Which Wood-Floor Threshold, Trim or Stair Nosing Should I Use?

The correct trim is chosen from the detail beneath it, not from the profile name or colour alone. Identify the two adjoining surfaces, measure both finished heights, confirm the flooring thickness and joint, preserve the required movement gap and check what the profile can be fixed to. Only then choose its shape, length and finish.

Use two measurements, board thickness and finished floor height

The board thickness and edge joint normally choose the rebate or T&G profile. The completed floor height shows where that profile will sit relative to the subfloor and adjoining surface. Do not automatically add 3mm or 4mm underlay to a 15mm board and order a 20mm nosing. The 15mm nosing is normally fixed to the sound base, with the approved support or gap-filling adhesive beneath it, while the floor remains free to move where required. Dry fit the actual profile before cutting or fixing.

Profile names describe shapes, not universal compatibility

A 15mm label normally describes the flooring or rebate the profile was designed around. It does not prove that every 15mm floor has the same tongue position, joint shape or completed height. Compare the product drawing with the actual flooring and order a sample where available.

What to measure before choosing a trim

Measure after the proposed floor build-up is known. A sketch with dimensions is more useful than a doorway photograph on its own.

1. Both finished heights

Measure from the same fixed datum to the top of each completed surface. Include underlay, adhesive, tile adhesive, carpet underlay and any preparation layer. This establishes the transition and support needed beneath the profile.

2. Flooring and joint

Record the actual board thickness and whether the edge is tongue, groove, click, square or cut. This normally determines the thickness-specific rebate or nosing. Do not add the underlay thickness to the board thickness when choosing it.

3. Opening and coverage

Measure the clear gap, required expansion space, doorway width and the maximum top width available without fouling doors, frames, pipes or furniture.

4. Support and fixing base

Identify what lies beneath the trim. Sound timber, concrete, screed, plywood and fragile or contaminated finishes need different preparation and fixing decisions.

Board thickness, underlay and the gap beneath a nosing

This is one of the most common trim questions. A thickness-specific nosing or rebated profile is normally matched to the wood flooring itself, because its tongue, groove or rebate has to meet the edge of that board. Underlay and flooring adhesive affect the height above the subfloor, but they do not normally turn a 15mm board into a 20mm board for profile selection.

Where the gap-filling adhesive goes

The adhesive supports and fixes the solid nosing or trim to the sound, fixed base beneath it. It is not used to fill the wood floor's expansion space, bond a floating board down at its edge or replace a large unsupported packing detail. At a landing edge, the underlay serving the floating floor normally terminates at the designed fixed-nosing detail so the nosing can be independently supported from the subfloor or stair.

F. Ball STYCCO FLEX is the relevant WWFS gap-filling adhesive for suitable trims and stair nosings on suitably sound substrates. Its bead size, working time, permitted gap, substrate preparation and curing requirements must be followed. For a deep, irregular or structural void, correct or pack the base properly rather than relying on an excessive adhesive bed.

Can the tongue, groove or rebate be adjusted?

Yes. A thickness-specific solid oak profile can sometimes be adapted by a competent fitter using a correctly set router or table saw. This can alter a groove, remove a tongue, deepen or widen a rebate, or form a square edge so that the nosing and board meet correctly. This is useful where a 14mm board is close to a 15mm profile, where the tongue position differs, or where a fully bonded stair detail does not need the factory joint to lock together.

Machining changes the supplied profile

Check the section drawing first and remove only the material needed. The remaining nosing must retain sufficient thickness, bearing and strength, particularly around its leading edge. Support the work securely, use guarded machinery, extraction and the correct cutter or blade, and protect the finished face. Small profiles and natural solid oak can split or kick back if machined incorrectly, so this work is for a competent operator. Refinish any newly exposed timber where required.

Retained T&G or fully bonded butt joint?

With a properly fully bonded tread, the T&G is often useful for alignment but is not the only thing resisting movement. If the board and nosing are both fully supported and bonded to the same stable stair, an accurately machined butt joint can be pushed tightly together and remain secure without the factory tongue locking into the groove. The substrate, adhesive coverage, timber contact, clamping or temporary restraint and curing time must all be correct.

Do not apply this detail to a floating floor

Removing the interlock and relying on a butt joint is a fully bonded construction method. Do not use it to spot-bond the edge of a floating floor, because that can create a fixed point and restrict movement. At the top of a stair, design the transition between the fixed nosing and any floating landing floor so that the landing retains its specified expansion provision.

T-sections for two hard floors at similar heights

A T-section has a visible top that bridges both floor edges and a central stem that sits in the gap. It is the normal starting point where wood meets wood, tile, laminate or another hard surface at the same or a very similar finished height.

When a T-section works well

  • Both surfaces are sufficiently close in height for the top to sit safely and evenly.
  • The central gap is wide enough for the stem while retaining the flooring manufacturer's movement requirement.
  • The top is wide enough to overlap and protect both edges.
  • There is a sound base between the floors to support the approved fixing method.
  • The doorway or junction needs a deliberate break without a pronounced ramp.

A T-section is not a height leveller

If one side leaves the top rocking, unsupported or noticeably tilted, use a suitable ramp or redesign the floor build-up. Do not force a T-section down with adhesive to hide an unsuitable height difference.

Ramp thresholds and reducers for different heights

A ramp or reducer transitions from a higher floor to a lower surface. The WWFS Solid Oak Ramp Threshold is available with selected 7mm, 15mm and 20mm rebates, in sample, 0.9m and 2.4m lengths and unfinished or lacquered finishes.

Choose the ramp from the whole transition

  • High side: the rebate must suit the flooring edge and thickness.
  • Low side: the toe needs firm support and must not create a thin, vulnerable edge.
  • Actual drop: measure the completed levels. A profile designed around 15mm flooring does not automatically resolve a 15mm change in height.
  • Ramp footprint: confirm the sloping face fits without obstructing a door, architrave, appliance or traffic route.
  • Use of the doorway: steep or abrupt changes may be unsuitable for wheels, mobility needs or heavy commercial traffic.

Where the difference is caused by an avoidable preparation problem, correcting the subfloor can produce a safer and neater result than relying on a larger reducer. Read which floor-levelling compound should I use? before finalising the levels.

Wood-to-carpet and carpet-to-carpet thresholds

Carpet has a flexible pile, backing and underlay, so its visible height does not tell you how its edge will behave. The gripper position, stretch direction and edge support must be planned with the threshold.

Wood meeting carpet

The Solid Oak Wood-to-Carpet Reducer is available for selected 15mm and 20mm wood-floor options in sample, 0.9m and 2.4m lengths. It creates the timber transition, but the carpet must still be fitted, tensioned and retained correctly.

Carpet meeting carpet

The Solid Oak Carpet-to-Carpet Threshold provides an oak feature between adjoining carpeted rooms. Check both carpet and underlay build-ups and plan the gripper arrangement on each side before fixing the profile.

  • Do not trap loose carpet beneath a timber profile and expect the adhesive alone to tension it.
  • Keep gripper pins, screws and cut edges safely beneath the completed detail.
  • Confirm that the door closes over the highest part of the pile and threshold.
  • For stairs, landings and stretched carpet, use an experienced carpet or flooring installer.

L-sections and L-beads are different details

Both are L-shaped in section, but they are not automatically interchangeable.

Do not use a thin decorative L-bead as a structural stair nosing. Likewise, do not assume that the rebate on an L-section will suit every click joint or flooring edge. Check the drawing, dry fit a sample and make sure the profile is supported along its full working length.

Flat strips, scotia, quadrant and cork expansion strips

Flat strips

Solid Oak Flat Strips are a simple surface cover for a flat joint, expansion break or cosmetic edge. The current range includes 23 x 5mm, 43 x 5mm and 65 x 8mm options, with sample, 0.9m and 2.4m lengths and unfinished or lacquered finishes. A 2.4m five-length pack is also available for suitable projects.

A flat strip does not positively locate around a board edge like a rebated profile, and it does not reduce a meaningful height difference. It needs sufficient overlap, a stable fixing line and support so that foot traffic cannot flex or lever it away.

Scotia and quadrant

These mouldings normally cover the perimeter movement gap where the existing skirting will remain. 19 x 19mm Solid Oak Scotia has a scooped profile, while 19 x 19mm Solid Oak Quadrant has a rounded quarter profile. The choice is mainly visual, but either profile must cover the full gap without pinning the floor.

  • Fix the moulding to the skirting or wall-side structure, not down through a floating floor.
  • Mitre or scribe corners carefully and allow for door linings, fireplace details and kitchen plinths.
  • Do not use perimeter bead to hide an inadequate or inconsistent expansion gap.
  • Check that the skirting is secure enough to accept the fixing.

Cork expansion strips

Cork Expansion Strips can form a discreet, compressible detail at suitable hearths, thresholds and designed movement joints. Choose the strip size from the specified joint, not as a way to pack an irregular gap solid. Cork is not a universal replacement for the open perimeter or intermediate movement gap required by the flooring manufacturer.

Pipe ferrules for radiator-pipe gaps

A wood floor needs movement space around a pipe, but the raw cut-out does not have to remain visible. Dowelled Solid Oak Pipe Ferrules are supplied as a two-pack in a 17 x 50mm format to create a neat cover around suitable radiator pipes.

Check four dimensions

  1. The pipe's outside diameter, including paint or sleeve.
  2. The movement space required between the pipe and the wood flooring.
  3. The ferrule opening and outer diameter.
  4. The clear space to the wall, skirting, valve and second pipe.

The ferrule covers the gap; it should not wedge the pipe tightly to the moving floor. Confirm that any coating or adhesive is suitable for the pipe temperature and remains clear of valves and serviceable joints.

How to choose a solid oak stair nosing

A stair nosing protects and finishes the leading edge of a tread, but it also becomes part of the staircase geometry. Changing the tread build-up can alter the first or last rise, the going, the projection and how clearly the edge can be seen. This makes nosing selection more safety-critical than choosing a doorway cover strip.

“Universal” does not mean “fits every staircase”

It means the profile is not tied to one thickness-specific tongue-and-groove connection in the same way. Its dimensions, support, coverage and fixing still have to suit the stair. Never cut every nosing until one full tread and riser detail has been dry fitted and checked.

Stair-nosing checklist

  • Survey every tread and riser, including the top landing and bottom step.
  • Confirm whether flooring will be fitted to treads only or to both treads and risers.
  • Check the completed rise and going remain consistent throughout the flight.
  • Provide continuous, sound support beneath the nosing and its adjoining board.
  • Check that the profile's tongue or groove matches the flooring and direction of installation.
  • Confirm projection, visible edge, slip risk, lighting and any required visual contrast.
  • Plan the approved adhesive and any mechanical fixing without weakening the profile or striking concealed services.
  • If the factory T&G does not align, decide whether it can be safely machined or whether a fully bonded butt-joint or universal profile is the better detail.
  • Protect the nose while work continues and do not open the stair to traffic before the fixing system has cured.

Approved Document K covers protection from falling, collision and impact, including stair design in England. A product being sold as a stair nosing does not by itself make an altered staircase compliant. Obtain project-specific professional input where the stair construction, rise, going, guarding, access requirements or Building Regulations are affected.

Coir matting and the matwell edge

WWFS Natural Coir Matting is a 17mm-thick, PVC-backed entrance matting supplied in cut-length options. It helps trap dirt and moisture, but its performance and appearance depend on a flat, correctly sized and fully supported matwell.

Plan the well before laying the surrounding floor

  • Measure the matwell at several points because walls and frames may not be square.
  • Allow for the actual matting thickness, backing and expected compression under use.
  • Set the supporting base so the finished mat is secure and close to the surrounding level without creating a trip edge.
  • Use a suitable supported edge detail, such as an appropriately sized solid oak L-section, where the design requires it.
  • Keep the surrounding wood floor's movement provision intact.
  • Check the entrance door opens over the new surface and that weather seals still work.
  • Plan how the mat can be lifted for cleaning without damaging the trim.

Do not size the mat from the nominal opening before the edge profile is installed. Establish the finished internal dimensions of the completed frame, then confirm the product's cutting tolerance and current ordering options.

Thresholds and floating-floor movement

A threshold normally covers a movement gap; it must not cancel it. This is particularly important with floating floors, which move as one connected area.

The permitted continuous area varies by floor construction, joint system, room shape and manufacturer. Use the engineered-wood-flooring selector and the exact flooring instructions rather than applying one universal expansion figure.

What else will I need to fit and finish the trim?

Fitting adhesive

F. Ball STYCCO FLEX 290ml is a rapid-curing, high-grab, gap-filling adhesive applied with a standard cartridge gun. F. Ball approves it for suitable stair nosings, trims, skirting, architrave, carpet gripper and header rows on suitably sound substrates. It is particularly useful where a 15mm profile matching the board has to be independently supported above the subfloor because the adjoining floor sits on underlay or an adhesive bed. Confirm substrate preparation, material compatibility, bead size, permitted gap, open time, support, cure time and whether the project also requires mechanical fixing.

The adhesive is only as strong as the surface beneath it

Remove dust, grease, weak paint, friable screed and incompatible residue using the approved method. The gap-filling property can support a controlled fitting difference, but it is not permission to bridge a large unsupported void or repair a weak base. Check for pipes, cables and underfloor heating before drilling or mechanically fixing.

Cutting and dry fitting

  1. Check the product and finish before cutting.
  2. Mark the visible face, orientation and doorway side.
  3. Dry fit the full length and confirm the door, movement gap and adjoining edges.
  4. Use a sharp, suitable fine-tooth blade and support the profile close to the cut.
  5. Ease and seal cut ends as required by the selected finishing system.
  6. Vacuum the base and complete one final dry fit before applying adhesive.
  7. Hold the profile in the correct position while curing without forcing it down onto a moving floor.

Unfinished or lacquered oak?

Choose unfinished

Best when the profile needs sanding, staining or oiling to complement the floor. Natural oak and stain absorption vary, so order a sample and complete a test piece. Keep the intended bonding face free from contaminating finish.

Choose lacquered

Best when a ready-finished natural-oak appearance is suitable. It saves site finishing, but it is not an exact match for every factory floor. Protect the lacquer during cutting and remove any damage before installation.

Colour and protective finishes

  • Osmo Polyx-Oil Original provides a clear hardwax-oil finish for suitable interior oak. Choose the sheen and apply the complete Osmo system in thin coats to properly prepared timber.
  • Morrells Light Fast Wood Stain provides professional colour and grain definition, but it is a stain, not a protective final finish. It must be sealed with a compatible lacquer system.
  • Morrells SCANDI Wood Stain offers traditional and contemporary colours and also requires its specified topcoat route.
  • Do not mix a stain, oil and lacquer from different systems simply because the colours look similar. Confirm compatibility and test the full finishing build-up on matching oak.

Common threshold, trim and nosing mistakes

  • Choosing from a photograph. Without finished heights and profile dimensions, similar-looking details can need different trims.
  • Using only one measurement. Board thickness chooses the compatible rebate or joint; the total build-up determines the profile's final position and support.
  • Adding underlay to the nosing size. A 15mm board over 3mm or 4mm underlay normally still needs the compatible 15mm nosing, not a 20mm nosing.
  • Using a T-section across a step. A rocking or tilted top is not a safe reducer.
  • Ordering from nominal thickness alone. Tongue position, click shape and rebate geometry also matter.
  • Clamping a floating floor. Fixing through the floor or filling its gap solid can restrict movement.
  • Using a flat strip without support. Foot traffic can flex or lever a bridging strip away.
  • Fixing scotia to the floor. Perimeter bead should normally be fixed to the skirting or wall side.
  • Tight-fitting around pipes. A ferrule covers the movement space; it does not remove it.
  • Assuming universal nosing is universal to every stair. Its geometry and support still need a designed detail.
  • Changing stair rises unintentionally. Overlaying treads can create an inconsistent first or last step.
  • Relying on adhesive to repair a weak base. The trim will detach with the dust, paint or friable surface.
  • Cutting every length before one is tested. Natural timber and site openings vary.

  • Building a matwell from the mat's nominal size. Fit the frame first, then order from the finished internal dimensions.

Threshold, trim and stair-nosing FAQs

Do I need a T-section or a ramp?

Use a T-section where two hard surfaces finish at the same or a sufficiently similar height. Use a ramp or reducer where the completed levels differ and the profile's rebate and slope suit the measured transition. Do not force a T-section to sit diagonally across a step.

Should I order from the board thickness or the finished floor height?

Use the board thickness and edge joint to choose the compatible rebate or T&G profile. Use the completed floor height to determine the transition and how the fixed profile is supported from the subfloor. For example, a 15mm floor over 4mm underlay normally still starts with the 15mm nosing, with the space beneath the nosing dealt with by the approved fixed support or gap-filling adhesive.

Can I use a 20mm nosing with a 15mm engineered floor on 3mm or 4mm underlay?

Normally no. Do not add the underlay thickness to the board thickness. The thickness-specific nosing must match the 15mm board and joint, while the nosing itself is fixed and supported from the sound stair or subfloor beneath it. A 20mm T&G profile may place its joint or rebate incorrectly even if the total floor build-up is close to 20mm.

Can a 14mm engineered floor use a 15mm nosing?

Often it can where the actual tongue, groove, rebate and visible level fit correctly. The small difference may be taken up within the approved gap-filling adhesive bed beneath the fixed nosing. Dry fit a sample and confirm the joint rather than assuming every 14mm board fits every 15mm profile.

Can gap-filling adhesive make up the underlay height beneath a nosing?

Yes, where the profile and substrate instructions permit it and the space is within the adhesive's approved capacity. The underlay terminates at the designed detail, and the nosing is bedded independently onto the sound fixed base. Do not fill the expansion gap, bond the edge of a floating board or use an excessive adhesive depth to bridge a structural void.

Do I have to use the tongue and groove on a stair nosing?

Not always. If the flooring and nosing are fully supported and fully bonded to the same stable stair or landing base, a competent fitter can sometimes machine off or adjust the joint and form a tight butt connection. The flooring adhesive beneath the board and the suitable nosing adhesive beneath the profile provide the primary fixing. This method is not a shortcut for floating or unsupported flooring.

Can I alter a 15mm or 20mm solid oak nosing with a router or table saw?

Yes, where the solid-oak section has enough material and the alteration leaves a strong, fully supported profile. Check the drawing, make a trial cut and dry fit it before machining every length. Do not cut away critical material around the leading edge, and use a competent operator with properly guarded machinery and extraction.

Where is PVA used in a fully bonded stair detail?

A D3 PVA is used in a retained timber tongue-and-groove joint, or at a clean, tight timber-to-timber joint where the chosen professional method permits it. It does not go underneath as a substitute for the wood-flooring adhesive. Fully bond the tread board with the specified wood-floor adhesive and fix the nosing with its specified compatible adhesive.

Can a threshold be fixed over a floating floor?

It can cover the movement gap if the flooring and profile systems permit it, but it must not pin the floating floor. The usual principle is to fix the trim independently to a suitable base while leaving the specified movement space beneath.

Can I use a flat strip instead of a T-section?

Only where a surface-fixed cover strip is suitable, fully supported and wide enough. A flat strip does not have the central locating stem of a T-section and will not correct a height change.

What is the difference between scotia and quadrant?

Both can cover a perimeter gap. Scotia has a concave, scooped face, while quadrant has a convex quarter-round face. Choose the appearance and coverage required, then fix it to the skirting or wall side so the floor remains free to move.

Are pipe ferrules included when I buy flooring?

They are separate finishing accessories. The WWFS dowelled oak ferrules are supplied as a two-pack. Check pipe size and spacing before ordering.

Which adhesive should I use for an oak threshold?

It depends on the profile, substrate, traffic, environment and manufacturer's fitting method. F. Ball STYCCO FLEX is designed for suitable trims and stair nosings on sound substrates, but compatibility and any mechanical-fixing requirement must still be confirmed for the exact detail.

Can I stain an unfinished oak threshold to match my floor?

Yes, unfinished oak can be test-stained and protected with a compatible complete finishing system. An exact match is not guaranteed because the floor and profile may differ in timber, sanding and factory treatment. Always test a sample and protect the bonding face.

How deep should a coir matwell be?

The current WWFS coir is 17mm thick with a PVC backing, but the supporting recess must be designed from the actual product, compression, edge profile and desired finished level. Do not simply make a 17mm hole without allowing for the complete detail.

Can I choose a stair nosing without changing the staircase?

Sometimes, but adding flooring and a nosing changes the tread build-up and can alter the first or last rise. Survey the complete flight and obtain professional input where the geometry, structural support or Building Regulations may be affected.
