Osmo Polyx-Oil Original is the original high-solid hardwax oil for protecting wooden floors, furniture, staircases and other interior timber surfaces.
Its carefully balanced combination of natural oils and hard waxes penetrates into the timber while creating an exceptionally durable, water-repellent, dirt-resistant and abrasion-resistant surface. Unlike a conventional surface coating, the microporous finish allows the timber to breathe and will not crack, flake, blister or peel.
Available in 3032 Clear Satin and 3062 Clear Matt, Osmo Polyx-Oil Original enhances the grain and natural character of the wood while providing long-lasting protection that is straightforward to clean, maintain and locally renovate.
Wiltshire Wood Recommendation:
Polyx-Oil Original is our preferred general-purpose Osmo finish for
wooden floors, furniture, staircases and absorbent interior joinery. It
provides excellent durability without creating the heavy plastic-looking
surface associated with some conventional varnishes.
Apply two exceptionally thin coats and provide plenty of ventilation throughout drying. Applying more oil than the timber requires will not improve the protection and may cause slow drying, tackiness or uneven sheen.
High-Solid Protection That Lasts
Osmo Polyx-Oil Original is a high-solid wood finish. Its formulation contains a substantial concentration of natural oils and hard waxes that remain within and at the surface of the timber as the finish dries and cures.
This helps create a hardwearing protective surface with excellent resistance to water, dirt, abrasion and everyday liquid spillages. It is a particularly good choice where long-term durability is required but the natural appearance and texture of the timber still need to remain visible.
Why Product Quality Matters: Not all products sold as hardwax oils contain the same proportion or quality of protective oils and waxes. Lower-solid products may rely more heavily on solvents that evaporate during drying. Osmo Polyx-Oil Original is specifically promoted as a high-solid system designed to leave a durable combination of oils and hard waxes protecting the timber.

Which Osmo Oil Is Right for Me?
| Osmo Finish | Best For | Key Difference |
|---|---|---|
| Polyx-Oil Original | Wooden floors, furniture, staircases and general interior timber. | The original high-solid clear hardwax oil, combining exceptional durability with a natural and repairable finish. |
| Osmo Polyx-Oil Rapid | Floors and furniture where the finishing programme needs to be completed more quickly. | Approximately 4–5 hours’ drying can allow two thin coats to be applied in one working day under suitable conditions. |
| Osmo Polyx-Oil Tints | Adding transparent colour while retaining visible timber grain. | On flooring, generally use one thin tinted coat followed by a clear Polyx-Oil topcoat for protection. |
| Osmo Polyx-Oil Original Raw | Light-coloured woods where a pale, almost untreated appearance is required. | Contains a small amount of white pigment to help counteract the usual warming and darkening caused by clear oil. |
| Osmo Door-Oil | Interior wooden doors, including suitable solid and veneered door constructions. | A purpose-designed door finish available in Clear Satin and Raw Matt appearances. |
| Osmo TopOil | Kitchen worktops, tables, desks, shelving and wooden furniture. | A highly water-repellent, food-safe finish designed particularly for work surfaces and furniture. |
Original or Rapid?
Both products provide durable Osmo hardwax-oil protection when correctly
applied. Choose Polyx-Oil Original for the traditional Osmo system, or
choose
Polyx-Oil Rapid
where reducing the time between coats is particularly important.
Choose Your Finish
| Finish | Appearance | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| 3032 Clear Satin | A subtle satin sheen that enriches the timber and gently reflects light. | Traditional and contemporary interiors where a warm, softly polished oiled appearance is wanted. |
| 3062 Clear Matt | A lower-sheen finish that diffuses light while still enriching the natural timber colour. | Floors, furniture and joinery where a more natural-looking matt surface is preferred. |
Clear Oil Changes the Timber Colour: Both variants are clear, but clear hardwax oil creates a permanent wet-look effect that enriches and usually darkens the natural colour of timber. Use a sample sachet and test the selected finish on the actual wood before treating the complete area.
Suitable Surfaces
- Solid wood flooring

Staircases and Joinery:
Polyx-Oil Original is not limited to flooring. It is also a very good
finish for solid timber staircases, treads, risers, handrails, spindles,
skirting boards and other interior woodwork.
Use an appropriately sized brush for detailed components and always spread the oil exceptionally thinly to avoid runs or heavy deposits around mouldings and corners.
Surfaces Requiring Extra Care
| Surface | Consideration | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| Dark or extractive-rich hardwoods | Species such as Wenge, Merbau and Jatoba may contain oils or extractives that interfere with normal absorption and drying. | Complete a trial application. Osmo Wood Wax Finish Clear Extra Thin may be the more suitable system. |
| Cork | Cork is highly absorbent and can take in too much finish if the application is not carefully controlled. | Apply especially thinly and allow additional drying time. |
| Veneered doors and panels | Suitability can depend on the veneer, adhesive and manufacturer’s finishing requirements. | Check the door or panel manufacturer’s instructions. Osmo Door-Oil is the more purpose-specific choice for suitable doors. |
| Enclosed cabinets and drawers | Restricted airflow can significantly delay drying and leave a persistent odour. | Apply no more than one exceptionally thin cloth coat and provide good ventilation. |
| Previously lacquered or painted timber | Polyx-Oil cannot penetrate properly through a film-forming coating. | Completely remove paint, varnish and lacquer before applying the oil. |
Recommended Application Tools
| Application Tool | Best For | How It Is Used |
|---|---|---|
| Osmo Floor Brush | Applying Polyx-Oil across wooden floors while working comfortably from a standing position. | Work with the grain and stretch the oil thoroughly into an exceptionally thin and even film. |
| Osmo Floor Roller Set | Fast and controlled application over larger open floor areas. | Load the microfibre roller lightly and spread the oil evenly along the grain without leaving heavy roller edges. |
| Wood Coating Brushes | Furniture, staircases, spindles, skirting boards, edges, corners and detailed joinery. | Select an appropriate brush width and blend carefully into adjacent areas while maintaining a wet edge. |
| Extension Poles and Handles | Applying floor finishes from a standing position with suitable brushes and roller frames. | Attach to the compatible applicator and work methodically across the floor in manageable sections. |
Osmo also approves application using its Flat Brush, Microfibre Roller and Oil Finish Applicator Fleece. The correct tool will depend on the size, shape and accessibility of the timber being treated.
Recommended Accessories
| Accessory | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Osmo Floor Brush | Professional brush application over larger wooden floor areas. |
| Osmo Floor Roller Set | Complete tray and microfibre roller system for thin, even floor application. |
| Brushes | Smaller brushes for edges and detailed joinery, plus wider brushes for general coating work. |
| Application and Buffing Pads | Hand application, rubbing in and buffing where the chosen application method requires it. |
| Osmo Brush Cleaner & Thinner | Cleaning suitable brushes, rollers and tools immediately after use. |
Available Sizes
| Size | Approximate Coverage Per Coat | Recommended Use |
|---|---|---|
| 5ml Sample Sachet | Small test area | Checking the colour enrichment and sheen on the actual timber before purchasing a larger size. |
| 0.75L | Up to approximately 18m² | Smaller floors, staircases, furniture, joinery and localised projects. |
| 2.5L | Up to approximately 60m² | Medium to large floors and professional flooring projects. |
Coverage is based on approximately 24m² per litre for one coat. Actual coverage will vary according to timber species, surface porosity, sanding preparation, application tool and the quantity applied.
Remember to Calculate Two Coats: The stated coverage is for one coat. A new, bare timber surface normally requires two thin coats, so a 2.5L tin covering up to approximately 60m² per coat will normally complete approximately 30m² as a full two-coat system.

Coverage, drying and curing times are approximate. Temperature, humidity, airflow, timber species, preparation and application thickness will all affect the result. Low temperatures, limited ventilation and excessive application will significantly delay drying.
Surface Preparation
- Ensure the timber is clean, dry, frost-free and free from grease, wax, dirt and contamination.
- The moisture content of the timber must not exceed approximately 18%.
- Completely remove old paint, varnish, lacquer and other film-forming finishes.
- Clean compatible old microporous oil finishes thoroughly before assessing whether they are suitable for recoating.
- Repair or replace loose, damaged or unstable timber before sanding.
- Countersink protruding nails, pins and other fixings.
- Fill suitable small cracks, holes and imperfections before completing the final sanding sequence.
- Sand the entire surface evenly back to clean, absorbent timber.
- For flooring, complete a consistent professional sanding sequence and generally finish around P120–P150, subject to timber species and the intended application method.
- For furniture and fine joinery, a finer final sanding sequence may be appropriate.
- Vacuum thoroughly, including floor joints, edges, mouldings and corners.
- Stir the oil thoroughly with a flat stirring stick before and during application.
- Complete a trial application on the actual timber before treating the full surface.
Consistent Sanding Is Essential: Areas finished using different abrasive grits may absorb different amounts of oil, producing visible variations in colour and sheen. Complete the same final sanding process consistently across the full surface.
Floor Application
- Bring the product to normal room temperature and stir thoroughly before use. Do not thin.
- Ensure the floor is completely clean, dry and free from sanding dust.
- Cut in around skirting boards, corners, door frames and thresholds using a suitable brush from our brush range .
- Apply the first coat exceptionally thinly using an Osmo Floor Brush or Osmo Floor Roller Set .
- Work methodically along the timber grain and spread the oil thoroughly.
- Avoid leaving puddles, heavy deposits, thick brush marks or visible roller edges.
- Work in manageable sections and maintain a wet edge across the floor.
- Check the surface from several angles while the oil is wet and redistribute any visible heavy areas immediately.
- Allow the first coat to dry for approximately 8–10 hours under good ventilation.
- Once the first coat is properly dry, apply a second coat just as thinly and evenly.
- Continue ventilating throughout drying and curing.
- Allow the second coat to dry before permitting light foot traffic.
- Keep traffic as light as reasonably possible and avoid covering the floor during the full curing period.
Floor Application Tip:
The most common mistake with Polyx-Oil is applying too much. The finish
should be stretched across the timber into an exceptionally thin,
consistent layer. More oil does not create better protection and can
result in tackiness, delayed drying and patchy sheen.
Applying to Stairs, Furniture and Joinery
- Prepare and sand the timber evenly, then remove all dust.
- Select a suitable brush or applicator for the size and shape of the component.
- Apply the oil thinly with the grain, taking extra care around mouldings, corners, joints and end grain.
- Check vertical surfaces for runs and heavy deposits before the finish begins to dry.
- Spread out any excess oil immediately.
- Allow approximately 8–10 hours’ drying under good ventilation.
- Apply the second coat just as thinly.
- Avoid closing newly finished drawers, cabinets or enclosed components until the finish is properly dry and ventilated.
Drying and Curing
| Stage | Approximate Time | Guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Between coats | Approximately 8–10 hours | The first coat must be dry before applying the second. Maintain good ventilation throughout. |
| Light use | Once the final coat has dried | Light foot traffic is possible, but avoid unnecessary wear, spillages and moisture. |
| Full cure | Approximately 10–14 days | Keep traffic light where possible and avoid rugs, mats, protective coverings and wet cleaning during curing. |
Do Not Cover While Curing: Osmo oils cure through oxidation and require airflow. Rugs, mats, protective sheeting and other coverings can restrict ventilation and may cause delayed curing or discolouration.
Cleaning and Maintenance
One of the main benefits of Polyx-Oil Original is that the surface can be cleaned, refreshed and locally renovated without necessarily sanding the entire floor.
| Maintenance Stage | Recommended Product | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Regular dry cleaning | Vacuum cleaner, soft broom or Osmo Dust Mop | Removes loose grit, dust and debris that could scratch or dull the surface. |
| Routine damp cleaning | Osmo Wash & Care | A concentrated cleaner formulated for routine cleaning of oiled and waxed wooden surfaces. |
| Complete maintenance kit | Osmo Floor Maintenance Kit | Provides suitable cleaning and care products for maintaining an Osmo-treated floor. |
| Periodic refreshing | Osmo Maintenance Oil | Refreshes dull or lightly worn areas and helps restore protection without a complete resand. |
| Intensive cleaning | Osmo Intensive Cleaner | Removes heavier dirt and contamination before appropriate maintenance or renovation. |
Vacuum or sweep before damp cleaning. Use a well-wrung mop and avoid flooding or saturating the timber. Wipe up liquid spillages promptly and never allow standing water to remain on the floor.
Renovating a Previously Oiled Surface
- Vacuum thoroughly to remove loose dirt, grit and debris.
- Clean the surface using an appropriate Osmo cleaning product.
- Allow the timber to dry completely before applying any maintenance or renovation oil.
- Inspect the surface for polish residues, contamination, deep scratches or damage requiring local sanding.
- Lightly abrade or repair damaged areas where necessary and remove all sanding dust.
- Apply one exceptionally thin coat of the matching Polyx-Oil finish.
- Feather local repairs carefully into the surrounding surface.
- Provide good ventilation and allow the new coat to dry fully before use.
Local Repair Benefit:
Unlike many film-forming floor coatings, an Osmo-treated surface can
often be repaired locally. Damaged or worn sections can be cleaned,
prepared and recoated without automatically sanding the entire floor.
Always test the repair method first, particularly where the timber has
been stained or tinted.
Important Application Notes
- Apply two exceptionally thin coats to new bare timber.
- A correctly prepared previously oiled surface will normally require only one thin renovation coat.
- Do not thin the product.
- Stir thoroughly before and during application.
- Applying too generously can cause slow drying, tackiness and uneven sheen.
- Poor ventilation will significantly extend the drying and curing time.
- Clear oil enriches and usually darkens the natural colour of wood.
- Test the product on the actual timber before completing the full area.
- Different timber species and sanding grits can produce significantly different results.
- Dark and extractive-rich hardwoods may require Osmo Wood Wax Finish Clear Extra Thin.
- Apply especially thinly to cork and allow additional drying time.
- Apply no more than one exceptionally thin cloth coat to cabinet interiors and drawers.
- Check veneered door and panel manufacturer instructions before applying any oil.
- Avoid standard household detergents, steam cleaners and excessive water on an oiled wooden floor.
Tool Cleaning
Clean suitable brushes, rollers and application equipment immediately after use with Osmo Brush Cleaner & Thinner .
Where the same applicator will be reused for the following coat, it may be wrapped or sealed in an airtight bag for a limited period to reduce drying in the fibres. Always inspect the applicator before reuse and replace it if the finish has begun to cure.
Oil-Soaked Cloth Safety: Cloths, pads and absorbent materials contaminated with drying oils can generate heat while curing. Lay them flat outdoors to dry safely or store them in an appropriate sealed metal container before disposal in accordance with the product safety information.
