Bona Craft Oil 2K is a professional two-component penetrating wood floor oil that combines rich colour, rapid drying and durable protection in a single application.
Formulated using modified vegetable oils and a separate hardener, it penetrates deeply into the timber rather than forming a conventional surface film. This preserves the natural texture and grain of the wood while creating a highly resistant, low-sheen finish suitable for domestic and commercial wooden floors.
Bona Craft Oil 2K can be used as a complete oil finish on its own, overcoated with Bona Hard Wax Oil for a traditional hardwax-oiled surface, or protected with Bona Traffic HD for increased wear resistance and reduced maintenance.
Available Colours
Ash
A soft pale-grey tone that creates a refined, lightly weathered appearance while retaining the natural timber grain.
Dark Grey
A deeper grey finish for stronger contemporary colour schemes and more dramatic timber floors.
Driftwood
A weathered coastal shade designed to create the character of naturally aged and sun-exposed timber.
Frost
A pale, cool-toned finish that softens the natural timber colour and creates a light Scandinavian appearance.
Sand
A warm, understated natural tone inspired by pale sand and lightly warmed timber.
Always Test the Complete System First
The final appearance will vary according to the timber species, natural colour, grain, sanding sequence, surface texture and application method.
Always complete a representative test area using the full intended finishing system, including any Bona Traffic or Hard Wax Oil topcoats, before treating the complete floor.

Recommended Application Methods
Bona Oil Cloths
Our preferred method for controlled hand application and for removing surplus oil. The highly absorbent cloths help work the product evenly into the timber while reducing the risk of heavy deposits, streaks and sticky residue.
Bona Flat-Bladed Trowel
A professional method for applying an exceptionally thin and controlled coat across open floor areas. The oil must still be buffed into the timber and all surplus material removed afterwards.
Osmo Applicator Set
The hand pad and application fleece provide excellent control on smaller areas, edges and detailed sections. Apply the oil sparingly, work it evenly into the grain and remove any remaining surplus with clean Bona Oil Cloths.
Short-Haired Microfibre Roller
A short-haired microfibre roller can be used to distribute the oil quickly across larger open areas. The roller is used to spread the product only; it must not be left as the finished application.
After the timber has absorbed the oil, work the surface with the correct pad and remove every trace of surplus oil using clean cloths.
Less Is More
Bona Craft Oil 2K is a penetrating oil rather than a film-forming coating. Applying too much product or failing to remove all surplus oil can result in slow drying, sticky areas, uneven colour and adhesion problems beneath subsequent topcoats.
Whatever application tool is used, the finished surface must not be left wet or loaded with excess product.
Machine Application and Buffing
For larger floor areas, Craft Oil 2K can be worked into the timber using a rotary floor buffer.
- Apply a thin and even coat using a cloth, flat-bladed trowel, short-haired roller or another approved application method.
- Allow the timber to absorb the oil for approximately 15–30 minutes.
- Buff the surface using a machine fitted with a red or beige pad.
- Apply a small additional amount only to areas that remain visibly dry or highly absorbent.
- Allow a further 15–30 minutes of contact time.
- Fit clean Bona Oil Cloths beneath the buffing machine and remove all surplus oil.
- Complete the final buff using a Bona Wool Pad to create a smooth and consistent surface.
Hand Application with a White Pad
A white hand pad can be useful for working Craft Oil 2K into smaller areas, edges and corners where a rotary machine cannot reach.
Use the pad to distribute and work the oil evenly into the grain, then remove all surplus product with clean Bona Oil Cloths. The pad does not replace the final excess-oil removal stage.
Overcoating with Bona Traffic
Bona Craft Oil 2K may be overcoated with two coats of Bona Traffic HD or Bona Traffic GO to increase overall wear resistance, reduce maintenance and help preserve coloured finishes in heavily used areas.
- Apply one controlled coat of Bona Craft Oil 2K and remove all surplus oil thoroughly.
- Allow neutral oil to dry for at least 8 hours or coloured oil for at least 12 hours under normal conditions.
- Test the surface using a clean cotton or paper cloth.
- If noticeable pigment transfers onto the cloth, allow additional drying time.
- Once completely dry, buff the surface using a red pad.
- Vacuum the floor thoroughly to remove all residue.
- Apply two coats of Bona Traffic HD, Traffic GO or the selected approved Traffic-family lacquer using a suitable lacquer roller.
- Where required, carry out a gentle intermediate abrasion using a Bona Scrad Pad before the final lacquer coat.
Traffic Overcoating Conditions
- Craft Oil 2K must be used on its own without Bona Rich Tone or other additives when it will be overcoated with Traffic.
- Every trace of surplus oil must be removed before drying.
- The surface must be completely dry before red-pad buffing.
- Do not proceed while pigment transfers noticeably to a clean cloth.
- Only light foot traffic should be permitted during the first 72 hours.
- Wait at least one week before covering the floor with rugs or mats.
Traffic HD or Traffic HD Raw?
Choose Bona Traffic HD when maximum commercial durability, chemical resistance and rapid return to use are the main priorities.
Choose Bona Traffic HD Raw when you want a very low-sheen, natural-looking lacquered surface over the coloured oil.
Both systems can alter the final depth, sheen and appearance of the colour, so always test the complete system first.
Overcoating with Bona Hard Wax Oil
Bona Craft Oil 2K can also be used as the coloured base beneath Bona Hard Wax Oil. This creates a traditional hardwax-oiled finish while retaining the selected Craft Oil colour beneath the protective surface coats.
- Apply one coat of Bona Craft Oil 2K and remove all surplus material.
- Allow coloured Craft Oil to dry for at least 12 hours under normal conditions.
- Rub the surface with a clean cotton or paper cloth to confirm that it is fully dry.
- If pigment transfers noticeably, allow additional drying time.
- Buff the completely dry surface using a red pad.
- Vacuum the floor thoroughly.
- Apply two thin coats of Bona Hard Wax Oil.
- Carry out a gentle intermediate abrasion between coats where required for the best surface finish.

Floor Preparation
The final appearance of a coloured penetrating oil is highly dependent on the quality and consistency of the sanding process.
- Allow the floor to acclimatise to its normal end-use environment.
- Sand the complete floor evenly back to clean, bare timber.
- Use the same final sanding sequence across the entire area.
- Remove all sanding dust, wax, polish and contamination.
- Fill suitable fine gaps before the final sanding stage using Bona Mix & Fill Plus or Bona Mix & Fill.
- Do not allow oil to drain freely into open, unfilled joints.
- Bring the oil and hardener to room temperature before use.
- Apply only when the floor temperature is at least 16°C.
- Optimal application conditions are approximately 20–25°C and 30–50% relative humidity.
How to Apply Bona Craft Oil 2K
1. Mix the Two Components
Release the hardener from the upper container into the oil and allow it to drain fully. Remove the upper container and mix the contents thoroughly until completely uniform.
2. Apply a Thin Coat
Apply and distribute a thin, even coat using the selected method. Work in manageable sections and overlap wet-on-wet.
3. Allow the Timber to Absorb the Oil
Allow approximately 15–30 minutes for the timber to absorb the oil.
4. Work the Oil into the Timber
Buff the surface with a red or beige machine pad, or work smaller areas manually using an appropriate white pad or application cloth.
5. Saturate Dry Areas Only
Apply a small additional amount only to areas that remain visibly dry or highly absorbent.
6. Remove All Surplus Oil
After a further 15–30 minutes, remove every trace of surplus oil using clean Bona Oil Cloths, either manually or fitted beneath a buffing machine.
7. Complete the Final Buff
Buff the complete floor using a Bona Wool Pad to produce a smooth, dry and consistent finish.
8. Allow to Dry
Allow coloured Craft Oil 2K to dry for at least 12 hours under normal conditions before light use or before proceeding with an approved Bona topcoat system.

- Immediately place used cloths, paper, pads and rags in water or store them inside a sealed metal container.
- Never leave oil-soaked cloths folded, piled together or inside an open waste container.
- Wear suitable gloves, eye protection and disposable shoe covers during application.
- Ensure good ventilation throughout application and drying.
- Component B contains an isocyanate hardener; read the current Safety Data Sheet before use.
- Do not over-apply the oil or leave wet material on the timber surface.
- Always test the colour and complete finishing system before starting the full floor.
Maintenance
Floors finished solely with Bona Craft Oil 2K should be cleaned using a vacuum or Bona microfibre dusting pad, followed where necessary by a suitable cleaner for oiled wooden floors.
Maintain an oil-only surface using Bona Oil Care as required. Maintenance frequency will depend on the level of traffic and may range from approximately every three years in light domestic use to several treatments per year in demanding commercial environments.
Where Craft Oil 2K has been overcoated with Bona Traffic HD or another approved Traffic-family lacquer, maintain the floor as a lacquered surface rather than an oil-only floor.
