Osmo Decking Oil is a premium exterior wood oil designed to protect, maintain and enhance timber decking, garden furniture, privacy screens and other suitable outdoor wooden surfaces.

Its natural oil-based formulation penetrates into the timber while creating a highly water-repellent, dirt-resistant and weather-resistant surface. The microporous finish allows the wood to breathe naturally, helping to reduce swelling and shrinkage without forming a brittle coating that cracks, peels, flakes or blisters.

Available in clear, transparent coloured and anti-slip options, Osmo Decking Oil can either allow exterior timber to weather naturally or help slow greying while enriching its colour and grain.

Wiltshire Wood Recommendation:
For the strongest protection against weathering and greying, choose one of the pigmented Decking Oil colours rather than 007 Teak Clear. The transparent pigments provide greater UV resistance while still allowing the natural grain and character of the timber to remain visible.

Apply two exceptionally thin coats using an Osmo Decking Brush . Work with the grain, spread the oil thoroughly and remove any puddles or heavy deposits from grooves, joints and board edges before drying.

Breathable Exterior Protection

Osmo Decking Oil protects exterior timber without creating a heavy film-forming coating. Natural oils penetrate the wood fibres while the finished surface remains microporous, allowing moisture vapour to move through the timber.

This helps reduce excessive swelling and shrinkage as exterior timber is exposed to changing weather conditions. When signs of wear eventually become visible, the surface can normally be cleaned and refreshed with one additional thin maintenance coat without completely sanding the decking.

Exterior Oil Slows Weathering — It Does Not Stop Nature: All exterior timber will gradually weather and grey when exposed to sunlight, moisture and seasonal conditions. Pigmented Decking Oils slow this process more effectively than a clear finish, but regular cleaning and timely maintenance coats are still required.

Why Choose Osmo Decking Oil?

Choose Your Decking Oil Finish

Finish Appearance Best For
006 Bangkirai A warm transparent brown shade that enriches the wood while keeping the grain visible. Bangkirai, Balau, Ipe and other tropical hardwoods, as well as timber where a rich natural brown finish is preferred.
007 Teak Clear A clear satin oil that enriches the timber without adding coloured pigment. Teak and other exterior timber where natural weathering and gradual greying are acceptable.
019 Grey A transparent grey finish that gives exterior timber a controlled, contemporary weathered appearance. Modern decking, garden furniture and landscaping where a soft grey colour is wanted.
021 Bog Oak A deep transparent brown with a dark, aged oak appearance. Traditional or contemporary exterior timber where a rich, dark-brown finish is required.
020 Black A bold transparent black that colours the timber while allowing grain and natural texture to remain visible. Statement decking, screens, planters and modern exterior designs.
430 Anti-Slip Clear A clear satin specialist topcoat containing an anti-slip additive. The second and final coat over a coloured Osmo Decking Oil where additional slip resistance is required.

007 Teak Clear Provides Limited UV Protection: Clear oil contains no protective colour pigment, so the timber will naturally grey more quickly than it would beneath a pigmented Decking Oil. Choose Teak Clear when you are happy for the timber to weather naturally.

430 Anti-Slip Is a Topcoat: Anti-Slip Decking Oil is not designed as a standalone two-coat treatment on bare timber. Apply one coloured Osmo Decking Oil base coat first, allow it to dry, then apply one thin coat of 430 Anti-Slip Clear as the final coat.

Standard Decking Oil vs Anti-Slip System

System Coat One Coat Two
Standard colour system One thin coat of the selected Decking Oil colour. A second thin coat of the same Decking Oil colour.
Reduced colour intensity One thin coat of the selected pigmented Decking Oil. One thin coat of 430 Anti-Slip Clear where compatible and suitable.
Anti-slip system One thin pigmented Decking Oil base coat. One thin coat of 430 Anti-Slip Clear.
Clear Teak system One thin coat of 007 Teak Clear. A second thin coat of 007 Teak Clear.

Which Osmo Exterior Product Is Right for Me?

Suitable Timber Species

Timber Suitability Preparation Guidance
Oak, ash, beech, alder and birch Suitable subject to testing Ensure the timber is clean, absorbent and below 20% moisture.
Pine and pressure-treated pine Suitable after weathering Pressure-treated timber must weather sufficiently for excess salts and moisture to disperse before coating.
Douglas fir and larch Suitable after weathering Allow resinous timber to weather for at least approximately six weeks to improve absorption.
Cedar Suitable after weathering Allow approximately twelve weeks’ exposure before initial treatment, then check moisture and absorption.
Bangkirai, Balau, Garapa and Massaranduba Suitable after weathering Allow approximately twelve weeks for extractives and natural oils to weather before treatment.
Ipe, teak, iroko and other oily hardwoods Suitable subject to testing Allow the correct weathering period and consider degreasing with Osmo Brush Cleaner & Thinner before coating.
Thermally modified timber Suitable Thermally modified timber may grey rapidly, so early treatment is normally beneficial.
Green oak Not suitable while wet Do not apply until the timber moisture content is below the maximum 20% requirement.

Exterior timber varies considerably in natural oil content, extractives, treatment chemicals and moisture. Always complete a representative trial before treating the full area.

Suitable Surfaces

  • Timber decking
  • Smooth decking boards
  • Grooved and ribbed decking boards
  • Decking steps and exterior timber stairs
  • Balconies and timber terraces
  • Garden furniture
  • Benches and outdoor seating
  • Privacy screens
  • Exterior timber planters
  • Suitable exterior timber panels
  • Thermally modified exterior timber
  • Previously Decking Oil-treated timber after suitable cleaning

Horizontal and Vertical Surfaces: Decking Oil is primarily selected for horizontal decking and similarly exposed outdoor timber. For vertical cladding, doors, windows, pergolas and summerhouses, consider Osmo UV-Protection Oil or another suitable Osmo exterior system.

New Timber Must Be Ready to Absorb Oil

New exterior timber is not always ready to coat immediately. Natural oils, resin, tannins, treatment salts and elevated moisture can prevent Decking Oil from penetrating and drying correctly.

Timber Condition Typical Waiting Period Reason
Resinous larch or Douglas fir At least approximately 6 weeks Allows excess resin and extractives to weather and improves absorption.
Cedar and many tropical hardwoods Approximately 12 weeks Allows natural oils and extractives to disperse before coating.
Pressure-treated timber Approximately 12 weeks in wetter conditions or longer in dry weather Allows timber moisture and treatment salts to reduce.
Timber with high natural extractives At least approximately 4 weeks or suitable degreasing Improves penetration and reduces drying problems.
Thermally modified timber Treat promptly once ready This timber can weather and grey particularly quickly.

Absorption Test:
Sprinkle a small quantity of clean water onto the dry timber. If it beads strongly and remains on the surface, the wood may still contain too much natural oil, resin or previous treatment to accept Decking Oil correctly. If it darkens and absorbs evenly, the timber is more likely to be ready.

Cleaning or Reviving Existing Decking

Decking Condition Recommended Product Purpose
General dirt and outdoor contamination Osmo Decking Cleaner Concentrated cleaner for untreated or previously oiled exterior timber.
Greyed and heavily weathered timber Osmo Wood Reviver Power-Gel Removes the grey weathered patina and helps reveal the warmer natural timber beneath.
Greyed timber requiring scrubbing Osmo Decking Cleaning Scrub Brush Works Decking Cleaner or Wood Reviver Gel into the timber grain and board texture.
Clean but lightly worn coating Matching Osmo Decking Oil Normally one thin maintenance coat after thorough cleaning and drying.

Allow the Timber to Dry Completely: After using Decking Cleaner or Wood Reviver Power-Gel, rinse as required and allow the timber to dry fully before applying Decking Oil. Moisture content must be below approximately 20%.

Recommended Application Tools

Application Tool Best For How It Is Used
Osmo Decking Brush Set Smooth, grooved and ribbed decking boards. Work along each board, pushing the oil into the grain and grooves while stretching it into an exceptionally thin, even coat.
Osmo Applicator Set Smooth, flat exterior timber where rapid distribution is helpful. Apply very sparingly, then lay the coating off along the grain with the Decking Brush.
Wood Coating Brushes Board ends, steps, edges, balustrades and difficult areas. Use the appropriate brush width and check corners and joints for excess product.
Decking Cleaning Scrub Brush Preparing dirty or greyed timber before oiling. Scrub cleaning products along the grain, then rinse and allow the timber to dry thoroughly.

Our Preferred Decking Method:
On smooth decking, the oil can be distributed quickly with a suitable applicator or roller before being laid off along the grain with the Osmo Decking Brush .

On grooved decking, apply directly with the Decking Brush so the oil reaches into the grooves without pooling. Always complete individual boards from end to end to reduce overlap marks.

Coverage and drying times are approximate. Timber species, porosity, texture, preparation, temperature, humidity, airflow and application thickness will affect the result.

Best Conditions for Application

  • Apply when the air and timber temperature are between 10°C and 35°C.
  • Ensure the timber is clean, dry and frost-free.
  • Timber moisture content must not exceed approximately 20%.
  • Choose a dry weather window with no rain expected during drying.
  • Avoid applying to decking that is hot from intense direct sunlight.
  • Do not apply during rain, frost, heavy dew or very high humidity.
  • Provide good airflow throughout drying.
  • Allow each coat to dry fully before applying the next.

Check the Weather Forecast: Exterior oil needs sufficient dry weather before, during and after application. Rain, dew or heavy moisture before the coating has dried can cause marking, patchiness and delayed curing.

Surface Preparation

  • Remove furniture, planters, mats and loose objects from the working area.
  • Sweep or vacuum away loose dirt, leaves and debris.
  • Clean dirty decking with Osmo Decking Cleaner .
  • Treat greyed or heavily weathered timber with Osmo Wood Reviver Power-Gel .
  • Rinse cleaning products as directed and allow the decking to dry thoroughly.
  • Ensure timber moisture content is below approximately 20%.
  • Allow new timber to weather for the period appropriate to the wood species and treatment.
  • Completely remove varnish, paint and other film-forming coatings.
  • Thoroughly clean or lightly sand compatible old microporous oil finishes.
  • Do not finish sanding finer than approximately P120.
  • Replace loose, rotten, split or structurally damaged boards before coating.
  • Secure protruding screws and fixings.
  • Stir the Decking Oil thoroughly before and throughout application.
  • Complete a representative test area before treating the full deck.

Avoid Aggressive Pressure Washing: High-pressure washing can damage and roughen timber fibres, increasing product consumption and creating an uneven surface. Use suitable cleaning products and a decking scrub brush wherever practical.

How to Apply Osmo Decking Oil

  1. Confirm that the decking is clean, completely dry and ready to absorb oil.
  2. Stir the product thoroughly from the bottom of the tin. Do not thin.
  3. Cut in around walls, posts, edges and difficult details using a suitable brush.
  4. Apply the first coat exceptionally thinly with an Osmo Decking Brush .
  5. Complete individual boards from end to end wherever possible.
  6. Work along the timber grain and spread the oil thoroughly.
  7. Brush oil out of grooves, joints, screw holes and low spots where it may collect.
  8. Check the surface from several angles for puddles, overlap marks and heavy areas.
  9. Redistribute all visible excess before allowing the coating to dry.
  10. Allow approximately 12 hours’ drying with good airflow and suitable weather.
  11. Once fully dry, apply the second coat just as thinly.
  12. Where an anti-slip system is required, apply 430 Anti-Slip Clear as the second coat over the dried pigmented base coat.
  13. Protect the area from rain, dew and foot traffic while drying.

Professional Application Tip:
More oil does not create better exterior protection. Heavy coats may remain sticky, attract dirt and take considerably longer to dry. Two thin, even coats will produce a much more reliable and professional finish than one heavy application.

Applying to Grooved Decking

  1. Clean dirt and debris thoroughly from inside every groove.
  2. Allow the decking to dry fully.
  3. Apply Decking Oil directly with the Osmo Decking Brush.
  4. Work along each board and move the brush into the groove profile.
  5. Avoid flooding the grooves with oil.
  6. Brush out all pooled or heavy areas immediately.
  7. Inspect board ends and joints where excess commonly collects.
  8. Allow the first coat to dry fully before applying the second.

Applying 430 Anti-Slip Clear

  1. Apply one thin pigmented Osmo Decking Oil base coat.
  2. Allow the coloured base coat to dry for approximately 12 hours.
  3. Stir 430 Anti-Slip Clear thoroughly to distribute the anti-slip additive.
  4. Apply one thin and even coat with the Osmo Decking Brush.
  5. Work consistently along the grain and avoid heavy overlaps.
  6. Do not attempt to polish or buff the coating smooth.
  7. Allow approximately 12 hours’ drying with good ventilation.
  8. Recoat high-traffic areas before the anti-slip performance becomes heavily worn.

Slip Resistance Requires Maintenance: Dirt, algae, surface wear and poor cleaning can all reduce traction. Anti-Slip Decking Oil reduces the risk of slipping when correctly applied and maintained, but it cannot make contaminated or neglected decking completely slip-proof.

Drying and Use

Stage Approximate Time Guidance
Between coats Approximately 12 hours Allow the first coat to dry completely before applying the second.
Light foot traffic Once the final coat is fully dry Test an inconspicuous area and avoid heavy use immediately.
Furniture replacement After sufficient drying Lift furniture into position rather than dragging it across the coating.
Wet weather exposure After the finish has dried properly Protect the surface from rain and heavy dew throughout drying.

Drying Times Are Weather Dependent: Lower temperatures, limited airflow and high humidity can extend the drying time considerably. Do not apply the next coat simply because twelve hours have passed; the first coat must feel properly dry.

Cleaning and Routine Care

  1. Sweep regularly to remove leaves, soil and abrasive debris.
  2. Keep gaps and drainage routes clear so water does not remain trapped.
  3. Clean the surface using Osmo Decking Cleaner when dirt, surface contamination or green growth begins to develop.
  4. Scrub along the timber grain using the Osmo Decking Cleaning Scrub Brush .
  5. Rinse as required and allow the timber to dry completely.
  6. Inspect regularly for worn areas, particularly around doors, steps and main walkways.
  7. Apply one thin maintenance coat before the timber becomes completely bare.

Restoring Greyed Decking

  1. Sweep the decking thoroughly and remove loose contamination.
  2. Wet the timber in accordance with the Wood Reviver instructions.
  3. Apply Osmo Wood Reviver Power-Gel evenly.
  4. Work the gel into the grain using an Osmo Decking Cleaning Scrub Brush .
  5. Allow the product to react for the specified period without allowing it to dry on the surface.
  6. Scrub and rinse thoroughly with clean water.
  7. Allow the timber to dry completely and confirm moisture content is below approximately 20%.
  8. Apply the selected pigmented Osmo Decking Oil system.

Cleaner or Reviver?
Use Decking Cleaner for general dirt and routine maintenance. Use Wood Reviver Power-Gel where the timber itself has greyed through weathering and you want to restore more of its original natural colour before recoating.

When Should Decking Be Recoated?

  • The colour begins to fade noticeably.
  • The surface starts to look dry or patchy.
  • Water no longer beads effectively.
  • High-traffic routes become lighter than surrounding boards.
  • The anti-slip finish begins to wear in main walkways.
  • The coating remains intact but protection is visibly reducing.

Recoat Before the Timber Becomes Bare: Timely maintenance normally requires only cleaning and one thin coat. Waiting until the wood has greyed, become dirty or lost its coating completely makes restoration considerably more involved.

Important Application Notes

  • Use on suitable clean, dry and absorbent exterior timber.
  • Timber moisture content must not exceed approximately 20%.
  • Allow new timber to weather for the correct period before coating.
  • Stir thoroughly before and during application.
  • Do not thin the product.
  • Apply two exceptionally thin coats for standard Decking Oil systems.
  • Apply 430 Anti-Slip Clear only as a final topcoat over a pigmented base coat.
  • Complete individual boards from end to end where practical.
  • Remove all puddles and excess oil from grooves and joints.
  • Allow approximately 12 hours between coats.
  • Apply only in suitable dry weather conditions.
  • Avoid application to hot timber in intense direct sunlight.
  • 007 Teak Clear provides only limited protection against greying.
  • Pigmented colours slow greying more effectively than clear oil.
  • Do not apply over paint, lacquer or film-forming varnish.
  • Do not sand finer than approximately P120 before application.
  • Avoid aggressive pressure washing that damages timber fibres.
  • Always complete a test area on the actual timber.
  • Use Decking Cleaner for general maintenance cleaning.
  • Use Wood Reviver Power-Gel for greyed and weathered timber.

Tool Cleaning

Clean suitable brushes, applicators and reusable tools immediately after use with Osmo Brush Cleaner & Thinner .

Oil-Soaked Cloth Safety: Cloths, pads and absorbent materials contaminated with drying oils can generate heat while curing. Lay them flat outdoors to dry safely or store them in a suitable sealed metal container before disposal in accordance with the safety data.
