Morrells SCANDI Wood Stain creates Nordic-inspired colour while keeping the character of the timber visible. These solvent-based pigmented stains give you control over the strength of colour through your application and wiping technique.
Our selected colours are Driftwood, Light Cashmere, White and Strong Black, in 100ml samples, 1L and 5L. Use a sample to establish the look on your own timber before starting the full project.
Always Sample First: Photographs and colour charts are guides only. Timber species, natural colour, grain, sanding, application and the final topcoat all affect the result. Order a 100ml sample and test the complete stain and finishing system on the actual timber. Use the same mixing and application method for your sample and the finished job.
Heavy Pigment: Thorough Mixing Is Essential. The colour pigments settle at the bottom of the bottle or tin. Applying the liquid above this sediment can produce a much paler or inconsistent colour. Shake sample bottles thoroughly and stir tins thoroughly before use, then mix again regularly while working.

Mixing: Bring All the Pigment Back into Suspension
- Sample bottles: secure the cap and shake thoroughly, loosening any settled pigment at the base. Check that the colour is uniform before pouring.
- 1L and 5L tins: stir right down to the bottom and around the sides, lifting and dispersing all settled pigment. A quick stir at the surface is not enough.
- For tins, our preferred method is slow mechanical mixing using equipment specifically suitable for flammable solvent-based coatings and the working environment. Otherwise, mix thoroughly by hand. Avoid splashing and drawing excessive air into the stain.
- Continue until the stain is evenly mixed with no settled pigment remaining. Judge by complete mixing, not a fixed number of seconds.
- Re-stir regularly during application and before refilling your working container. Thoroughly mix the original tin before decanting.
Controlling the Colour

Wiltshire Wood Recommendation: Test both methods on spare timber to choose your preferred effect. More colour should come from an even distribution of pigment, not a thick layer of surplus stain. Keep the chosen technique consistent across the whole area.
Preparation & Application
- Prepare clean, dry, bare timber, removing old coatings and contamination. Sand uniformly; Morrells specifies 180 grit for preparation. Confirm the result on your test area.
- Remove sanding dust thoroughly, including edges and joints.
- Mix the stain fully before applying.
- Work in manageable sections, blending adjoining areas while wet. Use a suitable stain brush or a soft, white, lint-free cloth.
- Lay off with the grain and remove surplus consistently. Avoid coloured or printed rags.
- Check for heavy edges, pools and uneven pigment while working. Keep mixing the stain throughout the job.
- Allow the stain to dry fully before the protective finishing system is applied.
Reworking Uneven Colour Before Sealing
Practical application tip: Before any sealer or topcoat is applied, a small amount of fresh, thoroughly mixed stain on a white lint-free cloth may help re-wet and redistribute an uneven area. Test on your sample first, work gently with the grain and blend into the surrounding area. This can add colour as well as move it, so a seamless repair is not guaranteed.
Do not flood the timber or attempt this through a sealer or lacquer. Allow any reworked area to dry fully again before finishing. If you intend to use a separate solvent or thinner, ask us or Morrells to confirm the correct product for your exact stain first.

Drying depends on temperature, humidity, timber absorption and the amount applied. Touch dry does not mean ready for a flooring topcoat. Allow additional drying time where necessary.
Sealing & Aftercare
SCANDI is a colour treatment and needs a protective topcoat. Check the proposed sealer and lacquer system for compatibility with your exact stain, and test the complete system before treating the full floor. Clear finishes can change the appearance of pale colours. Once cured, follow the care instructions for the final finish.
Safe Use: Follow the container label and current safety data sheet. Provide effective ventilation, keep away from ignition sources and use suitable protective equipment. Handle and dispose of used cloths and leftover stain according to the product safety guidance.

Overcoat with a Water-Based Floor Lacquer
For a lacquered finish over SCANDI, consider the options below as part of a tested stain, sealer and lacquer system. Allow the stain to dry fully, remove all surplus pigment and follow the selected finishing system's instructions.

Choosing a finish for pale colours: Start by comparing NATRO% and Traffic HD Raw on your stained sample. Low sheen describes the surface appearance, not a guarantee that the colour will stay unchanged. The sealer and lacquer can still alter the tone, so assess the complete dried system.
