Wood flooring can be fully bonded, floated over underlay or mechanically fixed, but the methods are not interchangeable. The correct choice depends on the exact flooring, construction, board width and thickness, joint, subfloor, room layout and underfloor heating.
Use a professional wood-floor installer
WWFS recommends that wood flooring is installed by an experienced professional. Always read the flooring manufacturer's current instructions before preparation or installation. Those product-specific instructions take priority over this general guide.

Not every engineered floor can be floated
Many engineered planks in the WWFS range can be floated or fully bonded, but other products are specified as fully bonded only. Patterned flooring, solid parquet and wider boards commonly have tighter restrictions. Check the installation method shown on the exact product page and in the manufacturer's instructions.
Before choosing any installation method
Identify the floor
Confirm engineered or solid construction, plank or pattern, click or tongue-and-groove joint, thickness, width and pack instructions.
Assess the subfloor
The base must be sound, dry, clean and sufficiently flat for the selected system. Use our subfloor-preparation guide.
Measure moisture
Use the correct test for screed or timber. Read how to test moisture and choose a DPM or primer.
Check UFH
Confirm that the flooring and the complete installation system are approved. Use our engineered flooring and UFH guide.
Fully bonded installation
Fully bonding means applying a compatible wood-flooring adhesive to the prepared subfloor and pressing each board or block into the adhesive bed. It is the most controlled route for parquet, solid flooring, wide boards and demanding installations.
When WWFS normally recommends full bonding
- Herringbone, chevron, mosaic and other patterned flooring.
- Solid parquet blocks and solid wood floors.
- Wide or long engineered planks.
- Floors over underfloor heating where the flooring and adhesive system approve it.
- Areas where a firmer feel and reduced vertical movement are preferred.
- Products whose instructions state fully bonded only.

Read Which Wood-Flooring Adhesive Should I Choose? before selecting the adhesive. Adhesive rib height does not correct an unlevel floor; prepare or level the base first.
Tub adhesive or sausage system?
A tub-and-trowel system spreads adhesive across the prepared base. A compatible 600ml foil-sausage system applies specified beads using a barrel gun. Do not change from trowel to bead application simply for convenience—the adhesive, bead pattern, board and substrate must all permit it.

Do not glue and fix to compensate for an uneven subfloor
Some installers use adhesive plus screws or nails to pull boards down over an uneven base. WWFS does not recommend using fixings as a substitute for correct subfloor preparation. The floor should be brought within the flooring manufacturer's flatness tolerance before installation.
Floating installation
A floating floor is not fixed to the subfloor. Suitable boards are joined to each other and installed over an approved underlay, allowing the floor to move as one surface.
Which floors can be floated?
- Engineered plank flooring whose product instructions explicitly permit floating.
- Approved click-joint planks assembled using their stated locking method.
- Approved tongue-and-groove engineered planks with continuously glued joints.
WWFS does not recommend floating herringbone, chevron, parquet, patterned floors, solid parquet, general solid wood flooring or products marked fully bonded only. Wider boards and large uninterrupted areas may also be excluded by the manufacturer.

Click joints
Assemble the exact locking profile in the sequence and angle stated by the flooring manufacturer. Different click systems can look similar but behave differently. Do not hammer a joint directly or add PVA unless the product instructions specifically require adhesive.
Glued tongue-and-groove joints
Where floating is permitted, apply a continuous bead of the approved D3 joint adhesive to the position stated by the flooring manufacturer. Bond both long and end joints as instructed; spot-gluing leaves unsupported sections and is not equivalent to a continuously bonded joint.
Room size and movement breaks
Every floating system has limits for maximum uninterrupted length, width or area. Large rooms, narrow connections, doorways and adjoining rooms may require movement breaks and thresholds. Check the exact manufacturer's specification rather than applying one generic square-metre limit to every floor.
Secret screws, nails, cleats and staples
Mechanical fixing is normally considered for approved thicker tongue-and-groove flooring over a suitable timber subfloor, battens or joists. Many products in the WWFS range restrict this route to suitable 18–20mm or thicker flooring; 15mm boards must not be mechanically fixed unless the manufacturer specifically approves it.

- Porta-Nails 16-gauge T cleats for a compatible nailer and flooring system.
- Compatible Spotnails L- or T-profile flooring nails selected by machine, gauge and length.
- Approved flooring staples driven by the exact compatible stapler.

Check for pipes and cables
Locate joists, electrical cables, water and gas pipes and any heating components before drilling, screwing, nailing or stapling. Confirm flooring thickness, fixing angle and safe penetration.
Expansion gaps, room size and board layout
Wood flooring moves as moisture and room conditions change. Provide the continuous perimeter and obstruction gaps required by the flooring manufacturer at walls, frames, pipes, hearths and fixed objects. Never trap a floating floor beneath fitted units, thresholds, skirting or fixed joinery.
End-joint staggering
Stagger plank end joints to maintain a stable and natural layout. Many WWFS flooring instructions require at least a 200mm stagger and advise against a repeating brick-bond pattern, but the exact requirement belongs to the selected product. Patterned flooring follows its own setting-out and header-joint rules.
Thresholds and covers
Use movement breaks wherever the flooring manufacturer requires them, including between rooms or where the maximum uninterrupted span is exceeded. Choose the correct profile using our threshold, trim and stair-nosing guide. Do not pin scotia or a movement cover through a floating floor.
Underfloor heating without repeating the full UFH guide
Check that the exact floor is approved for UFH and use only a compatible installation method. Full bonding is commonly preferred because it provides close contact with the prepared base, but the flooring and adhesive instructions decide the system. Some engineered floors permit floating over a low-resistance underlay.

Common installation mistakes
Assuming every engineered floor can float
Check the exact product. Many parquet, wide-board and fully bonded products cannot be floated.
Using adhesive as levelling compound
Adhesive accommodates normal texture within its specification; it does not correct an uneven subfloor.
Spot-gluing T&G joints
Where joint adhesive is required, use the continuous application method stated by the manufacturer.
Adding glue to an unapproved click joint
A locking profile must be assembled as designed. Extra glue can prevent engagement and change movement.
Ignoring maximum spans
Large rooms and connected spaces may need movement breaks even when the overall square meterage seems modest.
Fixing an unsuitable thin floor
Do not nail or screw a 15mm board unless the manufacturer expressly approves the fixing and base.
Poor end-joint staggering
Avoid weak clusters and repeating brick-bond layouts. Follow the product's minimum stagger.
Trapping a floating floor
Do not fix skirting, scotia, thresholds or units through the moving floor.
Installation FAQs
Can engineered wood flooring be fully bonded?
Most suitable engineered flooring can be fully bonded, but the exact flooring, adhesive and subfloor must be compatible. Check the product instructions.
Can all engineered flooring be floated?
No. Many engineered planks permit floating, but other engineered products are fully bonded only. Patterned and wider flooring commonly has additional restrictions.
Should tongue-and-groove joints be glued on a floating floor?
Yes, where the flooring instructions specify a glued T&G floating installation. Use the approved joint adhesive continuously in the stated groove position. Click joints normally follow their locking instructions without added PVA unless specifically stated.
Should solid wood flooring be floated?
WWFS does not recommend floating solid wood flooring or solid parquet. Fully bond it, or mechanically fix an approved thicker board to a suitable timber base where the manufacturer permits.
Should parquet or herringbone be floated?
No. WWFS recommends fully bonding parquet, herringbone, chevron and patterned flooring to a correctly prepared subfloor.
Can I glue and nail a floor because the subfloor is uneven?
No. Fixings must not be used to pull boards over an unlevel base. Prepare or level the subfloor to the flooring manufacturer's tolerance first.
How large can a floating floor be?
There is no single limit covering every brand and joint system. Use the selected flooring's maximum uninterrupted length, width or area and provide movement breaks where required.
How much should plank end joints be staggered?
Many WWFS product instructions specify at least 200mm, but always follow the exact floor's requirement. Avoid a repeating brick-bond pattern unless the product design calls for it.
