application tool or amount of product can change the finished appearance. Once the test area has been approved, reproduce that same process across the complete floor.

Keep the Freshly Sanded Floor Completely Clean

Once final sanding is complete, treat the bare timber as though the finishing process has already started.

Do not walk across the prepared floor in socks or bare feet, and avoid touching the timber with bare hands.

Natural skin oils, moisture and perspiration can contaminate absorbent timber and alter how pigment penetrates.

This can potentially leave:

  • Footprints.
  • Sock marks.
  • Handprints.
  • Knee marks.
  • Sweat droplets.
  • Uneven pigment absorption.

Floor finishing is physical work, and drops of perspiration can easily fall onto bare timber without being noticed.

A single sweat mark can become a colour mark Pigmented oil can highlight contamination that was almost invisible on bare timber. If sweat, water or skin contamination reaches the floor, deal with it before applying the Tint rather than assuming the colour will hide it.

Wear clean footwear with clean shoe covers when moving across the final-sanded floor.

Take additional care when kneeling, mixing products or working in warm conditions.

Think of final sanding as the first stage of finishing From the moment the last sanding pass is complete, anything that touches the bare timber can potentially influence the final colour.

How Should the Floor Be Sanded?

Sand progressively and consistently across the complete area.

Osmo's current guidance provides a useful distinction:

  • Around P100: generally increases pigment uptake and produces a stronger colour.
  • Around P120–P150: generally produces a softer and more harmonious colour.

The exact appearance should therefore be established during the test-area process.

Uneven sanding can create uneven colour Coarse scratches can hold additional pigment, while areas sanded considerably finer can absorb less. The complete floor should receive a consistent sanding sequence.

Once sanding is complete, vacuum thoroughly using effective dust extraction and keep the floor protected from contamination.

Stir Pigmented Oil Thoroughly

Pigments settle naturally within the container.

Stir the Tint thoroughly before application and continue to stir periodically during use.

Failure to redistribute settled pigment can result in colour variation between the beginning and end of the floor.

What Is the Best Way to Apply Osmo Tints?

Osmo supports Floor Brush, Finish Application Fleece and white-pad machine application for coloured Polyx-Oil.

For flooring, our preferred approaches are normally a floor brush on suitable straight plank floors or white-pad application where maximum control is required.

White Pad / Floor Machine

Particularly effective for large areas, herringbone, parquet and patterned flooring.

The white pad works the Tint into the timber while allowing the installer to spread pigment exceptionally thinly and consistently.

Osmo Floor Brush

Excellent on straight plank flooring because the finish can be applied along the boards and carefully laid off with the grain.

This gives excellent visual control over pigment distribution.

For smaller areas, a hand pad holder with a white application pad can be used to work the Tint manually.

Why We Generally Prefer a Brush or Pad to a Roller

Pigmented finishes show variations in application more readily than clear oil.

A floor brush allows the installer to control how much product is laid onto each plank and then lay the pigment off evenly in the direction of the timber.

A white pad gives even greater control because excess product can be spread across a wider area and worked extremely thinly into the surface.

This does not mean a roller can never be used where Osmo approves it, but it is not generally our first choice for achieving a controlled tinted floor.
