Choose Your Finish
| Finish | Approximate Sheen | Recommended Use |
|---|---|---|
| Extra Matt | Approximately 10% | A modern, low-sheen appearance that keeps the floor looking natural while providing maximum Traffic HD protection. |
| Matt | Approximately 20% | A balanced matt finish with additional visual depth and timber definition. |
| Silk Matt | Approximately 40% | A soft satin-style finish that enhances the colour and grain of the timber. |
| Anti-Slip | Approximately 15% | Designed for stairs, public areas and locations where enhanced slip resistance is required. |
Sheen figures are laboratory measurements taken on glass and may appear different on timber. Timber species, primer choice, sanding sequence, application rate and lighting will all influence the final appearance.
Traffic HD or Traffic HD Anti-Slip?
| Product | Best For | Slip Classification |
|---|---|---|
| Bona Traffic HD | High-traffic domestic and commercial timber floors requiring maximum durability and rapid return to use. | Matt and Extra Matt achieve R9 under EN 16165 Annex B. |
| Bona Traffic HD Anti-Slip | Staircases, public spaces and areas where enhanced slip resistance is required. | R10 under DIN 51130 and low slip potential under BS 7976. |
Compatible Bona Primers
| Compatible Primer | Colour Effect | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Bona Classic UX | Medium-light natural colour | A dependable all-round primer for most timber species and flooring projects. |
| Bona Natural Primer | Light, freshly sanded raw wood appearance | Pale natural floors. For the closest untreated appearance, pair Bona Natural Primer with Bona Traffic HD Raw . |
| Bona White | Whitewashed Scandinavian appearance | Oak, ash, pine and other lighter timber species requiring a pale or whitewashed finish. |
| Bona Intense | Medium-rich, warm timber colour | Most wood species, including tropical timber, plank floors and floors over underfloor heating. |

Recommended Application Tools
- Bona SuperCoat Roller Head 250mm – optimised for an even application rate across timber floors.
- Bona 250mm Roller Handle – compatible with the Bona SuperCoat Roller Head.
- Telescopic Extension Pole & Bona Roller Set – a complete application setup for larger flooring areas.
- Bona Mixing Bottle – recommended when mixing smaller quantities to maintain the correct lacquer-to-hardener ratio.
Floor Preparation
- Allow the floor to acclimatise to its normal end-use environment.
- Sand untreated flooring evenly back to clean, bare timber.
- Complete the final sanding sequence consistently across the full area.
- Remove all sanding dust using professional extraction and vacuuming.
- Ensure the surface is dry and free from oil, wax, polish and contamination.
- Allow the lacquer and hardener to reach room temperature before mixing.
- Ideal application conditions are approximately 18–25°C and 30–60% relative humidity. The minimum application temperature is 13°C.
Mixing
- Shake the lacquer container before adding the supplied hardener.
- Add the complete 0.41L hardener to the 4.54L lacquer when mixing the full pack.
- Immediately shake the combined mixture vigorously for approximately 60 seconds.
- Use standard Bona Traffic HD within approximately four hours, or the Anti-Slip version within approximately three hours.
- When mixing smaller quantities, use the Bona Mixing Bottle and follow the measurement divisions on the hardener container.
Application
- Apply evenly using a Bona floor finish roller at approximately 8–10m² per litre.
- Roll alternately across and with the direction of the timber grain.
- Maintain a wet edge and avoid puddles, heavy deposits and dry overlaps.
- Allow approximately 2–3 hours drying before applying the next coat.
- Where required, carry out intermediate abrasion using the Bona Scrad system at P150 grit or finer and remove all dust.
- If the previous coat has dried for longer than 24 hours, intermediate abrasion is mandatory before recoating.
- Do not apply more than two full coats of primer or lacquer in one day, as excessive moisture may cause timber swelling.
- Maintain good ventilation throughout application and drying.
Gap & Surface Preparation
Before applying the primer or lacquer, fill fine joints and minor defects using Bona Mix & Fill Plus . Allow the filler to dry fully, complete the final sanding process and remove all dust before coating.
Cleaning & Maintenance
- For routine cleaning, use the Bona Premium Wood Floor Spray Mop or another pH-neutral cleaner designed for lacquered wood flooring.
- For economical refilling, use Bona Wood Floor Cleaner 4L .
- Avoid steam cleaners, strong household detergents and excessive water.
- Do not damp mop the floor during the first three days after the final coat.
- Do not cover the floor with rugs or protective floor coverings during the first three days.
- Use suitable felt protection beneath furniture and avoid dragging heavy objects across the floor.
Important: Bona Traffic HD must be mixed accurately with its supplied hardener. Once mixed, the polyurethane lacquer has a limited working time and cannot be stored for later use. Light use is possible after approximately six hours and full traffic after around 12 hours, but avoid rugs, heavy objects and damp cleaning for at least three days. Always follow the current Bona Technical Data Sheet and Safety Data Sheet.
