Osmo Polyx-Oil Tints can create some of the most attractive coloured finishes available for wooden flooring, combining transparent pigment with the natural oils and waxes found within the Polyx-Oil system.

They are straightforward products when used correctly, but coloured hardwax oil is far less forgiving of poor preparation than a standard clear finish.

The final colour does not come from the tin alone. Timber species, natural colour, density, age, porosity, sanding preparation and application technique can all change how the pigment is absorbed.

This means the same Tint can look noticeably different on two floors — and even individual boards within the same floor can naturally accept the colour differently.

This guide explains how to use Osmo Polyx-Oil Tints, including preparation, sanding, test areas, contamination, white-pad and floor-brush application, plank versus herringbone, drying, topcoats, 3040 White and optional professional techniques for increasing pigment uptake.

The standard WWFS Polyx-Oil Tints range includes:

These are transparent colours rather than opaque paints. The natural grain, figuring and variation within the timber remain visible through the finish.

The colour name is only a starting point Honey, Amber, White or Graphite will not look identical on every floor. The natural timber colour underneath forms part of the finished colour, which is why testing on the actual wood is essential.

Always Complete a Test Area First

This is one of the most important rules when working with pigmented oil.

Never rely solely on a colour chart, website photograph or sample made from a different piece of timber.

Osmo recommends a trial application because the condition and characteristics of the wood influence the finished appearance.

Pigment uptake can change according to:

  • Wood species.
  • Timber density.
  • Age of the floor.
  • Natural timber colour.
  • Moisture content.
  • Porosity and dryness.
  • Previous treatments or contamination.
  • Sanding preparation.
  • Application method.
  • The topcoat applied afterwards.
Test the complete system Prepare a representative section exactly as the main floor will be prepared. Apply the Tint using the intended brush, white-pad or machine method, allow it to dry fully and apply the exact proposed topcoat. ``` Only approve the colour once the complete finishing system has dried. ```

If the main floor will be machine-buffed, machine-buff the test area.

If you intend to water-pop the main floor, water-pop the sample.

If you intend to apply along straight planks with a Floor Brush, use the same brush technique on the sample.

Application technique becomes part of the colour With pigmented oil, changing the sanding preparation, application tool or amount of product can visibly alter the result. Once the customer or installer has approved a test area, reproduce that same process across the complete floor.

Keep the Freshly Sanded Floor Completely Clean

Once final sanding is complete, treat the bare timber as though the finishing process has already started.

Do not walk across the prepared floor in socks or bare feet, and avoid touching the timber unnecessarily with bare hands.

Natural skin oils, moisture and perspiration can contaminate absorbent timber and alter how pigment penetrates.

This can potentially leave:

  • Footprints.
  • Sock marks.
  • Handprints.
  • Knee marks.
  • Sweat droplets.
  • Uneven pigment absorption.

Floor finishing is physical work, and drops of perspiration can easily reach bare timber without being noticed.

A single sweat mark can become a colour mark Pigmented oil can reveal contamination that was almost invisible on bare timber. If sweat, water or skin contamination reaches the floor, deal with it before applying the Tint rather than assuming the pigment will hide it.

Wear clean footwear with clean shoe covers when moving across the final-sanded floor.

Take additional care when kneeling, mixing products or working in warm conditions.

Final sanding is the first stage of finishing From the moment the last sanding pass is complete, anything that touches the bare timber can potentially influence the finished colour.

How Should the Floor Be Sanded?

Osmo's standard Polyx-Oil Tints guidance specifies final sanding of wooden flooring to approximately P120–P150.

The complete floor should be sanded progressively and, most importantly, consistently.

Main areas, edges, corners and repaired sections need to finish with a comparable scratch pattern.

Uneven sanding can create uneven colour Coarser scratches can hold additional pigment while highly polished areas may absorb less. Edge sanding that differs from the centre of the floor can become particularly obvious after a colour is applied.

Once sanding is complete, vacuum the floor thoroughly using effective dust extraction and protect the surface from contamination.

Do Not Over-Sand the Timber

There is a natural temptation to sand a floor finer and finer because the bare timber feels smoother.

With a penetrating coloured finish, excessively polishing the wood can reduce absorption and change how strongly the pigment develops.

Stay within the preparation recommended for the finishing system and establish the desired colour through the complete test area rather than changing sanding halfway through the project.

Stir Pigmented Oil Thoroughly

Pigments naturally settle within the container during storage.

Stir Polyx-Oil Tints thoroughly before application and continue to stir periodically during use.

This is particularly important on a larger floor where the container may remain open for a considerable period.

Do not rely on a quick shake Work settled pigment properly back into the product. Inconsistent mixing can create colour differences between the beginning and end of the floor.

What Is the Best Way to Apply Osmo Tints?

Osmo supports application using its Flat Brush, Floor Brush, Microfibre Roller and Oil Finish Applicator Fleece.

For a lighter stained appearance, Osmo also allows the wet Tint to be wiped back with a cloth or white pad within approximately 20 minutes.

In professional flooring work, our preferred approach depends heavily on the flooring pattern.

Our preferred method where maximum control is required, particularly across herringbone, parquet and patterned floors.

The pad allows the pigment to be worked extremely thinly into the surface and makes it easier to control excess product across changing grain directions.

Osmo Floor Brush

Excellent on straight plank flooring because the Tint can be applied and laid off along the length of the boards.

This gives excellent control over the amount of finish and makes it easier to follow the timber grain.

Why We Often Prefer a Brush or White Pad

Pigmented finishes expose inconsistencies more readily than clear oils.

A floor brush allows the installer to control how much Tint is placed onto individual planks and to lay the finish off carefully with the grain.

White-pad application works the product into the timber while redistributing excess material across a wider area.

A microfibre roller is also an approved Osmo application tool, but for coloured flooring our preference is generally to use the method that gives the greatest control over pigment distribution for the particular floor being treated.

Applying Osmo Tint with a White Pad

White-pad application can be carried out manually on small areas or mechanically using a suitable rotary floor machine on larger floors.

Our normal professional process is to introduce a small, controlled quantity of Tint and use the pad to work it exceptionally thinly and evenly into the timber.

Avoid flooding the floor.

The pad should be redistributing and working the finish into the surface rather than simply pushing a large pool of product around the room.

Very little product is required Polyx-Oil Tints are high-coverage finishes. If the floor looks heavily wet or the pad is leaving thick pigment trails behind it, too much material is probably being used.

Applying Osmo Tint with a Floor Brush

The Osmo Floor Brush is particularly effective on straight plank flooring.

Apply an exceptionally thin coat along the direction of the boards, carefully spreading and laying off the finish with the timber grain.

Work methodically and keep the amount of product consistent from board to board.

Do not leave pools of pigment within bevels, joints or textured areas.

A Floor Brush is particularly controllable because the product can be applied and laid off consistently along the board direction.

Herringbone & Parquet

White-pad or machine application is generally our preferred method because the blocks continually change direction.

Trying to brush a large patterned area in one direction can create obvious overlaps and directional marks.

How Thin Should Osmo Tint Be Applied?

Exceptionally thinly.

Osmo specifies approximate coverage of up to 30m² per litre for one coat on a smooth, correctly prepared surface.

That high coverage is a useful indication of just how little material the timber actually requires.

More oil does not create a better finish Heavy application slows drying, increases the risk of patchiness and can leave excess pigment or oil sitting on the surface instead of forming the intended thin finish.

How Much Osmo Polyx-Oil Tint Do I Need?

Actual coverage varies according to timber porosity, sanding, surface texture and application technique.

How Long Does Osmo Polyx-Oil Tint Take to Dry?

Allow approximately 24 hours under normal conditions with good ventilation.

Osmo bases this figure on approximately 23°C and 50% relative humidity.

Lower temperatures, higher humidity, poor airflow or excessive product can extend drying considerably.

Do not rush the next coat If the Tint has not dried properly, applying the next coat can disturb or move the colour underneath. This can create lighter areas, pull pigment from the timber or produce an uneven, patchy appearance.

If there is any doubt, give the coloured coat more time.

Airflow Is Critical

Osmo oils cure by oxidation and need access to air.

Provide good ventilation throughout drying without introducing dirt, dust or other contamination onto the freshly treated surface.

Avoid covering the floor while it is drying and curing.

Full cure takes approximately 2–3 weeks.

How Many Coloured Coats Should Be Applied to a Floor?

For normal wooden flooring, Osmo specifies a maximum of one coloured Polyx-Oil Tint coat followed by the appropriate protective topcoat.

Furniture and other appropriate interior timber can have different coating options, including a second coloured coat where Osmo permits it, but flooring should follow the specific floor system.

Important Exception: Polyx-Oil Tints 3040 White

White requires special consideration.

A normal clear oil enriches timber and produces a permanent wet-look effect. On pale wood this often means the natural yellow, gold or warm brown colour becomes more noticeable.

If a clear Polyx-Oil is placed over 3040 White, that warming effect can partially counteract the pale white appearance you were trying to create.

Osmo therefore recommends its white-on-white rule for Polyx-Oil Tints 3040 White.

Do not automatically put a clear topcoat over 3040 White Clear oil can enrich and warm the underlying timber. If maintaining the pale white effect is important, follow Osmo's white-on-white system and complete the entire system on a representative test area first.

What About Osmo Polyx-Oil Raw 3044?

Osmo Polyx-Oil Raw 3044 is a different product.

Raw contains a much smaller amount of white pigment intended primarily to neutralise the normal wet-look darkening caused by clear oil.

Its purpose is to keep pale timber looking closer to freshly sanded wood rather than create an obvious white-tinted floor.

Produces a visible but transparent white tint.

3044 Raw

Uses a smaller amount of white pigment to counteract oil darkening and keep pale wood closer to its untreated appearance.

Raw 3044 is therefore not simply the standard topcoat for 3040 White. Choose the complete system according to the appearance required and test it before treating the main floor.

What If I Want a Much Stronger Colour?

Polyx-Oil Tints are designed to remain transparent and retain the timber grain.

If a much more intensive colour is required, applying increasingly heavy coats of Tint is not the correct solution.

Osmo recommends its more highly pigmented Wood Wax Finish or Oil Stain systems for stronger colour effects.

Do not chase colour intensity by over-applying Polyx-Oil Tints Establish the required depth of colour during sampling. If the Tint cannot achieve it within the approved flooring system, choose a more highly pigmented colouring product instead.

Optional Professional Technique: Water-Popping

Water-popping can be used professionally to increase pigment uptake and produce a stronger colour effect.

This is not part of the standard Osmo Polyx-Oil Tints Technical Data Sheet, so we treat it as an optional professional technique rather than a manufacturer-required application step.

It should only be used after a complete representative test confirms the result.

Finish the complete floor consistently and vacuum all sanding dust.

Mist Clean Water Evenly

Apply a controlled, even mist using a clean pump sprayer. Avoid puddles and heavy wet areas.

One person can spray while a second immediately follows with a clean damp microfibre applicator to distribute the moisture evenly.

Allow the Timber to Dry Completely

Do not apply Polyx-Oil Tint while residual moisture remains within the timber.

Apply the Tested Tint System

Reproduce exactly the same application method and product quantity used on the approved water-popped sample.

Water causes the timber fibres to raise slightly and can increase pigment absorption.

This can create a richer dark Tint or a stronger pale/white effect depending on the selected colour.

Water-pop the complete area consistently Do not water-pop isolated sections of a floor. A water-popped area may absorb noticeably more pigment than normally sanded timber and create an obvious colour difference.

What If Water-Popping Leaves the Timber Feeling Rough?

A slight grain raise is part of what makes the technique increase pigment absorption.

Avoid automatically sanding the floor smooth again before applying the Tint, because doing so can reverse the effect you created.

Equally, avoid aggressive sanding of a dried coloured coat because this can remove pigment and create pale patches.

Professional judgement is important Osmo's standard Polyx-Oil Tints system does not require intermediate sanding. If a tested specialist system genuinely requires light de-nibbing, keep it extremely gentle and prove the exact method on the test area before touching the main floor.

Can I Water-Pop Only to Make White Look Whiter?

Water-popping can increase the absorption of white pigment, so it can make the white effect more pronounced.

But it also changes the character and texture of the surface.

Always compare water-popped and normally prepared samples side by side before deciding which appearance is preferable.

Common Osmo Tint Problems

Patchy Colour

Common causes include inconsistent sanding, uneven pigment distribution, surface contamination, varying timber absorption or allowing sections to dry before they are blended.

Dark or Heavy Areas

Usually caused by excess product being left on the timber or repeated overlap onto an area already beginning to dry.

Pale Areas after the Next Coat

The coloured coat may not have been fully dry and the subsequent application may have disturbed or pulled pigment from the surface.

Edges Look Different from the Centre

Check for differences in sanding, application quantity and the amount of Tint worked or wiped from the floor.

White Finish Looks Warmer after Topcoating

A clear oil can enrich the natural timber colour. For 3040 White, use Osmo's white-on-white system where maintaining the pale white appearance is required.

Visible Brush Lines on Herringbone

Patterned floors continually change grain direction. A white-pad or rotary-machine application method is usually easier to control than attempting to brush the entire pattern in one direction.

Oil Is Still Sticky after 24 Hours

Common causes include excessive application, poor ventilation, low temperature or high humidity.

Cleaning & Maintaining an Osmo-Tinted Floor

Once the complete Polyx-Oil system has dried and cured, maintain the floor as an Osmo hardwax-oiled surface.

Vacuum or dry-clean regularly to remove abrasive grit.

Damp cleaning should be carried out with an appropriate Osmo floor-care product and a well-wrung mop rather than saturating the timber.
