Osmo Polyx-Oil Effect Raw 3044 is a lightly white-pigmented matt hardwax oil designed to protect pale interior timber while preserving the appearance of freshly sanded, untreated wood.

Unlike conventional clear oils, which normally enrich and darken timber, Polyx-Oil Effect Raw uses carefully balanced white pigments to counteract the usual permanent wet-look effect. This keeps oak and other light-coloured woods looking lighter, calmer and much closer to their natural raw appearance.

Once correctly applied, the finish is extremely durable, water-repellent, dirt-resistant and resistant to common household spillages. It remains microporous and breathable and will not crack, peel, blister or flake.

Wiltshire Wood Recommendation:
Choose Polyx-Oil Effect Raw when you want the protection of an Osmo hardwax oil without significantly warming or darkening pale oak and other light timber.

Consistent application is particularly important because Raw contains white pigment. Apply exceptionally thin coats, work methodically and lay the finish off evenly with an Osmo Floor Brush . Never leave heavy areas or visible white pigment to dry on the surface.

Nearly Invisible Protection for Pale Wood

Clear oils normally make timber look darker and richer, similar to the appearance of wood when it is damp. This is commonly known as the permanent wet-look effect.

Polyx-Oil Effect Raw 3044 contains a controlled amount of white pigment designed to neutralise this colour change. The pigment is not intended to create an obviously white floor; it helps pale timber retain the light, natural appearance it had immediately after sanding.

Thin and Consistent Application Is Essential: Applying Raw too heavily can leave white, cloudy or chalky patches. It is always better to apply multiple exceptionally thin, even coats than one heavy coat. Remove or redistribute visible white pigment before allowing the finish to dry.

Why Choose Osmo Polyx-Oil Effect Raw?

  • Nearly invisible protection for light-coloured interior wood
  • Helps pale timber remain pale after oiling
  • Reduces the usual amber or wet-look effect of clear oils
  • Creates a natural, freshly sanded appearance
  • Matt finish with minimal visible sheen
  • Extremely durable and hardwearing
  • Very water-repellent and dirt-resistant
  • Resistant to common household liquid spillages
  • Suitable for wooden floors, furniture and interior joinery
  • Suitable for solid, engineered and parquet flooring
  • Microporous and breathable finish
  • Will not crack, blister, peel or flake
  • Can be repaired or refreshed locally
  • Saliva-resistant and sweatproof once dry
  • Suitable for children’s toys in accordance with EN 71.3
  • Easy to clean and maintain with the Osmo care system

Which Osmo Oil Is Right for Me?

Osmo Finish Best For Key Difference
Osmo Polyx-Oil Original Floors, furniture, staircases and general interior timber where a traditional oiled appearance is wanted. Clear oil that enriches and warms the natural colour of timber.
Osmo Polyx-Oil Rapid Floors and furniture where the coating programme needs to be completed more quickly. Fast-drying clear protection, allowing two coats in one day under suitable conditions.
Osmo Polyx-Oil Tints Adding a visible transparent colour while retaining the timber grain. Available in White, Light Grey, Honey, Amber, Terra, Graphite and Black.
Polyx-Oil Effect Raw 3044 Pale oak and other light-coloured woods where a freshly sanded, untreated appearance is required. Contains subtle white pigment to counteract the usual darkening caused by clear oil.
Osmo Door-Oil Interior wooden doors, including suitable solid and veneered door constructions. Purpose-designed finish for internal doors.
Osmo TopOil Kitchen worktops, tables, desks, shelving and wooden furniture. Food-safe and highly water-repellent protection for work surfaces.

Polyx-Oil Effect Raw vs Polyx-Oil Original

Feature Effect Raw 3044 Polyx-Oil Original
Colour change Helps minimise warming and darkening. Enriches and deepens the natural timber colour.
Appearance Pale, raw and close to freshly sanded wood. Traditional warm, naturally oiled appearance.
Pigmentation Contains carefully balanced white pigment. Clear matt or clear satin finish.
Best suited to Pale oak, ash, maple, birch, pine and similar light woods. Most suitable absorbent interior timber where natural enrichment is wanted.
Application difficulty Requires particularly thin and consistent application. More forgiving where minor colour enrichment is acceptable.

Which Appearance Do You Prefer?
Choose Polyx-Oil Effect Raw if you want pale timber to remain close to its freshly sanded colour. Choose Polyx-Oil Original if you prefer warmer oak tones and a more traditional oiled appearance.

Using Raw 3044 over Polyx-Oil Tints 3040 White

Clear oils can warm a pale or white-tinted floor and may introduce a slightly yellow tone. Where a floor has received Polyx-Oil Tints 3040 White , Polyx-Oil Effect Raw can sometimes be used as the protective topcoat to help maintain a lighter appearance.

Always Complete a Full System Test: The white pigment in the tint and the white pigment in Raw can build together. Apply both products on a representative test area using the intended sanding, application tools and number of coats. Only proceed when you are happy with the dried colour and overall pigment level.

On flooring, apply the white tint exceptionally thinly and allow it to dry completely. Apply Raw 3044 equally thinly over the top, keeping the application consistent and removing any visible excess pigment before drying.

Suitable Timber

Timber Suitability Expected Result
European oak Highly suitable Helps maintain a pale, freshly sanded oak appearance.
Ash Highly suitable Preserves the naturally light colour and visible grain.
Maple Suitable subject to testing Helps minimise warming on clean, evenly sanded timber.
Birch Suitable subject to testing Maintains a pale appearance, although absorption can vary.
Pine and spruce Suitable subject to testing Reduces yellowing, but white pigment may emphasise knots and grain.
Smoked or fumed oak Generally unsuitable White pigment may appear misty, cloudy or chalky.
Walnut and dark hardwoods Generally unsuitable White pigment is likely to remain visibly pale on the surface.
Wenge, Merbau and Jatoba Alternative system recommended Extractives and dark colour can interfere with appearance and drying.

Timber varies naturally. Always complete a representative trial on the actual wood before treating the full area.

Suitable Surfaces

  • Light-coloured solid wood flooring
  • Engineered flooring with a suitable absorbent timber wear layer
  • Oak plank flooring
  • Parquet and herringbone flooring
  • Pale wooden furniture
  • Tables, desks and shelving
  • Solid timber staircases
  • Stair treads and risers
  • Handrails, newel posts and spindles
  • Skirting boards and architraves
  • Wall and ceiling panelling
  • Suitable interior doors and joinery
  • Previously treated Raw surfaces following suitable preparation

Interior Use Only: Polyx-Oil Effect Raw is intended for suitable untreated or sanded interior timber. It is not an exterior decking, cladding or garden-furniture finish.

Textured and Brushed Timber

White pigment naturally settles into open grain, deep texture, brushing, saw marks and sanding scratches. Raw 3044 can therefore appear visibly whiter on textured timber than it does on smoothly and consistently sanded wood.

Surface Texture Possible Effect Recommendation
Smoothly sanded flooring Most even and nearly invisible appearance. Apply exceptionally thinly and lay off consistently.
Wire-brushed oak White pigment may remain more visible in the open grain. Trial the complete system before application.
Band-sawn or heavily textured timber Pigment may collect in deeper marks and create a stronger white effect. Apply very sparingly and test on a representative section.
Coarsely sanded timber Sanding scratches may become highlighted by white pigment. Complete a consistent final sanding sequence before coating.

Recommended Application Tools

Application Tool Best For How It Is Used
Osmo Floor Brush Controlled application and final laying-off across wooden floors. Apply with the grain and stretch the product into a very thin, consistent layer. Use the brush to remove heavy marks and visible pigment.
Osmo Microfibre Roller Applying the product efficiently across larger open floor areas. Roller the product on exceptionally thinly, then lay it off with the Osmo Floor Brush for a more consistent finish.
Hand Pad Holder and White Pad Buffing Raw thinly into smaller surfaces or controlling pigment. Work the product evenly into the timber with a white pad and remove all excess. Effective but labour-intensive on larger floors.
Wood Coating Brushes Edges, staircases, furniture, skirting and detailed joinery. Choose an appropriate brush width and apply sparingly, checking mouldings and corners for white pigment build-up.

Our Preferred Floor Method:
For many floor areas, apply Raw using a suitable microfibre roller, then immediately lay the finish off along the grain with an Osmo Floor Brush . This combines efficient application with the control needed to distribute the white pigment evenly.

The finish can also be buffed in with a white pad. This can produce a very controlled, thin application, but it is considerably more labour-intensive over large areas.

Recommended Accessories

Coverage, drying and curing times are approximate. Temperature, humidity, ventilation, timber species, texture and application thickness will affect the result.

Surface Preparation

  • Ensure the timber is clean, dry, frost-free and free from grease, wax, dirt and contamination.
  • Timber moisture content must not exceed approximately 18%.
  • Completely remove paint, varnish, lacquer and other film-forming finishes.
  • Repair or replace loose, damaged or unstable timber before sanding.
  • Countersink protruding nails, pins and other fixings.
  • Fill suitable cracks, holes and defects before completing the final sanding sequence.
  • Sand the complete surface consistently back to clean, absorbent timber.
  • For flooring, normally complete the final sanding at approximately P120–P150, subject to timber species and the required appearance.
  • For furniture and fine joinery, a finer final sanding sequence may be suitable.
  • Avoid leaving coarse sanding scratches that may be highlighted by the white pigment.
  • Vacuum thoroughly, including floor joints, edges, corners and mouldings.
  • Stir the product thoroughly from the bottom of the tin before and during application.
  • Complete a representative trial application before treating the full surface.

Consistent Sanding Is Critical: Variations in sanding grit or surface texture will affect pigment absorption. Coarser areas may appear noticeably whiter, while highly polished sections may absorb less product.

Floor Application

  1. Bring the product to normal room temperature and stir thoroughly. Do not thin.
  2. Ensure the floor is completely clean, dry and free from sanding dust.
  3. Cut in around edges, corners, door frames and thresholds using a suitable brush.
  4. Apply the first coat exceptionally thinly using an Osmo Floor Brush or a suitable microfibre roller.
  5. Where using a roller, lay the product off immediately along the grain with the Osmo Floor Brush.
  6. Work methodically in manageable sections and maintain a wet edge.
  7. Stretch the product thoroughly and avoid heavy overlaps, roller edges, puddles or thick brush marks.
  8. Check the surface from several angles while wet.
  9. Remove or redistribute any visible white pigment before allowing the finish to dry.
  10. Any brush marks can be gently laid off with a clean, dry microfibre roller while the product remains workable.
  11. Allow the first coat to dry for approximately 24 hours with good ventilation.
  12. Once fully dry, apply a second exceptionally thin and consistent coat.
  13. Continue ventilating throughout drying and curing.
  14. Avoid rugs, mats and protective coverings during the curing period.

Professional Application Tip:
Do not try to achieve the complete protective build with one heavy coat. Thin, controlled coats produce a much cleaner and more consistent result. Heavy application increases the likelihood of white patches, cloudy areas and slow drying.

Buffing Application with a White Pad

  1. Apply a small quantity of Raw to the prepared timber.
  2. Work it evenly into the surface using a clean white pad.
  3. Continue buffing until the product is distributed into an extremely thin and consistent film.
  4. Remove all visible excess and pigment build-up.
  5. Work section by section and blend adjoining areas carefully.
  6. Allow approximately 24 hours’ drying before applying the next coat.

White-pad application provides excellent control but can be labour-intensive over larger floor areas. A roller followed by laying off with the Osmo Floor Brush is often more practical for a full room.

Applying to Stairs, Furniture and Joinery

  1. Prepare and sand the timber evenly, then remove all dust.
  2. Stir thoroughly to distribute the white pigment.
  3. Select a suitable brush or white-pad applicator for the component.
  4. Apply exceptionally thinly with the grain.
  5. Take particular care around mouldings, joints, corners and end grain, where pigment may collect.
  6. Check vertical surfaces for runs and white deposits.
  7. Remove or redistribute visible excess immediately.
  8. Allow approximately 24 hours’ drying with good ventilation.
  9. Apply the second coat equally thinly.
  10. Apply no more than one exceptionally thin cloth coat inside cabinets and drawers.

Drying and Curing

Stage Approximate Time Guidance
Between coats Approximately 24 hours The first coat must be fully dry before applying the second. Maintain good ventilation.
Light use Once the final coat has dried Keep traffic light and avoid spillages, wet cleaning and excessive abrasion.
Full cure Approximately 2–3 weeks Avoid rugs, mats, protective sheeting and wet cleaning during this period.

Do Not Cover While Curing: Osmo oils cure through oxidation and require airflow. Covering the surface can delay curing and may cause visible colour or sheen differences.

Cleaning and Maintenance

A correctly applied Raw surface can be routinely cleaned, refreshed and locally renovated without automatically sanding the entire floor.

Maintenance Stage Recommended Product Purpose
Regular dry cleaning Vacuum cleaner, soft broom or Osmo Dust Mop Removes grit, dust and debris that could scratch or dull the finish.
Routine damp cleaning Osmo Wash & Care Routine cleaning of oiled and waxed timber without aggressive household detergents.
Complete maintenance kit Osmo Floor Maintenance Kit Suitable cleaning and care products for maintaining an Osmo-treated floor.
Periodic refreshing Osmo Maintenance Oil 3079 Clear Matt Refreshes protection where the pale colour and Raw appearance remain intact.
Intensive cleaning Osmo Intensive Cleaner Removes heavier contamination before suitable maintenance or renovation.

Vacuum or sweep before damp cleaning. Use a well-wrung mop and avoid flooding the timber. Wipe up liquid spillages promptly and never allow standing water to remain on the surface.

Renovating a Raw-Finished Surface

  1. Vacuum thoroughly to remove grit, dust and loose debris.
  2. Clean the surface using a suitable Osmo cleaning product.
  3. Allow the timber to dry completely.
  4. Inspect whether the timber remains pale and evenly protected.
  5. Where the appearance remains consistent but water repellency has reduced, apply Osmo Maintenance Oil 3079 Clear Matt exceptionally thinly.
  6. Where slight wear is visible, clean and prepare the surface before applying one thin coat of Raw 3044.
  7. Do not apply Raw directly over dirty, bare timber, as contaminated timber may absorb oil differently and become noticeably darker.
  8. Feather local repairs carefully into the surrounding surface.
  9. Always trial the repair method before treating a prominent area.

Local Repair Advice:
Raw finishes can be repaired locally, but colour matching requires care. Timber exposed through wear may have become dirty, aged or affected by sunlight. Clean and test the area before recoating to avoid a darker or whiter repair patch.

Important Application Notes

  • Use on suitable pale interior timber only.
  • Stir thoroughly before and throughout application.
  • Do not thin the product.
  • Apply two exceptionally thin coats to new bare timber.
  • Apply fewer heavy coats only at the risk of white patches, cloudy areas and delayed drying.
  • Remove or redistribute all visible white pigment before allowing the surface to dry.
  • Lay the coating off consistently along the timber grain.
  • A suitable roller can be used for application before laying off with the Osmo Floor Brush.
  • White-pad application provides good control but is slow on large areas.
  • Coarse, wire-brushed and textured surfaces may appear more visibly white.
  • Consistent sanding is essential for an even colour and pigment level.
  • Raw is not suitable for dark, reddish, smoked or fumed timber without a successful trial application.
  • Extractive-rich hardwoods may require Osmo Wood Wax Finish Clear Extra Thin.
  • Poor ventilation and excessive application will delay drying.
  • Apply no more than one exceptionally thin cloth coat inside cabinets and drawers.
  • Always trial the complete system when applying Raw over 3040 White.
  • Avoid general household detergents, washing-up liquid, steam cleaners and excessive water.

Tool Cleaning

Clean suitable brushes, rollers and application equipment immediately after use with Osmo Brush Cleaner & Thinner .

Do not reuse applicators containing darker or strongly pigmented products unless they have been cleaned thoroughly, as residual pigment may affect the final Raw appearance.

Oil-Soaked Cloth Safety: Cloths, pads and absorbent materials contaminated with drying oils can generate heat while curing. Lay them flat outdoors to dry safely or store them in an appropriate sealed metal container before disposal in accordance with the product safety information.
