Fast-Drying High-Solid Protection

Osmo Polyx-Oil Rapid is a high-solid wood finish formulated to provide dependable protection while significantly reducing the drying time between coats.

Its combination of natural oils and hard waxes remains within and at the surface of the timber as the finish cures, creating a hardwearing surface with excellent resistance to water, dirt, abrasion and common household spillages.

Osmo also approves application using its Flat Brush, Microfibre Roller and Floor Brush. The correct tool will depend on the size, shape and accessibility of the timber being treated.

Available Sizes

Coverage is based on approximately 24m² per litre for one coat. Actual coverage will vary according to timber species, surface porosity, sanding preparation, application tool and the quantity applied.

Technical Information

Coverage, drying and curing times are approximate. Temperature, humidity, airflow, timber species, preparation and application thickness will all affect the result. Low temperatures, limited ventilation and excessive application will significantly delay drying.

Surface Preparation

• Ensure the timber is clean, dry, frost-free and free from grease, wax, dirt and contamination.
• The moisture content of the timber must not exceed approximately 18%.
• Completely remove old paint, varnish, lacquer and other film-forming finishes.
• Clean compatible old microporous oil finishes thoroughly before assessing whether they are suitable for recoating.
• Repair or replace loose, damaged or unstable timber before sanding.
• Countersink protruding nails, pins and other fixings.
• Fill suitable cracks, holes and imperfections before completing the final sanding sequence.
• Sand the entire surface evenly back to clean, absorbent timber.
• For flooring, complete a consistent professional sanding sequence and normally finish around P120, subject to timber species and application method.
• For furniture and fine joinery, a finer final sanding sequence may be appropriate.
• Vacuum thoroughly, including floor joints, edges, mouldings and corners.
• Stir the oil thoroughly with a flat stirring stick before and during application.
• Complete a trial application on the actual timber before treating the full surface.

Floor Application

1. Bring the product to normal room temperature and stir thoroughly before use. Do not thin.
2. Ensure the floor is completely clean, dry and free from sanding dust.
3. Cut in around skirting boards, corners, door frames and thresholds using a suitable brush from our brush range .
4. Apply the first coat exceptionally thinly using an Osmo Floor Brush or Osmo Floor Roller Set .
5. Work methodically along the timber grain and spread the oil thoroughly within approximately 10–15 minutes.
6. Remove or redistribute any excess product immediately.
7. Avoid leaving puddles, heavy deposits, thick brush marks or visible roller edges.
8. Work in manageable sections and maintain a wet edge across the floor.
9. Check the surface from several angles while wet and redistribute any visibly heavy areas.
10. Allow the first coat to dry for approximately 4–5 hours under good ventilation.
11. Once the first coat is properly dry, apply a second coat just as thinly and evenly.
12. Continue ventilating throughout drying and curing.
13. Allow the second coat to dry before permitting light foot traffic.
14. Keep traffic light and avoid covering the floor during the curing period.

Applying to Stairs, Furniture and Joinery

1. Prepare and sand the timber evenly, then remove all dust.
2. Select a suitable brush or applicator for the size and shape of the component.
3. Apply the oil thinly with the grain, taking extra care around mouldings, corners, joints and end grain.
4. Spread the finish well within approximately 10–15 minutes.
5. Check vertical surfaces for runs and heavy deposits before the finish begins to dry.
6. Spread out or remove any excess oil immediately.
7. Allow approximately 4–5 hours’ drying under good ventilation.
8. Apply the second coat just as thinly.
9. Avoid closing newly finished drawers, cabinets or enclosed components until the finish is properly dry and ventilated.

Drying and Curing

Cleaning and Maintenance

Polyx-Oil Rapid can be cleaned, refreshed and locally renovated without automatically sanding the entire floor.

Vacuum or sweep before damp cleaning. Use a well-wrung mop and avoid flooding or saturating the timber. Wipe up liquid spillages promptly and never allow standing water to remain on the floor.

Renovating a Previously Oiled Surface

1. Vacuum thoroughly to remove loose dirt, grit and debris.
2. Clean the surface using an appropriate Osmo cleaning product.
3. Allow the timber to dry completely before applying maintenance or renovation oil.
4. Inspect the surface for polish residues, contamination, deep scratches or damage requiring local sanding.
5. Lightly abrade or repair damaged areas where necessary and remove all sanding dust.
6. Apply one exceptionally thin coat of the matching Polyx-Oil Rapid finish.
7. Feather local repairs carefully into the surrounding surface.
8. Provide good ventilation and allow the new coat to dry fully before use.

Important Application Notes

• Apply two exceptionally thin coats to new bare timber.
• A correctly prepared previously oiled surface will normally require only one thin renovation coat.
• Do not thin the product.
• Stir thoroughly before and during application.
• Spread the product well within approximately 10–15 minutes and remove visible excess.
• Applying too generously can cause slow drying, tackiness and uneven sheen.
• Poor ventilation will significantly extend the drying and curing time.
• Clear oil enriches and normally darkens the natural colour of wood.
• Test the product on the actual timber before completing the full area.
• Different timber species and sanding grits can produce significantly different results.
• Dark and extractive-rich hardwoods may require Osmo Wood Wax Finish Clear Extra Thin.
• Apply especially thinly to cork and allow additional drying time.
• Apply no more than one exceptionally thin cloth coat to cabinet interiors and drawers.
• Check veneered door and panel manufacturer instructions before applying any oil.
• Avoid standard household detergents, steam cleaners and excessive water on an oiled wooden floor.

Tool Cleaning

Clean suitable brushes, rollers and application equipment immediately after use with Osmo Brush Cleaner & Thinner .

Where the same applicator will be reused for the second coat later that day, it may be wrapped or sealed in an airtight bag for a limited period to reduce drying in the fibres. Inspect the applicator before reuse and replace it if the finish has begun to cure.
