Osmo WR Base Coat 4001 is a clear, deep-penetrating exterior wood preservative designed to provide additional protection against wood-rotting fungi, wood-staining fungi, blue stain and wood-destroying insects.

Particularly recommended for suitable exterior softwoods, it penetrates into the timber to provide additional moisture resistance while helping reduce swelling and shrinkage. It also creates a suitable surface for a compatible Osmo exterior finishing oil or wood stain.

WR Base Coat is not a decorative finish and must not be left as the final exposed coating. Once completely dry, it must be overcoated with a compatible Osmo exterior product such as UV-Protection Oil, Natural Oil Woodstain or another suitable exterior finishing system.

Wiltshire Wood Recommendation:
Use Osmo WR Base Coat beneath a suitable exterior finish where additional protection against rot, blue stain and insect attack is required, particularly on untreated softwood used for windows, doors, cladding, pergolas, carports and garden structures.

Apply the specified quantity evenly and, where practical, treat all faces, edges and concealed surfaces before installation. Allow the Base Coat to dry completely before applying the chosen decorative topcoat.

Additional Protection Beneath Your Exterior Finish

Exterior wood is exposed to moisture, changing temperatures and biological attack. Osmo WR Base Coat penetrates beneath the surface and provides preventative protection before the timber receives its final decorative coating.

Unlike an exterior topcoat, it does not provide the finished colour, sheen or full UV resistance required for exposed timber. Its role is to protect and prepare the wood beneath the final Osmo coating system.

This Is a Base Coat Only: Osmo WR Base Coat must always be overcoated with a compatible exterior wood finish after it has dried. It is not designed to remain exposed as the final weatherproof or decorative surface.

Why Choose Osmo WR Base Coat?

  • Preventative preservative for suitable exterior timber
  • Protects against wood-rotting fungi
  • Protects against wood-staining fungi and blue stain
  • Protects against wood-destroying insects
  • Penetrates deeply into the timber
  • Provides additional moisture protection
  • Extremely water-repellent
  • Helps reduce timber swelling and shrinkage
  • Particularly recommended for exterior softwood
  • Suitable beneath compatible Osmo exterior finishes
  • Suitable for windows, doors, cladding and garden structures
  • Can be applied to all sides before installation
  • Improves the prepared surface for subsequent finishing
  • Can help regulate absorption on rough or absorbent timber
  • Clear formulation does not provide decorative colour
  • Normally requires no future maintenance once correctly overcoated

What Is WR Base Coat Designed to Do?

Function What It Does What It Does Not Do
Preservative protection Helps protect timber against rot, blue stain and wood-destroying insects. It does not replace the need for a decorative exterior topcoat.
Moisture protection Penetrates the timber and provides additional resistance to moisture. It does not make poorly detailed or permanently wet timber maintenance-free.
Dimensional stability Helps reduce excessive swelling and shrinkage caused by changing moisture levels. It cannot prevent natural timber movement completely.
Surface preparation Creates a suitable base for compatible Osmo exterior finishes. It provides no finished colour, sheen or complete UV protection.

WR Base Coat 4001 vs WR Base Coat Aqua

Product Application Main Difference
WR Base Coat 4001 Brush or suitable roller application. Oil-based exterior preservative containing protection against rot, blue stain and wood-destroying insects.
WR Base Coat Aqua Water-based system that may be suitable for professional spray application under controlled conditions. Separate water-based formulation. Check current Osmo guidance before specifying or ordering.

4001 Replaced the Previous Oil-Based 4005 Product: Always check the product number before ordering or referring to older specifications. This listing is for Osmo WR Base Coat 4001 Clear.

Which Osmo Topcoat Should I Use?

Topcoat Best For Important Guidance
Osmo UV-Protection Oil 410 Vertical exterior timber requiring clear, biocide-free UV protection. Apply after WR Base Coat has dried completely. Two thin finishing coats are normally required on new timber.
Osmo UV-Protection Oil Extra Vertical exterior timber requiring clear UV protection with additional protection of the coating against mould, algae and fungal attack. Available in Clear Satin and Clear Matt. Do not use over white exterior finishes unless expressly approved by Osmo.
Osmo UV-Protection Oil Tints Vertical exterior timber where transparent colour and stronger visible UV resistance are wanted. Choose the colour after completing a representative trial on the actual timber.
Osmo Decking Oil Horizontal decking, steps and exterior walking surfaces. Confirm that WR Base Coat is appropriate for the timber and complete decking system before use.
Osmo Garden Furniture Oil Suitable exterior wooden tables, chairs and garden furniture. Particularly consider WR Base Coat on suitable softwood furniture where additional preservative protection is required.

The Topcoat Provides the Finished Appearance: WR Base Coat is clear and provides no decorative colour or meaningful UV resistance by itself. The selected finishing oil or stain determines the final colour, sheen, UV performance and maintenance requirements.

Suitable Exterior Applications

  • Timber cladding and façades
  • Exterior wooden windows
  • Exterior doors
  • Window shutters
  • Carports
  • Pergolas
  • Balcony railings
  • Exterior fencing
  • Privacy screens
  • Summerhouses
  • Garden buildings
  • Suitable garden furniture
  • Vertical softwood structures
  • Hidden faces and edges of exterior joinery
  • End grain before the specified finishing system

No Direct Ground or Surface-Water Contact: WR Base Coat is intended for exterior timber that is not in permanent contact with soil, standing water or surface water. It is not a treatment for buried posts, submerged timber or wood in continuous wet contact.

Suitable Timber

Timber Suitability Guidance
Pine and spruce Particularly recommended Softwoods can be vulnerable to blue stain, rot and insect attack. Apply on all sides where practical.
Douglas fir and larch Suitable subject to preparation Resinous timber may need to weather before treatment so the surface can absorb the Base Coat properly.
Cedar Suitable subject to testing Natural oils and extractives can affect absorption and drying.
Accoya, Kebony and modified timber Subject to current manufacturer guidance Confirm compatibility with both the timber manufacturer and the selected Osmo finishing system.
Oak and tannin-rich hardwoods Subject to testing Moisture, tannins and extractives may influence the complete coating system.
Pressure-treated timber Subject to drying and compatibility Allow excess treatment moisture and salts to disperse before application.
Green or wet timber Not suitable while wet Wait until the timber moisture content is no more than approximately 20%.

Timber species, previous treatment, natural oils, resin and moisture content can all influence absorption. Always complete a representative trial before treating the full project.

How Many Coats Are Required?

Osmo specifies an application quantity equivalent to approximately 160ml per square metre. Depending on the timber species, absorbency and surface characteristics, this quantity may be achieved in one, two or three controlled applications.

Timber Condition Possible Application Key Requirement
Highly absorbent softwood May accept the required quantity in fewer generous, even applications. Achieve even penetration without leaving runs or puddles.
Dense or less absorbent timber May require the total quantity to be divided across controlled applications. Do not force excessive product onto timber that will not absorb it.
Rough-sawn or textured timber Usually consumes more product than smooth planed timber. Work the preservative fully into the texture and surface grain.
Hidden faces, edges and end grain Treat carefully before installation where practical. Maintain even protection around the complete timber component.

Follow the Application Quantity: Do not rely solely on a simple coat count. The aim is to apply the manufacturer’s specified total quantity evenly across the timber. Absorbency will determine whether that quantity is achieved in one or several applications.

Coverage and Available Sizes

Size Approximate Coverage Recommended Use
125ml Approximately 0.6–0.75m² Testing compatibility, treating small timber components or local exterior repairs.
0.75L Approximately 3.75–4.5m² Doors, windows, small garden structures and individual joinery components.
2.5L Approximately 12.5–15m² Cladding, pergolas, garden buildings and larger professional projects.

Coverage is based on approximately 5–6m² per litre. Actual consumption varies substantially according to timber species, porosity, texture and preparation. Rough-sawn and weathered timber may use considerably more.

Best Conditions for Application

  • Apply to clean, dry and frost-free timber.
  • Timber moisture content must not exceed approximately 20%.
  • Apply between approximately 10°C and 30°C.
  • Do not apply during damp conditions.
  • Do not apply when rain is imminent.
  • Protect freshly treated timber from rain while drying.
  • Maintain good ventilation during application and drying.
  • Protect soil, plants, drains and watercourses from splashes.

Environmental Protection Is Essential: WR Base Coat contains active preservative ingredients. Do not allow the liquid product to enter soil, drains, ponds, watercourses or other aquatic environments. Protect nearby plants and ground surfaces during application.

Surface Preparation

  • Ensure the timber is clean, dry, absorbent and free from frost.
  • Confirm that moisture content is no more than approximately 20%.
  • Completely remove paint, varnish, lacquer and other film-forming coatings.
  • Thoroughly clean compatible old microporous stains where renovation is appropriate.
  • Allow new resinous, oily or pressure-treated timber to weather or dry as required.
  • Repair or replace rotten, structurally damaged or unstable timber before coating.
  • Use galvanised or corrosion-resistant fixings wherever appropriate.
  • Remove all sanding dust before application.
  • Stir WR Base Coat thoroughly. Do not thin.
  • Protect plants, soil, water storage and nearby surfaces from splashes.
  • Complete a representative trial before treating the full area.

Do Not Apply over Silicone: WR Base Coat is compatible with many common adhesives and fillers but not silicone products. Remove silicone contamination from the timber before applying the coating system.

How to Apply Osmo WR Base Coat

  1. Confirm that the timber is clean, dry, frost-free and ready to absorb the preservative.
  2. Stir the product thoroughly. Do not thin.
  3. Protect surrounding soil, plants, paving, drains and watercourses.
  4. Apply evenly with an Osmo Flat Brush or suitable microfibre roller.
  5. Work along the wood grain and distribute the product consistently.
  6. Apply to all faces, edges and concealed areas before installation where practical.
  7. Pay particular attention to joints, end grain, cut edges and hidden surfaces.
  8. Achieve the required total application quantity without leaving runs, puddles or heavy deposits.
  9. Remove any excess from edges before it dries.
  10. Allow approximately 12 hours’ drying with good ventilation.
  11. De-nib lightly if the Base Coat raises the timber grain.
  12. Apply the selected compatible Osmo exterior topcoat once the Base Coat is completely dry.

Professional Application Tip:
On new exterior joinery, apply WR Base Coat before installation wherever possible. Treating hidden faces, edges and cut ends gives much more complete protection than coating only the visible face after installation.

Protecting End Grain

End grain absorbs moisture far more rapidly than the main face of timber. WR Base Coat should be worked carefully into exposed cut ends before the full decorative system is applied.

For enhanced protection of exposed timber ends, complete the system with Osmo End Grain Sealing Wax 5735 where appropriate.

End Grain Sealing Wax Is for Cut Ends Only: Do not use End Grain Sealing Wax as a broad surface treatment. Apply it only to exposed end grain and remove accidental excess from adjoining faces.

Recommended Application Tools

Application Tool Best For How It Is Used
Osmo Flat Brush Doors, windows, frames, timber sections, edges and detailed joinery. Work the preservative evenly into the grain, joints and end grain.
Osmo Microfibre Roller Larger smooth cladding boards and flat exterior timber sections. Load evenly and distribute the Base Coat thoroughly without leaving runs or heavy roller edges.
Wood Coating Brushes Narrow components, joints, rebates and difficult areas. Select a suitable brush width and ensure the complete timber surface receives an even treatment.

Recommended Accessories

Product Recommended Use
