Parquet places particular demands on subfloor flatness. Small blocks follow every dip and ridge, so an adhesive should never be expected to correct an uneven surface.

That does not mean every wood floor can be installed over every heating system. The flooring, adhesive, screed, levelling compound and heating output must form one compatible installation.

Choosing the Correct Adhesive Trowel
The trowel controls how much adhesive is applied and the shape of the adhesive ribs. Choosing the wrong notch can cause insufficient transfer, unnecessary adhesive consumption or difficulties seating the flooring.

How Much Adhesive Do I Need?
Divide the floor area by the realistic coverage for the selected adhesive and trowel, then allow a sensible contingency.
For example, a 30m² engineered floor using Bona R848 at approximately 1,000g/m² will require around 30kg of adhesive, equivalent to two 15kg tubs.
Do not calculate using the maximum advertised coverage where:
- The boards are wide or heavy.
- The subfloor has a noticeable texture.
- A larger trowel notch is needed.
- The installation contains substantial cutting or detailed parquet work.
- The site is far from replacement stock.
Subfloor Requirements Before Gluing
Regardless of the adhesive selected, the subfloor must be:
- Structurally sound.
- Sufficiently dry.
- Clean and free from grease, wax, paint and contamination.
- Free from weak laitance and loose material.
- Flat enough for the selected flooring format.
- Strong enough to resist the stresses created by the timber.
- Compatible with the primer and adhesive system.
Adhesive is not a substitute for a levelling compound. A heavy adhesive bed may accommodate small surface texture, but it should not be used to correct significant dips or unevenness.

Choosing only by price
The cheapest tub is not necessarily the least expensive installation. Board width, adhesive consumption, primer needs and the risk of failure must all be considered.
Using PVA to bond the floor to the subfloor
PVA products in this guide are for compatible tongue-and-groove joints. They are not substitutes for Bona R848, Quantum, Osmo MS Trade or Lecol 5500.
Ignoring moisture readings
A surface can appear dry while retaining excessive moisture internally. Carry out the appropriate moisture test before flooring or DPM selection.
Applying adhesive over dust
The adhesive may bond to the dust rather than the subfloor. Vacuum thoroughly and use Bona D501 where compatible dust binding or priming is required.
Using too small a trowel
Insufficient adhesive can leave hollow areas and inadequate transfer to the back of the flooring.
Spreading too much area at once
Adhesive must remain wet and transferable when the boards are placed. Only spread an area that can be covered within the productās open time.
Failing to check adhesive transfer
Lift a board periodically and inspect the back. Visible adhesive ribs on the subfloor do not automatically prove adequate contact with the flooring.
Allowing adhesive onto finished surfaces
Remove uncured adhesive immediately using the approved cleaning method. Dried contamination can be difficult or impossible to remove without marking the finish.
Walking on the floor too early
Movement before adequate curing can disturb alignment, reduce transfer and create hollow areas. Follow the adhesiveās loading and curing guidance.
