The best applicator is the one that puts the specified product onto the timber at the correct rate, leaves a controllable finish and suits the size and shape of the job. A good lacquer roller is not automatically an oil roller; an oil application fleece is not a cleaning pad; and a polish applicator should never be used as a general mop. Start with the exact coating, then choose the roller, brush, trowel, pad or cloth for that product and stage.
Check the coating instructions before choosing the tool
This guide matches the applicators stocked by WWFS to their normal uses, but the current product label and technical data sheet take priority. Applicator material, pile, width and pressure can change film weight, working time, colour and texture. Always make a representative test through the complete coating system before starting the main area.

Roller, brush, trowel, pad or cloth?
Roller
Fast and consistent on broad, smooth areas when the fibre, pile and width match the coating. It must be loaded evenly and used at the product’s spread rate rather than rolled until the surface merely looks wet.
Brush
Best for cutting in, profiles, grooves, edges and controlled oil application. Brush width, bristle type and softness affect loading, release and visible marks.
Flat trowel or blade
Spreads compatible filler, stain or oil in a very thin controlled layer. A flat finishing blade is not an adhesive notched trowel and must not be used to guess adhesive coverage.
Pad, fleece or cloth
Used to apply, work, wipe or buff particular oils and maintenance products. Colour and material matter. A pad may be mildly abrasive, non-abrasive, absorbent or product-carrying, so choose by the documented stage.
One project may need several applicators. A lacquer floor normally uses a brush at the perimeter and a roller across the field. A penetrating oil may be spread with a trowel or roller, worked into the timber with a pad, then finished with a clean cloth. That does not make the tools interchangeable.
Floor primers and lacquers
Bona SuperCoat for the Bona water-based system
The Bona SuperCoat 250mm sleeve is the safest default for compatible Bona water-based primers and lacquers because Bona designed it for even distribution and an application rate of approximately 100–120g/m². It is particularly useful where film weight matters to levelling, appearance and protection. The three-pack suits multi-coat or larger work where a clean spare is valuable.
Fit it to the Bona 250mm Roller Handle. A full telescopic pole, handle and roller set is the practical route for a customer starting without any compatible coating tools.
Junckers and general coating rollers
The Junckers Microfibre Proline sleeve is intended for smooth application of compatible water-based Junckers floor coatings. The Blue Candy Stripe 8mm sleeve is a useful fine-finish general lacquer roller, while the Rota 13mm nylon pack offers greater carrying capacity for compatible primers, lacquers and coatings.
A different sleeve can change the result
Do not choose only by price or width. Longer pile normally carries and releases more product, while a shorter fine sleeve can apply a thinner film. Either can be wrong if the coating needs a particular wet-film weight. Check coverage while working by measuring the area coated from a known amount, and never stretch the product beyond its specification.

Most sound, clean coating brushes can physically move lacquer, but “can apply” is not the same as “best finish”. For a large floor, use the specified roller for the field and reserve a fine compatible brush for the perimeter. For oil, favour a brush or roller developed to spread a very thin coat without leaving excess in board joints or profiles.
Osmo oils and hardwax oils
Osmo products depend on thin, even application. A heavy coat does not create faster or better protection. It normally extends drying, makes the surface tacky and can produce uneven sheen. Choose the tool from the surface:
- Large floor: use the 250mm Floor Roller & Tray Set, a suitable complete pole set, or the Floor Brush.
- Worktop, tabletop, door or furniture: use the 100mm Roller & Brush Set, a correctly sized Flat Brush, or a product-approved lint-free cloth method.
- Hand-applied smooth surface: use the Oil Application Set with a fresh application fleece.
- Curves, profiles or small repairs: use a narrow Flat Brush or Easy Pad where the exact finish allows cloth application.
- Fresh sleeve between colours or coats: choose the appropriate 250mm replacement microfibre sleeve or 100mm replacement sleeves.
The Osmo Hand Pad Holder Full Set covers several distinct operations. Use application fleece for suitable oil application, white pads for compatible maintenance or product stages, red pads for specified intensive cleaning, and green pads only where the particular professional system calls for them. Do not choose pad colour from appearance alone.
Bona Craft Oil 2K
Bona Craft Oil 2K uses an application and buffing system rather than a simple “roll it on and leave it” method. On suitable prepared timber, the Bona Flat Bladed Trowel can distribute the mixed oil thinly. The correct 407mm Bona pad works the product into the timber, and clean Bona Oil Cloths help remove surplus and complete the documented buffing stage.
Work in manageable sections, keep wet edges controlled and change loaded cloths before they start redistributing surplus or colour into finished areas. Wood stains, coloured oils and fillers
A coloured penetrating product exposes every inconsistency in sanding, absorption and wiping. The Bona Flat Bladed Trowel is useful for compatible coloured oils, stains and resin fillers because its flexible stainless blade can spread product in a very controlled film. Clean lint-free cloths or pads may then be used where the system requires wiping or buffing.
- Prepare the whole sample and floor to the same final sanding process.
- Stir or mix the colour exactly as instructed and keep it uniform throughout the job.
- Do not switch between a trowel, brush and cloth halfway across an area unless the method specifically requires it.
- Use fresh materials before a cloth or pad becomes saturated and starts leaving lap marks.
- Judge the colour only after a representative sample has received its intended protective finish.

Cleaning pads, refresher pads and polish applicators
Maintenance tools are easy to misidentify because they often fit the same mop frame. Label them and store them separately.

Choose the width, frame and spare sleeves
- 250mm rollers: efficient on open floors. Confirm that the sleeve fits the frame and that the frame rotates freely without side-to-side movement.
- 100mm rollers: better for worktops, doors, landings, stairs and restricted areas where a full floor roller is hard to control.
- 25–60mm brushes: useful at perimeters, edges, grooves, frames and profiles.
- 80–150mm brushes: faster on broad boards, doors, worktops, decking and cladding when the finish allows brush application.
- Extension poles: reduce kneeling and help keep pressure consistent. Check the frame or brush connection before ordering.
- Tray inserts: use 250mm tray inserts or 100mm tray inserts to keep the tray clean between products and coats. An insert does not make a contaminated frame or sleeve clean.
Technique and coverage control
- Read the finish instructions and calculate the product required using the specified coverage, number of coats and a sensible allowance.
- Vacuum and remove final dust using the process appropriate to the coating. A Bona Tampico Brush is a machine accessory for lifting fine dust from open grain after sanding, not a coating applicator.
- Prepare enough clean applicators, tray inserts, cloths and replacements before mixing a time-limited product.
- Plan the exit and divide the surface into manageable sections along the grain or board layout.
- Cut in only as far ahead as the coating permits. Keep the field roller connected to the wet edge.
- Load the roller or brush evenly. Avoid dry rolling, pressing excessively or repeatedly working a coating after it starts to set.
- Check actual consumption against coated area. Too little may under-build the system; too much may extend drying or create texture, pooling and weak curing.
- Use a new or completely clean tool when changing product, hardener, stain colour or chemistry.

Clean tools correctly and dispose of oily materials safely
Water-based lacquer tools normally require immediate cleaning in accordance with the coating instructions. Compatible Osmo oil brushes and rollers can be cleaned with Osmo Brush Cleaner & Thinner 8000. Never let a coating dry inside a reusable sleeve and then expect it to apply a smooth final coat.
Oil-soaked cloths and pads can self-heat
Do not leave used oil cloths, fleeces or pads folded, crumpled or piled together. Follow the product label and safety data for immediate safe handling, storage and disposal. Keep them away from heat and combustible material. This applies even when the cloth does not feel hot when the job ends.
Coating-applicator FAQs
Can I use an ordinary decorating roller for floor lacquer?
Only if the coating manufacturer permits its material and pile and you can achieve the specified application rate. A floor-system sleeve such as Bona SuperCoat removes much of that uncertainty for compatible Bona products.
Which roller is best for oil?
Use a microfibre oil roller specified for the exact product, such as the Osmo roller system for compatible Osmo finishes. Do not use a high-capacity lacquer or emulsion sleeve merely because it fits the same frame. Oils normally require exceptionally thin application.
Is the Osmo brush really necessary?
A suitable alternative may apply the product, but the Osmo Flat and Floor Brushes are designed around the thin, controlled application of its wood oils. Their sizes and soft tips make them the most predictable stocked option for that system.
Can the Bona Applicator Pad clean the floor as well?
No. Keep it dedicated to Polish or Refresher. Use the Bona Microfibre Cleaning Pad for cleaning so trapped grit and cleaner residue do not contaminate a maintenance coating.
Can I reuse a roller for the next coat?
Yes, where the product instructions allow it and the sleeve has been cleaned or stored correctly without partial curing, contamination, fibre damage or hardened edges. A questionable sleeve costs far less than correcting a marked final coat.
What should I send WWFS if I am unsure?
Send the exact coating name, product size, surface type, area, whether it is a first coat or maintenance coat, and any tool or frame you already own. Contact WWFS before ordering if the product instructions and applicator appear inconsistent.
