SAIT Floor Buffing Pads 407mm (16") are professional non-woven floor maintenance pads supplied in packs of 5 for use with standard 16-inch rotary floor buffers.

Available in White, Red, Green and Black, each colour has a different level of aggressiveness and is intended for specific polishing, cleaning, maintenance or floor preparation tasks.

Choosing the correct pad is important. Using a pad that is more aggressive than required can dull, scratch or remove an existing floor finish, so always start with the least aggressive pad suitable for the work.

Choosing the Correct Pad Colour

Colour Recommended Uses
White – BN Polishing, oil application, dry buffing and sanding-screen backing.

The least aggressive pad in the range. SAIT specifies the White pad for polishing, dry use and supporting sanding screens during floor sanding and finishing.

In professional wood-floor finishing, we also find White pads particularly useful for working thin applications of oils and maintenance products evenly across the timber, including Bona Craft Oil 2K and Osmo Maintenance Oil.

It can also be used as a backing pad with Bona 407mm Sanding Screens or SAIT 407mm Sanding Screens.
Red – RS Regular maintenance, light cleaning, buffing and surface preparation.

SAIT recommends the Red pad for regular maintenance and removing light scratches, marks and imperfections. It can be used dry or with suitable low-detergent maintenance products.

The Red pad is also particularly important within the Bona Craft Oil 2K system. Once the Craft Oil is fully dry, Bona specifies buffing with a Red pad and vacuuming thoroughly before applying Bona Traffic HD or Bona Traffic HD Raw.
Green – VR Periodic cleaning, surface wax removal and floor maintenance.

More aggressive than the Red pad, SAIT specifies Green for removing surface layers of wax, normally using a minimal amount of water and a suitable dewaxing product.

For professional oil maintenance work, the Green pad can also be used as a support pad with Bona Oil Cloths wrapped securely around it. This provides a useful machine-assisted method for applying or removing very small quantities of oil, laying off compatible finishes and carrying out final buffing.

It can be particularly useful when working with Osmo Maintenance Oil, where exceptionally thin application and complete removal of surplus product are important.
Black – NR Heavy-duty cleaning and complete wax removal.

The most aggressive pad in the range. SAIT specifies the Black pad for deep cleaning and complete removal of wax layers, normally used wet with a suitable detergent and water.

This pad should only be selected where aggressive cleaning or stripping is genuinely required, as it may damage or remove existing floor finishes.

Pad Aggressiveness

  • White: least aggressive – polishing and finishing.
  • Red: light maintenance and preparation.
  • Green: more aggressive periodic cleaning and surface wax removal.
  • Black: most aggressive – deep cleaning and stripping.

Professional Flooring Advice

Always use the least aggressive pad capable of completing the required work. The pad colour should be selected according to the existing floor finish and the task being carried out rather than simply choosing the fastest-cutting option.

For oil application and maintenance, use very small quantities of product and work them evenly across the surface. Any surplus oil should be removed thoroughly rather than being left as a heavy surface film.

Bona Oil Cloths measure 50 x 60cm and can be wrapped around a 16-inch drive pad for machine-assisted oil application, removal and buffing.

Bona Craft Oil 2K & Traffic System

When using Bona Craft Oil 2K beneath a Bona Traffic lacquer, it is particularly important to remove all surplus oil and allow the surface to dry completely.

Before Applying Bona Traffic

  • Allow coloured Bona Craft Oil 2K to dry for at least 12 hours under normal conditions, and longer where required.
  • Rub the surface with a clean cotton or paper cloth to check for pigment transfer.
  • If significant pigment transfers to the cloth, allow additional drying time.
  • Once completely dry, buff the floor evenly with a Red pad.
  • Vacuum the complete floor thoroughly.
  • Then apply two coats of Bona Traffic HD or the appropriate compatible Bona Traffic system.

Using Sanding Screens

The White SAIT pad can be used beneath a 407mm sanding screen to help keep the screen correctly supported while working with a rotary floor buffer.

Important Information

  • Pad colours represent different levels of aggressiveness and intended applications.
  • Using a pad that is too aggressive may permanently alter or remove an existing floor finish.
  • Always test cleaning, maintenance or stripping procedures on a small inconspicuous area first.
  • Ensure pads are centred correctly on the drive plate before operating the machine.
  • Replace heavily worn or contaminated pads to maintain consistent results.
  • When using oils, follow the product manufacturer's application and fire-safety instructions.

Pad suitability will depend on the floor finish, maintenance product, machine and site conditions. The practical oil-application methods described above reflect professional wood-floor finishing techniques; always follow the current coating manufacturer's technical instructions for the specific finishing system being used.
