Engineered wood flooring gives you a real timber surface with a more stable multi-layer construction than traditional solid wood. That makes it suitable for a much wider range of modern homes, including many installations over underfloor heating.
But engineered flooring is not one single product. Board width, thickness, wear layer, oak grade, surface texture, colour, finish and installation method can all change how the floor looks and performs.

What Is Engineered Wood Flooring?
Engineered wood flooring has a genuine hardwood surface bonded to a stable supporting core. The visible surface is real timber, so it has the grain, knots, colour variation and ageing characteristics of a conventional wooden floor.
The difference is underneath.
Rather than producing the entire board from one solid piece of timber, engineered construction uses multiple layers arranged to improve dimensional stability. Premium products may use a multi-layer plywood core beneath the hardwood wear layer.
For example, the Staki engineered flooring stocked by WWFS uses a European oak top layer bonded to a birch plywood base. Its 15mm plank and herringbone ranges use a substantial 4mm oak top layer.
Why choose engineered rather than solid wood?

Plank or Herringbone?
This is usually the first major design decision.
Long, clean and timeless
Plank flooring uses long boards installed in parallel rows. It works in almost every style of property and generally creates a calmer, more continuous appearance.
Long boards can help visually extend a room, particularly when laid in the direction of its longest dimension or towards a main source of natural light.
Decorative and architectural
Herringbone uses shorter blocks arranged in a repeated zig-zag pattern. The layout creates more visual movement and turns the flooring itself into a major design feature.
It works particularly well in hallways, kitchens, open-plan spaces and traditional interiors, but also suits contemporary schemes when combined with a pale or natural finish.
Herringbone requires more setting out, cutting and installation time than straight plank flooring. Engineered herringbone should normally be fully bonded to a correctly prepared subfloor rather than floated.

How Wide Should My Plank Flooring Be?
Board width changes the scale and character of a room.
The current WWFS plank range includes options around 125mm, 180mm and 190mm wide, allowing you to choose between narrower traditional proportions and broader contemporary planks.

Wider is not automatically better. In a very small room, an extremely wide plank may dominate the space, while a narrower board can provide more visual detail.

What Does the Thickness Mean?
Engineered flooring specifications normally show two important dimensions:
- Total board thickness — the complete construction.
- Wear-layer thickness — the real hardwood surface above the core.
The current WWFS range includes products around 14mm, 15mm and 18mm total thickness.
Total thickness affects finished floor height, thresholds, stair nosings and compatibility with adjoining surfaces. However, it does not tell you on its own how many times the floor could potentially be refinished.
What Is the Wear Layer?
The wear layer is the real timber surface above the engineered core.
A thicker wear layer provides more material for future professional sanding and renovation. For example, the 15mm Staki flooring sold by WWFS uses a 4mm European oak top layer.
Other engineered floors may use a different wear-layer thickness, so always check the individual product specification.
Prime Grade or Rustic Grade?
Flooring grade describes the visual character permitted within the timber. It is not simply a measure of quality.
Cleaner and more consistent
Prime-grade oak generally contains fewer and smaller knots, less dramatic colour variation and a calmer overall appearance.
It works particularly well in minimal, contemporary interiors where the aim is for the floor to look clean and understated.
More natural character
Rustic flooring allows larger knots, filled knots, colour variation, small cracks and other natural characteristics.
This produces a more varied floor and is often chosen precisely because it looks unmistakably like natural timber.
Rustic does not mean defective. Knots, filled areas, grain variation and colour movement are deliberately included within the grading specification.
The exact grading rules vary between manufacturers. For example, Staki rustic herringbone allows natural colour variation, filled surface cracks and numerous knots within its published grading limits.
Brushed or Smooth?
Surface texture changes both the appearance and feel of the floor.
Smooth sanded
A smooth surface creates a clean, refined appearance and allows the timber grain itself to provide most of the visible texture.
WWFS stocks smooth-sanded engineered oak within its own flooring range where a simple natural finish is preferred.
Brushed
Brushing removes some of the softer grain from the oak surface, leaving the harder grain slightly more prominent.
This produces additional texture and tends to emphasise the grain structure. Brushed surfaces can suit both rustic traditional floors and modern matt finishes.
Oiled or Lacquered Engineered Flooring?
Both are excellent professional flooring finishes. The choice is mostly about appearance, feel and future maintenance.

Neither system is maintenance-free, and neither is automatically more durable in every situation. Product quality, number of factory coats, use of the room and ongoing care all matter.

What About Invisible, Pale and Smoked Finishes?
Modern engineered flooring is available in far more than a simple “natural oak” colour.
The current WWFS range includes:

- Smoked oak.
- Smoked and white finishes.
- Grey and cooler contemporary tones.
- Dark brown and near-black finishes.

For example, Staki Seaford uses an invisible hardwax-oil system on rustic European oak, while other Staki floors use coloured LED oils or lacquered finishes.
If you want complete control over the final colour, an unfinished engineered floor can be an excellent option. It can then receive a compatible stain, oil, primer or lacquer after installation.
Which Flooring Is Best for a Small Room?
There is no rule saying small rooms require narrow boards.
Pale wide planks can actually make a small room feel calmer and more open because there are fewer visual joins. A narrower plank introduces more board lines and can produce a more traditional appearance.
Herringbone can also work extremely well in smaller rooms, but the pattern becomes a strong visual feature. Consider the scale of the herringbone block relative to the room.
Which Flooring Is Best for a Large Open-Plan Room?
Longer and wider planks are particularly effective in large rooms because their scale matches the space and reduces the number of visual joints.
Herringbone is equally effective where a more architectural statement is wanted. In very large spaces, correct setting out becomes especially important because any error in the centre line or pattern alignment can become increasingly obvious across the room.
Can Engineered Wood Flooring Be Used in a Kitchen?
Yes. Suitable engineered wood flooring can work extremely well in kitchens when correctly installed and maintained.
Engineered construction offers greater stability than traditional solid timber, but it is still real wood.
- Wipe spills promptly.
- Do not allow standing water to remain on the floor.
- Use suitable entrance matting.
- Protect high-wear areas sensibly.
- Avoid steam cleaning.
Kitchen installation is very different from routinely wet environments such as bathrooms. Always check the individual manufacturer’s location guidance.
Can Engineered Flooring Be Used in Bathrooms?
We would not treat a bathroom in the same way as a normal kitchen or living area.
Frequent running water, high humidity and the potential for water to reach joints and edges make bathrooms a more demanding environment. Some manufacturers do not recommend or warranty their engineered wood floors in bathrooms.
Check the exact flooring manufacturer's guidance before specifying timber in any routinely wet area.
Engineered Flooring and Underfloor Heating
One of the main advantages of engineered construction is that many engineered floors are suitable for use over underfloor heating.
Always check the exact flooring specification rather than assuming every engineered product is suitable.
The current Staki plank and herringbone products stocked by WWFS are specified as compatible with underfloor heating, and V4 states that its engineered collection can be used with suitable UFH systems when installed in accordance with its guidance.
Important principles
- The heating system should be fully commissioned before flooring installation.
- The screed and subfloor must be tested for moisture.
- The flooring must be acclimatised in accordance with its manufacturer instructions.
- The system should be brought back into use gradually after installation.
- The wood-floor surface temperature must remain within the manufacturer's maximum.
- For V4 flooring, the published maximum surface temperature is 27°C, including beneath rugs.
Should I Glue Down or Float My Engineered Floor?
The answer depends on the specific floor. Some engineered plank products can be floated, fully bonded or, in certain constructions, mechanically fixed. Engineered herringbone is normally fully bonded.
Adhesive across the entire subfloor
A permanently flexible wood flooring adhesive is spread over the prepared subfloor and the boards are bedded directly into it.
The finished floor generally feels very solid, produces less vertical movement and is particularly suitable for herringbone and many UFH installations.
Installed over underlay
Compatible plank flooring is installed over a suitable wood-flooring underlay rather than fixed directly to the subfloor.
It can be quicker to install, but only floors specifically designed and approved for floating installation should be used this way.
The flooring manufacturer's installation guide always takes priority.
What Underlay Should I Use?
Underlay is only relevant where the selected engineered plank is approved for floating installation.
WWFS stocks professional Duralay wood-flooring underlays, including Duralay Timbermate underlays.
Underlay selection should take account of:
- Subfloor type.
- Whether a moisture barrier is required.
- Impact-sound reduction.
- Compressive strength.
- Thermal resistance where UFH is present.
- The flooring manufacturer's installation instructions.
Do not install underlay beneath a fully bonded wood floor.
What Adhesive Should I Use?
For fully bonded installation, use a purpose-designed permanently flexible wood flooring adhesive suitable for both the floor and subfloor.
Within the WWFS range, Bona R848 is our starting recommendation for most engineered wood flooring up to approximately 190mm wide, including many herringbone installations.
For wider boards and more demanding installations, Bona Quantum is normally the stronger option.

Extremely important.
A premium engineered floor will only perform as well as the surface beneath it.
The subfloor should be:
- Structurally sound.
- Dry enough for the selected flooring system.
- Flat within the flooring manufacturer's tolerance.
- Free from loose material and contamination.
- Suitable for the chosen adhesive or underlay system.
Concrete and screed should be correctly moisture-tested rather than judged visually.

How Much Flooring Should I Order?
Flooring is sold by pack rather than by individual square metre, so you need enough full packs to cover the measured area plus cutting and selection waste.
As a general starting point:
- Straight plank: allow approximately 5–10% additional material.
- Herringbone: allow approximately 10–15% because of the additional cutting and pattern layout.
Complicated layouts, diagonal installation, numerous doorways or unusually shaped rooms may require more.
How Should I Measure for Herringbone?
Measure the full floor area carefully and include all recesses, doorways and connecting spaces that will receive flooring.
Herringbone normally creates more offcuts than straight plank because both sides of the pattern need cutting into the room perimeter.
Correct setting out can sometimes reuse offcuts elsewhere, but the theoretical minimum should not be relied upon when ordering.
Do I Need Expansion Gaps?
Yes. Engineered flooring is more stable than solid timber, but it is still hygroscopic and changes dimension as environmental humidity changes.
Expansion must be allowed around walls, door frames, hearths, columns and other fixed obstructions in accordance with the flooring manufacturer's installation guide.
Larger areas and transitions between rooms may also require additional expansion breaks.

Unfinished engineered oak is a very good choice when you cannot find the exact colour or sheen you want in a factory-finished floor.
The floor is installed unfinished and then receives the chosen finishing system on site.
This allows you to control:

- Natural or whitewashed appearance.
- Oil or lacquer specification.
- Sheen level.
- Overall colour consistency after installation.

Will my floor look exactly like the sample?
No two real wood boards are identical. A sample accurately represents the finish and general character, but knots, grain and colour variation across the full installation are natural.
