Osmo Polyx-Oil Original is one of the best-known hardwax oil finishes for interior wooden floors. It combines natural oils and waxes to protect the timber while retaining the natural feel and character that makes an oiled wooden floor so appealing.

Unlike a conventional film-forming varnish, Polyx-Oil penetrates into the timber while creating a durable, microporous surface. When correctly applied, the finish is water and dirt resistant, breathable, easy to maintain and capable of being locally refreshed without routinely sanding the entire floor back to bare timber.

What Is Osmo Polyx-Oil Original?

Osmo Polyx-Oil Original is a clear hardwax oil for interior timber. Its formulation combines plant oils and hard waxes to penetrate and protect the wood while leaving a hardwearing, water-repellent surface.

The finish remains microporous, allowing the wood to breathe rather than enclosing it beneath a thick brittle film.

Clear Polyx-Oil enhances the natural colour and grain of timber. On pale bare wood, this normally creates a warmer and richer appearance compared with the freshly sanded surface.

Which Polyx-Oil Original Finishes Does WWFS Stock?

3032 Clear Satin

Produces a subtle satin sheen that reflects more light and gives the timber a slightly richer, more polished appearance.

Choose Satin where you want the natural grain enhanced with a gentle visible sheen.

3062 Clear Matt

Provides the same clear colour enrichment with a lower-reflection matt surface.

Choose Matt where you want a more understated appearance while still accepting the natural warming produced by a clear oil.

Both finishes provide the same type of hardwax-oil protection. The main difference is the final sheen.

Clear Matt does not mean raw or colourless Osmo Polyx-Oil Original 3062 Matt still enriches the natural colour of timber. If the aim is to keep pale oak looking closer to freshly sanded timber, consider Osmo Polyx-Oil Effect Raw 3044.

What Surfaces Can Polyx-Oil Original Be Used On?

Polyx-Oil Original is designed primarily for interior wooden floors and other suitable interior timber surfaces.

Typical uses include:

  • Solid wood flooring.
  • Engineered wood flooring with a suitable real-timber surface.
  • Plank flooring.
  • Parquet and herringbone flooring.
  • OSB flooring.
  • Cork flooring.

What About Wooden Kitchen Worktops?

Although Polyx-Oil is a durable interior wood finish, for wooden kitchen worktops, tables and food-preparation surfaces we recommend the purpose-designed Osmo TopOil.

TopOil uses the same general oil-and-wax principle but is specifically designed for wooden worktops, tables and furniture surfaces.

WWFS Recommendation Use Polyx-Oil for wooden floors and general interior timber. Use TopOil for kitchen worktops and other timber work surfaces where food contact and everyday liquid resistance are priorities.

How Should Timber Be Prepared?

Preparation has a major influence on the final appearance and performance.

The timber should be clean, dry and free from old incompatible coatings, grease, polish, silicone and other contamination.

Existing lacquer and paint normally need to be completely removed because Polyx-Oil is intended to penetrate absorbent timber rather than sit on top of an impermeable coating.

Recommended sanding

Sand progressively rather than jumping directly from a coarse abrasive to the final grit.

For flooring, final sanding is generally around P120–P150. Furniture and finer joinery can normally be prepared to a finer grit where appropriate.

Do not over-sand a wooden floor Sanding significantly finer than recommended can reduce the ability of the timber to absorb oil evenly. The smoothest dry surface is not automatically the best surface for an oil finish.

After sanding, remove all dust thoroughly using effective vacuum extraction.

How Do I Apply Osmo Polyx-Oil Original?

Prepare the timber

Sand the floor evenly to the appropriate final grit and thoroughly remove sanding dust. Ensure the surface is clean and dry.

Stir the product thoroughly

Stir Polyx-Oil thoroughly before and during use to ensure the ingredients are evenly distributed.

Apply the first coat very thinly

Apply a thin and even coat using a suitable Osmo floor brush, microfibre roller or approved mechanical application method.

Allow the first coat to dry

Allow approximately 8–10 hours under normal conditions with good ventilation. Low temperature, high humidity or excessive application can significantly increase drying time.

Apply the second thin coat

Once the first coat is fully dry, apply the second coat equally thinly and evenly.

Allow the floor to dry and cure

Allow good airflow and avoid covering the floor with rugs or other non-breathable coverings while the finish continues to harden.

Thin coats are essential More oil does not mean more protection. Excess Polyx-Oil can remain tacky, dry slowly and produce an uneven finish.

How Much Polyx-Oil Do I Need?

Osmo Polyx-Oil Original covers up to approximately 24m² per litre for one coat on correctly prepared smooth timber.

Actual consumption varies according to timber species, sanding, porosity and surface texture.

Do I Need to Sand Between Coats?

Routine sanding between properly applied coats is not normally required.

If the first coat has raised fibres, dust contamination or another minor surface imperfection, light de-nibbing may be appropriate before the next coat.

Avoid introducing unnecessary fine sanding simply because the first coat has dried.

How Long Does Polyx-Oil Original Take to Dry?

Allow approximately 8–10 hours per coat under normal drying conditions with good ventilation.

Drying can take longer when:

  • The product has been applied too heavily.
  • The room is cold.
  • Humidity is high.
  • Air movement is poor.
  • The timber is particularly dense.
Ventilation matters Osmo finishes require oxygen to cure. Good air circulation is therefore important during drying.

How Many Coats Are Required?

For bare untreated timber, Polyx-Oil Original normally requires two thin coats.

An additional third coat should not automatically be applied simply because the area receives heavy traffic.

Correct preparation and correct application of the specified system are more important than adding unnecessary material.

Can Polyx-Oil Be Applied over an Existing Finish?

It depends on the existing coating.

Old lacquer, varnish, paint and other film-forming coatings generally need to be removed so the oil can penetrate the timber.

Existing compatible Osmo or hardwax-oil surfaces may be suitable for cleaning and maintenance rather than complete sanding, provided the existing finish remains sound and compatible.

Raw is not simply a matt version of Original Polyx-Oil Effect Raw uses pigment to counteract the natural colour enrichment caused by clear oil. Always test it on the actual timber before treating the complete floor.

Can Polyx-Oil Be Used on Underfloor Heating?

Yes, where the timber flooring itself is suitable for the underfloor-heating system.

The flooring manufacturer's temperature and humidity requirements must still be followed. For many engineered wood floors, the finished timber surface should not exceed approximately 27°C.

How Do I Clean a Polyx-Oiled Floor?

Remove loose dust and grit regularly using a suitable vacuum, soft broom or dust mop.

For routine damp cleaning, use Osmo Wash & Care diluted according to the manufacturer's instructions.

The floor should be damp-cleaned rather than saturated with water.

Avoid steam cleaners, aggressive household detergents and excessive water.

How Do I Maintain a Polyx-Oiled Floor?

One advantage of a hardwax-oiled floor is that the protective finish can normally be refreshed before complete sanding becomes necessary.

Where the floor begins to look dry or worn, use the compatible Osmo Maintenance Oil after thoroughly cleaning and drying the surface.

Maintenance Oil is applied extremely thinly and is available in different versions to suit the existing finish.

Can Local Areas Be Repaired?

One of the advantages of an oil or hardwax-oil finish is that localised maintenance and repair is often easier than with a continuous lacquer coating.

Small worn areas may be cleaned, prepared and refreshed with the compatible product without necessarily refinishing the complete room.

Colour and sheen should still be tested first, particularly on pigmented floors.

Can Polyx-Oiled Floors Be Sanded and Refinished?

Yes. Where the timber is suitable for sanding and enough wear layer remains, the existing finish can be professionally removed and the floor refinished.

Engineered flooring should always be assessed for wear-layer thickness and previous sanding before aggressive renovation begins.

How often should I use Maintenance Oil?

There is no fixed annual schedule. Apply it when the compatible surface begins to look dry, dull or worn rather than automatically adding oil at a set interval.

Can I use clear Maintenance Oil on a Raw or white floor?

Take care. Clear oil can increase warmth on pale timber. Use the maintenance product recommended for the original pigmented finish and always test first.
