Osmo Garden Furniture Oil 028 Clear Satin is a clear, natural oil-based exterior wood finish developed to protect, maintain and enhance wooden garden furniture.
Particularly suited to teak and other suitable hardwoods, it penetrates deeply into the timber while creating a highly water-repellent, dirt-resistant and weather-resistant surface. The microporous finish allows the wood to breathe naturally, helping to reduce swelling and shrinkage without forming a brittle coating that cracks, peels, flakes or blisters.
Garden Furniture Oil leaves the natural grain and colour of the timber visible with a clear satin appearance. It is straightforward to maintain, and worn surfaces can normally be cleaned and recoated without completely sanding or priming the furniture.
Wiltshire Wood Recommendation:
Choose Osmo Garden Furniture Oil when you want a simple, clear and
highly water-repellent finish for teak, oak and other suitable outdoor
furniture while retaining the natural character of the wood.
Apply two exceptionally thin coats with an Osmo Flat Brush or lint-free cloth. Work with the grain and remove all heavy or wet-looking areas before drying. Thin coats dry more reliably and are much easier to maintain than one heavy application.
Clear Protection for Wooden Garden Furniture
Exterior wooden furniture is regularly exposed to rain, dirt, sunlight, food, drink and changing temperatures. Osmo Garden Furniture Oil penetrates into the timber and helps replace oils lost through weathering while maintaining a natural-looking surface.
Because the finish remains microporous, moisture vapour can continue to move through the timber. This helps reduce excessive swelling and shrinkage and avoids the cracking and peeling associated with many film-forming exterior coatings.
Clear Oil Does Not Prevent Natural Greying: Garden Furniture Oil contains no coloured UV-protective pigment. Furniture exposed to sunlight will therefore gradually weather and develop a grey patina. The oil protects against moisture and dirt but does not stop the natural greying process.
Why Choose Osmo Garden Furniture Oil?

- Particularly suitable for teak and other hardwoods
- Suitable for selected softwoods following correct preparation
- Clear satin finish keeps the natural wood grain visible

Garden Furniture Oil vs Clear Decking Oil
| Feature | Garden Furniture Oil | Decking Oil 007 Teak Clear |
|---|---|---|
| Primary use | Garden furniture and similar exterior wood surfaces. | Decking, garden furniture and horizontal exterior timber. |
| Appearance | Clear satin. | Clear satin. |
| UV pigmentation | None. | None. |
| Natural greying | Timber will naturally grey over time. | Timber will naturally grey over time. |
| Best choice when | Treating tables, chairs, benches and furniture components. | Treating decking or combining decking and garden furniture in one clear system. |
Want to Slow Natural Greying?
Choose a suitable pigmented
Osmo Decking Oil
instead. Transparent colour pigments offer greater UV resistance than a
completely clear furniture oil while still keeping the timber grain
visible.
Suitable Furniture and Surfaces
- Wooden garden tables
- Exterior dining chairs
- Garden benches
- Teak furniture
- Hardwood loungers
- Wooden stools
- Outdoor coffee tables
- Garden furniture frames
- Wooden armrests and seat components
- Suitable exterior storage benches
- Covered outdoor furniture
- Selected exterior timber panels and components
- Previously Garden Furniture Oil-treated timber
Not the Best Choice for Every Exterior Surface: Use a dedicated Decking Oil for horizontal decking and a UV-Protection Oil system for vertical cladding, windows and doors where stronger UV resistance is required.
Suitable Timber Species
| Timber | Suitability | Preparation Guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Oak, beech, ash, alder and birch | Recommended | Ensure the timber is clean, dry, absorbent and below approximately 20% moisture. |
| Teak | Recommended after weathering | Allow new teak to weather for approximately 12 weeks or degrease thoroughly before coating. |
| Thermowood and thermally modified timber | Suitable | These timbers may grey quickly, so early protection is normally beneficial. |
| Pine and spruce | Suitable with additional preparation | Consider Osmo WR Base Coat where additional protection against blue stain, rot and insects is required. |
| Accoya and Kebony | Suitable subject to testing | WR Base Coat may be recommended before the finishing oil. |
| Douglas fir and larch | Suitable after approximately 6 weeks’ weathering | Weathering allows natural resin and extractives to reduce. |
| Cedar, iroko, mahogany and Merbau | Suitable after weathering | Allow up to approximately 12 weeks before initial treatment and trial the application carefully. |
| Ipe and tropical walnut | Suitable after weathering | Allow approximately 6–8 weeks and consider degreasing before coating. |
| Bangkirai, Balau, Garapa and Massaranduba | Suitable after approximately 12 weeks | Allow natural oils, extractives and excess moisture to disperse before treatment. |
| Green oak | Not suitable while wet | Do not coat until timber moisture is below approximately 20%. |
| Previously varnished furniture | Requires complete coating removal | Sand back to clean, evenly absorbent timber before applying oil. |
Natural oils, resin, extractives and previous treatments can affect absorption and drying. Always complete a representative test before treating the complete item.
New Hardwood Furniture May Need to Weather First
New teak and many tropical hardwoods contain natural oils and extractives that can prevent Garden Furniture Oil from penetrating and drying correctly. Allowing the furniture to weather outside helps reduce these surface ingredients and improves absorption.
| Timber Condition | Typical Waiting Period | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| High-extractive timber | At least approximately 4 weeks | Allows natural oils and extractives to reduce. |
| Douglas fir and larch | At least approximately 6 weeks | Allows surface resin to weather and improves absorption. |
| Teak, cedar, iroko and Merbau | Approximately 12 weeks | Allows ingredient-rich timber to become more absorbent. |
| Pressure-treated timber | Approximately 12 weeks or until fully dry | Allows treatment moisture and salts to reduce. |
| Recently sanded oily hardwood | Weather or degrease before application | Sanding may expose fresh oils that interfere with the coating. |
Alternative to Weathering:
Some oily timbers can be carefully degreased using
Osmo Brush Cleaner & Thinner
.
Always complete a test to confirm that the surface accepts the oil and
dries properly.
Cleaning or Reviving Existing Garden Furniture
| Furniture Condition | Recommended Product | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| General dirt and outdoor contamination | Osmo Decking Cleaner | Routine cleaning before maintenance or recoating. |
| Greyed and weathered timber | Osmo Wood Reviver Power-Gel | Removes the grey weathered patina and reveals more of the original timber colour. |
| Greyed timber requiring scrubbing | Osmo Decking Cleaning Scrub Brush | Works cleaner or Reviver Gel into the grain and textured areas. |
| Green growth or organic contamination | Osmo Gard Clean | Treats algae and green surface contamination before refinishing. |
| Clean but lightly worn oil finish | Matching Garden Furniture Oil | Normally requires one thin maintenance coat. |
Greyed Timber Must Be Revived First: Applying clear oil directly over grey timber will normally deepen the grey colour rather than restore the original warmth. Use Wood Reviver Power-Gel before recoating where the timber has weathered.
Recommended Application Tools
| Application Tool | Best For | How It Is Used |
|---|---|---|
| Osmo Flat Brush | Tabletops, seats, chair frames, benches and larger furniture components. | Apply thinly with the grain and stretch the oil thoroughly into a consistent film. |
| Lint-Free Cloth | Slats, detailed furniture components and exceptionally thin second coats. | Apply a small amount and work it firmly into the timber, removing all visible excess. |
| Applicator Fleece or White Pad | Flat furniture panels, buffing and controlled maintenance coats. | Work the oil evenly into the surface and leave no wet residue. |
| Wood Coating Brushes | Narrow slats, joints, legs, armrests and detailed furniture. | Choose a suitable brush width and check joints and corners for pooled oil. |
Our Preferred Furniture Method:
Apply the first coat thinly with an
Osmo Flat Brush
.
Once dry, apply the second coat equally thinly with the Flat Brush,
applicator fleece or lint-free cloth.
Pay particular attention to slats, joints, end grain and the underside of arms and seats, where excess oil can collect and remain sticky.

Coverage and drying times are approximate. Timber species, texture, preparation, temperature, humidity, airflow and application thickness will affect the result.
Best Conditions for Application
- Apply to clean, dry and frost-free timber.
- Timber moisture content must not exceed approximately 20%.
- Choose a dry weather window with no rain expected during drying.
- Avoid coating furniture that is hot from direct sunlight.
- Do not apply during frost, heavy dew or very high humidity.
- Work in a clean, sheltered and well-ventilated area where possible.
- Allow each coat to dry completely before recoating.
- Keep furniture protected from rain while drying.
Allow Good Airflow: Low temperatures, high humidity, restricted ventilation and heavy application can extend the drying time considerably.
Surface Preparation
- Remove cushions, fixings and detachable components where practical.
- Brush away loose dirt, dust, leaves and debris.
- Clean dirty furniture with Osmo Decking Cleaner .
- Treat greyed timber with Osmo Wood Reviver Power-Gel .
- Rinse cleaning products as directed and allow the furniture to dry completely.
- Confirm timber moisture is below approximately 20%.
- Allow new oily or resinous timber to weather for the appropriate period.
- Clean or lightly sand sound old microporous oil finishes.
- Completely remove paint, varnish and incompatible film-forming finishes.
- Repair loose joints, splits or structurally damaged components before coating.
- Remove all sanding dust.
- Stir the Garden Furniture Oil thoroughly before and during application.
- Complete a representative trial application before treating the entire item.
Protect All Sides Where Practical: On new or disassembled furniture, apply the first coat to faces, edges, end grain and concealed surfaces before assembly wherever practical. This creates more balanced protection around the timber.
How to Apply Osmo Garden Furniture Oil
- Confirm that the furniture is clean, completely dry and ready to accept oil.
- Stir the product thoroughly. Do not thin.
- Apply the first coat exceptionally thinly using an Osmo Flat Brush or lint-free cloth.
- Work with the wood grain and spread the oil thoroughly.
- Complete individual slats or components from end to end where possible.
- Check joints, corners, undersides and end grain for heavy deposits.
- Redistribute or remove all visible excess.
- Allow approximately 12 hours’ drying with good ventilation.
- Once the first coat is fully dry, apply a second equally thin coat.
- Protect the furniture from rain, dew, dust and handling while drying.
- Allow the finish to cure fully before prolonged or demanding use.
Professional Application Tip:
Thin coats are essential. Heavy application can leave furniture sticky,
increase drying time and create an uneven satin sheen. Two controlled
coats will always produce a better result than one heavy coat.
Applying with a Lint-Free Cloth
- Place a small quantity of oil onto the cloth rather than pouring it directly onto the furniture.
- Work it firmly into the timber along the grain.
- Spread the oil over as much surface as possible.
- Use a clean section of cloth to remove all wet-looking residue.
- Take particular care around slats, joints and end grain.
- Allow the coat to dry fully before repeating the process.
Drying and Use
| Stage | Approximate Time | Guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Between coats | Approximately 12 hours | The first coat must be fully dry before applying the second. |
| Careful use | Once the final coat is properly dry | Avoid standing water, abrasion and prolonged covering. |
| Full cure | Approximately 2–3 weeks | Use carefully and avoid harsh cleaning while the finish cures. |
Do Not Cover While Curing: Drying oils require airflow. Avoid leaving waterproof furniture covers tightly against the freshly treated timber until the finish has dried and cured sufficiently.
Cleaning and Routine Care
- Brush off loose dust, leaves and debris regularly.
- Damp clean with Osmo Decking Cleaner following the product instructions.
- Use an Osmo Decking Cleaning Scrub Brush on slats, textured surfaces and stubborn dirt.
- Rinse as directed and allow the furniture to dry thoroughly.
- Remove food, drink and bird-dropping contamination promptly.
- Avoid leaving wet cushions or covers directly against the timber.
- Inspect the finish regularly for dryness, fading and reduced water repellency.
- Apply one thin maintenance coat when signs of wear become visible.
Restoring Greyed Garden Furniture
- Remove cushions, loose dirt and surface debris.
- Wet the timber as directed in the Wood Reviver instructions.
- Apply Osmo Wood Reviver Power-Gel along the wood grain.
- Allow the gel to react for approximately 20 minutes without drying onto the surface.
- Scrub with the Osmo Decking Cleaning Scrub Brush.
- Rinse thoroughly with clean water.
- Allow the furniture to dry for approximately 2–3 days in suitable conditions.
- Confirm the timber moisture is below approximately 20%.
- Apply two thin coats of Garden Furniture Oil.
Cleaner or Reviver?
Use Decking Cleaner for dirt and routine maintenance. Use Wood Reviver
Power-Gel when the timber itself has turned grey through sunlight and
weathering.
When Should Furniture Be Recoated?
- The timber begins to look dry or faded.
- Water no longer beads effectively.
- Frequently touched areas appear lighter.
- The surface becomes rougher or less richly coloured.
- The finish remains intact but protection is visibly reducing.
Maintain Before the Timber Becomes Bare: Timely maintenance normally requires cleaning followed by one thin coat. Waiting until the timber becomes grey, dirty or completely unprotected will require significantly more preparation.
Important Application Notes
- Use on suitable exterior wooden furniture.
- Apply two exceptionally thin coats to bare timber.
- One thin coat is normally sufficient for maintenance where the existing finish remains sound.
- Stir thoroughly before and throughout application.
- Do not thin the product.
- Timber moisture must not exceed approximately 20%.
- Allow ingredient-rich and resinous timber to weather before coating.
- Clear Garden Furniture Oil does not stop natural UV greying.
- Use a suitable pigmented Decking Oil where stronger UV resistance is required.
- Remove all excess oil from slats, joints, corners and end grain.
- Heavy application can cause stickiness and prolonged drying.
- Allow approximately 12 hours between coats.
- Protect the furniture from rain and dew while drying.
- Completely remove paint, varnish and lacquer before application.
- Consider WR Base Coat for suitable softwoods requiring additional protection.
- Use Wood Reviver Power-Gel before recoating greyed timber.
- Always complete a representative test area.
Tool Cleaning
Clean suitable brushes and reusable application equipment immediately after use with Osmo Brush Cleaner & Thinner .
Oil-Soaked Cloth Safety: Cloths, pads and absorbent materials contaminated with drying oils can generate heat while curing. Lay them flat outdoors to dry safely or store them in a suitable sealed metal container before disposal in accordance with the product safety information.
