Bona Natural Primer is a pigmented, waterborne wood floor primer designed to retain the light, untreated appearance of freshly sanded timber.
Applied in one or two coats, it reduces the darkening and yellowing normally associated with clear finishes. Its forgiving formulation makes it easy to apply by roller and particularly well suited to oak, ash, pine and other lighter timber species where a raw wood look is required.
Why Choose Bona Natural Primer?
- Creates a light, untreated raw wood appearance
- Reduces yellowing and colour change
- Suitable for one or two-coat application
- Highly forgiving roller application
- Fast drying
- Waterborne and low odour
- GREENGUARD certified for low indoor emissions
- Designed for use beneath Bona waterborne lacquers
Suitable Flooring
- Oak flooring
- Ash flooring
- Pine and other light softwoods
- Engineered wood flooring with a sandable wear layer
- Solid wood flooring
- Parquet and herringbone flooring
- Newly installed or professionally sanded existing floors
Wiltshire Wood Recommendation:
For the closest appearance to freshly sanded, untreated timber, apply one even coat of Bona Natural Primer followed by two coats of Bona Traffic HD Raw . This gives the most natural-looking result together with excellent durability for busy domestic and commercial floors.
Compatible Topcoats
| Compatible Finish | Recommended Use | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Bona Traffic HD Raw | Heavy domestic and commercial floors | Closest raw wood look with ultra-matt, highly durable protection |
| Bona Traffic HD Extra Matt | High-traffic domestic and commercial floors | Natural matt appearance with maximum durability |
| Bona Mega EVO Ultra Matt | Heavy domestic and medium commercial floors | Natural appearance with convenient one-component application |
Bona Natural Primer is compatible with Bona waterborne topcoats. To retain the palest untreated appearance, choose an Extra Matt or Ultra Matt finish. Always test the full primer and topcoat system on the actual timber before completing the floor.

Recommended Application Tools
- Bona SuperCoat Roller Head 250mm – optimised for even distribution of Bona primers and lacquers.
- Bona 250mm Roller Handle – compatible with the Bona SuperCoat roller sleeve.
- Telescopic Extension Pole & Bona Roller Set – complete applicator set for larger flooring areas.
Floor Preparation
- Sand the floor evenly back to clean, bare timber.
- Complete the final sanding pass consistently across the entire area.
- Vacuum thoroughly, including joints, edges and corners.
- Ensure the timber is dry and free from oil, wax, polish or contamination.
- Shake the container thoroughly before and during use to keep the pigment evenly distributed.
- Test the complete primer and lacquer system on the actual timber before starting.
Application
- Bring the primer, timber and room to suitable working temperature before application.
- Shake Bona Natural Primer thoroughly and continue to agitate it periodically during use.
- Apply an even coat using a Bona SuperCoat Roller , working methodically and maintaining a wet edge.
- Avoid heavy deposits, roller marks and uneven overlap, as the primer is pigmented and inconsistencies may remain visible.
- Allow approximately 2–3 hours to dry under normal conditions.
- If a paler or more pronounced untreated appearance is required, apply a second thin, even coat in accordance with Bona's instructions.
- Once fully dry, abrade lightly only where required by the selected system, then vacuum the floor carefully.
- Apply the selected compatible Bona topcoat, normally in two even coats.
Recommended Gap Preparation
Where fine joints require filling before priming, use a suitable sanding dust filler such as Bona Mix & Fill Plus . Allow the filler to dry fully and complete the final sanding before applying Bona Natural Primer.
Important: Bona Natural Primer is a pigmented primer, so application technique and timber preparation will directly affect the finished appearance. Maintain a consistent sanding sequence, mix the primer thoroughly, work with a wet edge and avoid localised touch-ins. Natural colour variation, tannins and timber repairs may remain visible. Always test the complete system before applying it to the full floor.
