The correct maintenance product is chosen by the floor's protective finish, not simply by whether the flooring is engineered, solid or parquet. A lacquered floor, a traditionally oiled floor, an Osmo hardwax-oiled floor and a factory UV or LED-oiled floor can look surprisingly similar, but they may need different cleaners and maintenance treatments. Identify the finish first, then choose the lightest process that solves the actual problem.
Do not experiment across the whole floor
Oil, polish and refresher deliberately leave material on the surface. Applying the wrong system can alter the colour or sheen, remain tacky, reduce adhesion or complicate later recoating. Find the flooring or finish manufacturer wherever possible, make a small compatibility test in a hidden area, and read the current instructions for both the floor and the maintenance product.

I have moved into a house and do not know the floor finish
This is a common problem. The floor may have been cleaned with several household products, covered with polish, locally repaired or partly worn through before you see it. Start by identifying the history rather than immediately applying the strongest cleaner.
Look for evidence
Check purchase documents, care packs, leftover tins, spare boards, garage or cupboard shelves and information from the seller, landlord, installer or flooring manufacturer. A product name, batch label or photograph of the original packaging is more reliable than appearance alone.
Dry-clean a hidden area
Vacuum with a suitable hard-floor head or use a clean dusting pad. Remove loose grit before inspecting the grain, sheen and wear boundaries. Do not use abrasive pads or household degreasers.
Compare protected and exposed areas
Look beneath a movable rug or piece of furniture, beside skirting and across a doorway. This can show the original sheen and colour, but remember that daylight and wear can also create differences.
Inspect the wear pattern
An oiled surface often becomes dry, pale, dull or faded through a traffic lane, sometimes with a gradual change rather than a distinct edge. A worn lacquer more often shows loss or scratching within a surface film, and severe failure may show a defined edge, flaking or peeling. These are clues, not proof.
Use water only as a condition check
On a clean hidden spot, a tiny water bead can indicate whether protection is depleted. Wipe it away promptly. Fast darkening or absorption means the surface needs attention, but it does not by itself prove whether the original finish was oil or lacquer. Never leave water sitting as a long test.
Test the likely maintenance system
Only after narrowing down the finish, test the exact proposed cleaner or maintenance product on a small isolated area. Follow the compatibility method below. Do not test oil and polish across adjoining visible patches and then choose whichever initially looks shinier.
Low sheen does not automatically mean oil
Modern ultra-matt and raw-effect lacquers can look and feel very similar to oiled timber. Factory UV or LED-cured finishes can also be extremely matt. Where the finish remains uncertain, restrict the work to careful dry cleaning and seek product or professional identification before applying oil, polish, refresher, wax or an intensive cleaner.

UV and LED curing are manufacturing methods. They can produce finishes that look like natural oil, a hardwax oil or an ultra-matt lacquer. They also explain why a new floor can be immediately usable even though a comparable site-applied coating might require hours or days to dry and cure.
Factory LED oil is not the same as applying an LED oil on site
A factory LED-oiled board has already passed through a controlled coating and curing process. It does not need an LED lamp during routine cleaning, and an unfamiliar liquid LED coating should not be used as a maintenance oil. The original floor manufacturer's care schedule takes priority.
The floor looks terrible: clean, maintain or renovate?
A dirty floor, a dry oiled floor, a polished floor with product build-up and a floor worn through to bare timber can all look grey or lifeless. Work through the stages in order.
Loose dirt and surface marks
Start with vacuuming or dusting, then controlled damp cleaning using the routine cleaner approved for the finish. Allow it to dry before judging the colour.
Stubborn contamination
If routine cleaner is insufficient, use the compatible intensive or deep-clean process. Deep cleaning may remove protective maintenance material, so reassess the surface afterwards.
Finish intact but visually tired
A compatible lacquer may accept Refresher or Polish. An identified oiled floor may accept its matching maintenance oil, wax-care treatment or approved refresher.
Protection has failed
Bare grey timber, widespread peeling lacquer, deep scratches, black water staining, loose boards or extensive bond failure need repair or professional renovation rather than another cleaning product.
Clean only a manageable trial area first when the history is unknown. If the colour remains grey after the correct cleaner, inspect whether the wood itself is exposed or stained. Adding polish or oil over trapped dirt does not restore the timber, it seals the problem into a new layer.
Lacquered and varnished wood floors
Lacquer protects the timber with a surface film. Routine cleaning should remove grit and marks without leaving residue or flooding the joints. Maintenance polish and refresher are separate products; neither is ordinary cleaner and neither replaces failed lacquer.

Deep cleaning a lacquered floor
Bona Deep Clean Solution is a professional concentrated cleaner for heavier contamination. Bona's current guidance specifies different dilution rates for lacquered and oiled floors, so it must not be treated as a ready-to-use household spray. On lacquered wood, Bona states a 10% solution, one litre of product to nine litres of water, used with the approved machine or controlled cleaning process.
Machine deep cleaning is normally completed with the Bona PowerScrubber and the correct brushes, settings and extraction method. This is a professional process. Too much liquid, an unsuitable aggressive pad or repeated scrubbing over failed lacquer can damage the floor or drive dirty solution into joints.

Polish is not lacquer
Polish is a sacrificial maintenance layer. It does not rebuild missing lacquer, repair deep scratches or seal exposed timber. If the coating is peeling, worn through or contaminated with unknown waxes, professional cleaning, abrasion, recoating or full sanding may be required.
Oiled and hardwax-oiled wood floors
Oiled floors can often be replenished before wear reaches bare timber, but the original system matters. A clear maintenance oil can deepen or warm pale oak, while a white-pigmented, coloured or anti-slip floor may require a matching product. Clean first, allow the floor to dry completely, then apply the maintenance treatment exceptionally thinly.

Use a suitable vacuum or the Osmo Dust Mop Head. Grit dragged beneath a damp mop behaves like fine abrasive.
Damp clean with Wash & Care
Dilute Osmo Wash & Care as instructed. Osmo's current mop guidance uses approximately 15ml in two litres of water. Wring the Micro-Mop Plush well and damp-mop rather than wet-mop.
Use Liquid Wax Cleaner only when appropriate
The Osmo Floor Maintenance Kit includes Liquid Wax Cleaner for occasional cleaning and refreshing. It is applied extremely thinly, not added as normal mop detergent. The clear and white versions affect appearance differently.
Intensive clean when routine care is no longer enough
Use Osmo Intensive Cleaner 8019 only as an intensive process. Dilute 1:10 to 1:20, work in small controllable areas, rinse carefully without saturating the boards, then allow the floor to dry fully.
Replenish worn protection
Once the floor is clean and fully dry, apply the correct Osmo Maintenance Oil very thinly, remove excess and ventilate while drying. If wear is too advanced, the floor may need the matching Polyx-Oil rather than another maintenance coat.

Osmo states coverage of approximately 40 to 60m² per litre for one coat, with a drying time of around three to four hours in suitable conditions. Those figures demonstrate how thinly Maintenance Oil should be applied. Excess material can remain tacky, attract dirt and produce uneven sheen.
Bona and other conventionally oiled floors
For compatible conventionally oiled floors, the Bona Premium Spray Mop for Oiled Floors is the simplest complete routine-cleaning route. The dedicated Bona Cleaner Spray for Oiled Floors, 2.5L refill and 850ml mop cartridge provide matching formats.
Bona Wood Floor Cleaner may be compatible with many sealed wood floors, but Bona recommends its dedicated oiled-floor cleaner for regular maintenance of oiled flooring. If the floor is Osmo Polyx-Oil or another known hardwax-oil, stay within that manufacturer's care system rather than switching between oil-maintenance brands without a compatibility check.
Cleaning an oiled floor does not automatically mean it needs more oil
Judge the clean, dry surface. Apply maintenance oil when protection has reduced or traffic areas look dry and worn, not simply because a date has arrived. Too many maintenance coats can create build-up and an uneven appearance.
Factory UV-oiled and LED-oiled floors
Factory-cured oil finishes are common on modern engineered flooring. They can be durable, immediately usable and more film-like than a traditional site-applied oil. A customer may therefore describe the same floor as lacquered, oiled or “sealed”. The product record is the deciding evidence.
How to maintain them safely
- Identify the flooring brand, collection, colour and finish from documents or a spare board.
- Use the manufacturer's approved routine cleaner. Do not assume “oiled” means Osmo Wash & Care.
- Confirm whether the factory requires an initial maintenance coat after fitting. Some oiled floors do, while other LED-oiled systems are supplied ready for use.
- When the floor becomes dry or worn, use the approved clear or pigmented maintenance product. Test through the complete drying period because colour and sheen can change.
- Do not apply a site LED-curing coating unless a trained professional is deliberately renovating the floor with the complete lamp-cured system.
STAKI, one of the factory LED-oiled flooring ranges sold by WWFS, describes LED oil as a replacement for conventional UV curing and publishes its own care recommendations. Its information refers to specialist floor cleaner and wax-care products, and some finish families have additional oil instructions. This is why the safest selector result for a STAKI or other identified factory-oiled floor is the manufacturer's maintenance schedule, not a generic clear oil.
What about UV-cured lacquer?
A UV-cured lacquer is still a lacquer. Clean it through the lacquered-floor route and use polish, refresher or professional recoating only when those products are compatible with the factory coating. Do not use the word “UV” as a reason to apply maintenance oil.
Deep cleaning, pads and professional machines
Deep cleaning uses stronger chemistry, more agitation or both. It should be selected as a complete process: cleaner, dilution, applicator, dwell time, agitation, liquid recovery, rinsing where required, drying and the maintenance treatment that follows.

The Bona FlexiSand is a professional multipurpose floor machine, but it is not automatically interchangeable with the PowerScrubber. The drive plate, pad, weight, speed, liquid-control method and maintenance specification must all match the job. Never select a coloured pad by colour alone across different manufacturers.
Do not machine-clean loose, open or badly worn flooring
Stop if boards are lifting, joints are open, lacquer is flaking, the floor moves under load or liquid could reach a damaged subfloor. A machine can spread contamination, force moisture into joints or enlarge an existing failure. Repair and professional assessment come first.
How to make a compatibility test
A test should answer four questions: does the product bond, does it dry, does it alter the colour and does it create the right sheen? It is not a licence to apply several incompatible products across the room.
- Choose a small, clean, inconspicuous area that is still representative of the main floor. Avoid a patch already contaminated by silicone, furniture polish or a leaking plant pot.
- Photograph the area in daylight and record the suspected finish and exact test product.
- Clean and prepare the test patch exactly as the maintenance-product instructions require. Allow it to dry fully.
- Apply the smallest practical amount at the specified spread rate with a clean dedicated applicator. Maintenance oil must be exceptionally thin and surplus must be removed.
- Allow at least the manufacturer's stated drying time. Where the finish history is uncertain, leave the isolated patch for 24 hours before judging it, or longer if the selected product specifies a longer cure.
- Check in daylight for colour change, whitening, gloss difference, edge marks, tackiness and uneven absorption. Rub firmly with a clean white cloth and check for transfer.
- On the test patch only, make a very light fingernail check after full drying. Stop if the new layer rolls, lifts, remains soft or marks far more easily than the surrounding surface. Do not gouge the timber or use a knife as a household “scratch test”.
- If the result is sound, repeat the planned preparation across the floor. If it fails, do not coat over it or try to cancel it out with the opposite product; seek advice on removing the test material safely.
Test oil and lacquer maintenance products as separate hypotheses
If the floor is thought to be oiled, test only the manufacturer-approved oil-care route. If it is thought to be lacquered, test only the compatible lacquer polish or refresher route. Applying maintenance oil in one corner and polish beside it can leave two different contaminants without proving what the original finish was.
Everyday care that extends the finish
- Vacuum or dust-mop regularly so grit is removed before damp cleaning.
- Use effective entrance matting and remove wet or muddy footwear.
- Fit clean felt furniture pads and inspect them for trapped grit.
- Lift furniture rather than dragging it. Use suitable cups or protection beneath concentrated loads and castors.
- Wipe up spills promptly, especially around sinks, dishwashers, external doors, pet bowls and plant pots.
- Keep pet claws appropriately trimmed and dry wet paws at the entrance.
- Use a damp, well-wrung mop, never a dripping mop or pooled cleaning solution.
- Do not use a steam cleaner on real wood flooring.
- Keep the room within the flooring manufacturer's temperature and relative-humidity range.
- Do not cover a newly maintained floor with rugs until the selected product has dried and cured as instructed.
Products to avoid unless the floor manufacturer specifically approves them
Avoid bleach, ammonia, strong alkaline degreasers, washing-up liquid, generic multipurpose floor detergent, abrasive powder, scouring pads, silicone furniture polish, unapproved wax, excess water and steam. A label that says “hard floors” does not automatically mean real wood or the existing finish.

Choosing by shine
Ultra-matt lacquer is mistaken for oil, or a polished oiled floor is mistaken for varnish. Find the product record and inspect wear before coating.
Oiling over dirt
Maintenance oil is used to darken a dirty traffic lane. The contamination becomes locked into an uneven new layer.
Polishing bare timber
Lacquer has worn through, but polish is expected to rebuild the missing coating. Exposed wood needs repair or renovation.
Over-applying oil
A heavy coat is assumed to give more protection. Instead it dries slowly, remains tacky and attracts dirt.

Can I tell oil from lacquer by how shiny it is?
No. Oil is often matt and lacquer can be glossy, but modern ultra-matt lacquer and factory UV or LED-cured finishes overlap visually. Use product records, wear patterns and a controlled compatibility assessment.
My oiled floor has a faded traffic line. Does it need sanding?
Not necessarily. First clean it with the approved system and allow it to dry. If the timber is sound and the finish is simply dry or depleted, the matching maintenance oil may restore protection. Grey bare timber, deep staining or severe colour loss can require more extensive renovation.
My varnish looks like a layer has disappeared. Will polish repair it?
Polish can improve fine micro-scratches and sheen on compatible intact lacquer. It cannot replace lacquer that has worn through to timber, is peeling or has lost adhesion. Those areas need professional repair or recoating.
Can I test Maintenance Oil in a corner?

Respond to the floor's condition, traffic and manufacturer schedule rather than automatically coating it every year. Busy entrances and kitchens wear faster than bedrooms. Clean first and assess the fully dry surface before adding another layer.
Can I use a steam mop on engineered or solid wood flooring?
WWFS does not recommend it. Steam combines heat and moisture and can introduce water into worn coating, bevels and joints. Use controlled damp cleaning with the correct floor cleaner.
