Osmo UV-Protection Oil Extra is a clear exterior wood oil developed for vertical timber surfaces including doors, windows, cladding, fences, pergolas, balconies, carports and summerhouses.

Its natural oil-based formulation penetrates into the timber while creating a highly water-repellent, breathable and weather-resistant surface. The microporous finish allows the wood to breathe naturally, helping to reduce swelling and shrinkage without forming a brittle coating that cracks, peels, flakes or blisters.

When applied as a complete two-coat system on suitable untreated vertical timber, UV-Protection Oil Extra slows the natural greying process by a factor of up to 12 compared with untreated wood. It also contains active ingredients that help protect the finished coating against mould, algae and fungal attack.

Wiltshire Wood Recommendation:
Choose UV-Protection Oil Extra for exterior vertical timber where you want clear protection together with additional resistance against mould, algae and fungal growth within the coating.

Apply two exceptionally thin coats to bare timber. For renovation, one thin coat is normally sufficient where the existing finish remains sound, clean and well bonded.

Clear Protection for Vertical Exterior Timber

Osmo UV-Protection Oil Extra is designed specifically for vertical exterior wood. Vertical surfaces shed water more readily than horizontal decking, allowing the clear oil system to provide long-lasting protection while keeping the timber grain and natural colour visible.

It can be used either as a standalone clear finish or as a clear final coat over compatible coloured Osmo exterior treatments to help extend the interval between maintenance coats.

For Vertical Timber Only: UV-Protection Oil Extra is not intended as the primary finish for horizontal decking, steps or frequently walked-on exterior timber. For decking, use Osmo Decking Oil or the appropriate anti-slip decking system.

UV-Protection Oil vs UV-Protection Oil Extra

Product Best For Main Difference
Osmo UV-Protection Oil 410 Vertical exterior timber where a clear, biocide-free finish is preferred. Does not contain the additional active ingredients used to protect the coating against mould, algae and fungal attack.
Osmo UV-Protection Oil Extra Vertical exterior timber exposed to damp, shaded or more demanding outdoor conditions. Contains active ingredients that help protect the coating against mould, algae and fungal attack.

Which One Should You Choose?
Choose UV-Protection Oil 410 where you specifically want the standard clear system without added biocidal active ingredients.

Choose UV-Protection Oil Extra where the additional mould, algae and fungal resistance within the coating is beneficial, particularly on shaded, damp or heavily exposed exterior timber.

Extra Is for Exterior Use Only: UV-Protection Oil Extra contains active biocidal ingredients and should only be used on suitable outdoor timber. It is not intended for children’s toys, animal enclosures, food-contact surfaces or interior woodwork.

Choose Your Finish

Finish Appearance Best For
420 Clear Satin A clear finish that enriches the timber with a subtle satin sheen. Doors, windows, cladding and joinery where a traditional, gently polished exterior appearance is preferred.
1420 Clear Matt A clear lower-sheen finish that retains a more natural-looking exterior appearance. Contemporary cladding, fencing and exterior joinery where minimal visible sheen is preferred.

Clear Oil Still Changes Timber Colour: Both variants are clear, but the oil will normally enrich and slightly darken the natural colour of the timber. Complete a representative trial before coating the full area.

Which Osmo Exterior Product Is Right for Me?

Osmo Product Best For Key Difference
UV-Protection Oil Extra Vertical exterior doors, windows, cladding, fencing, pergolas and summerhouses. Clear UV protection with added mould, algae and fungal resistance within the coating.
UV-Protection Oil 410 Vertical exterior timber where a standard clear, biocide-free system is preferred. Similar clear UV protection without the added active ingredients found in Extra.
UV-Protection Oil Tints Vertical timber where transparent colour and stronger visible UV protection are required. Adds transparent pigment while keeping the wood grain visible.
Osmo Decking Oil Horizontal decking, steps and frequently walked-on exterior timber. Designed for the greater weather and wear exposure experienced by horizontal surfaces.
Garden Furniture Oil Hardwood garden furniture and exterior furniture surfaces. Specialist clear oil developed particularly for garden furniture.

Suitable Surfaces

  • Exterior wooden doors
  • Window frames
  • Window shutters
  • Timber cladding
  • Weatherboarding
  • Fencing
  • Privacy screens
  • Pergolas
  • Carports
  • Balcony balustrades
  • Summerhouses
  • Garden buildings
  • Timber façades
  • Vertical timber panels
  • Previously Osmo-treated vertical timber following suitable preparation

Not for Horizontal Decking: Do not use UV-Protection Oil Extra as a replacement for Decking Oil on horizontal walking surfaces, deck boards or exterior steps.

Suitable Timber Species

Timber Suitability Preparation Guidance
Oak, beech, ash, alder and birch Recommended Ensure the timber is clean, absorbent and below approximately 20% moisture.
Thermowood and thermally modified timber Recommended subject to testing These timbers can grey quickly, so early treatment or a tinted system may be preferable.
Pine, spruce and Douglas fir Suitable with WR Base Coat recommended Consider Osmo WR Base Coat before applying the finish.
Accoya and Kebony Suitable with WR Base Coat recommended Follow Osmo’s preparation guidance and complete a representative trial.
Cedar, teak, iroko, mahogany and walnut Suitable after weathering Allow ingredient-rich timber to weather sufficiently so natural oils and extractives reduce before application.
Larch Suitable after approximately 2–6 weeks’ weathering WR Base Coat is also recommended before the finishing system.
Sapele Suitable after approximately 3–4 weeks’ weathering Check absorption and complete a trial application.
Pressure-treated timber Suitable after sufficient weathering Allow treatment salts and excess moisture to disperse before coating.
Green oak Not suitable while wet Do not apply until moisture content is below approximately 20%.

Timber species, treatment chemicals, natural oils and moisture content can all affect absorption and drying. Always complete a representative trial before coating the full area.

Using UV-Protection Oil Extra as a Clear Topcoat

UV-Protection Oil Extra can be used as a clear final coat over compatible Osmo exterior colour treatments to extend the maintenance interval while allowing the underlying colour to remain visible.

Clear Topcoat System:
Apply the selected compatible coloured Osmo exterior finish and allow it to dry completely. Then apply one exceptionally thin coat of UV-Protection Oil Extra as the final clear protective layer.

Always confirm compatibility and complete a test area because adding a clear topcoat may enrich the colour or alter the final sheen.

Two Clear Coats Are Required on Bare Timber: To achieve the stated UV-protection factor of 12 when using UV-Protection Oil Extra as a standalone clear finish, apply two thin coats. A single clear coat on untreated timber provides a significantly shorter protection period.

Cleaning and Reviving Existing Timber

Timber Condition Recommended Product Purpose
General surface dirt Osmo Decking Cleaner Cleaning exterior timber before maintenance or recoating.
Greyed and weathered timber Osmo Wood Reviver Power-Gel Removing the grey weathered patina before applying a new coating system.
Organic surface contamination Osmo Gard Clean Treating green growth and exterior contamination before refinishing.
Clean but lightly worn finish Matching UV-Protection Oil Extra Normally one thin maintenance coat once the surface is clean and dry.

Allow Timber to Dry Fully: After cleaning, rinsing or using Wood Reviver Power-Gel, allow the timber to dry completely and confirm that moisture content is below approximately 20% before coating.

Recommended Application Tools

Application Tool Best For How It Is Used
Osmo Flat Brush Doors, windows, frames, cladding boards and detailed exterior timber. Apply thinly with the grain and stretch the product thoroughly into an even film.
Osmo Microfibre Roller Larger flat cladding panels, gates and smooth vertical timber. Load lightly, distribute the coating evenly and lay off along the grain where necessary.
Wood Coating Brushes Frames, rebates, corners, mouldings and difficult exterior details. Choose an appropriate brush width and check corners for heavy deposits or runs.
Extension Poles and Handles Higher cladding and larger vertical surfaces where safer reach is required. Use only with a compatible roller or brush and maintain full control of the coating thickness.

Professional Application Tip:
Complete individual boards or sections from end to end wherever possible. Maintain a wet edge and avoid stopping in the middle of prominent cladding boards, doors or panels.

Apply exceptionally thinly. Heavy application can cause runs, slow drying and uneven sheen, particularly on smooth vertical timber.

Recommended Accessories

Best Conditions for Application

  • Apply to clean, dry and frost-free timber.
  • Timber moisture content must not exceed approximately 20%.
  • Choose a dry weather window with no rain forecast during drying.
  • Avoid application in direct intense sunlight.
  • Do not apply to timber that is excessively hot.
  • Avoid application during frost, heavy dew or high humidity.
  • Provide good airflow while each coat dries.
  • Allow each coat to dry completely before recoating.

Check the Weather Forecast: Rain, dew or high moisture before the finish has dried can cause marking, patchiness and delayed curing.

Surface Preparation

  • Ensure the timber is clean, dry, frost-free and free from grease, dirt, algae and contamination.
  • Timber moisture content must be below approximately 20%.
  • Allow ingredient-rich, resinous or pressure-treated timber to weather sufficiently before coating.
  • Clean sound old microporous Osmo finishes thoroughly before renovation.
  • Lightly sand weathered or uneven coatings where necessary.
  • Remove paint, varnish, lacquer and incompatible film-forming finishes completely.
  • Revive greyed timber using Osmo Wood Reviver Power-Gel .
  • Clean organic contamination using the appropriate exterior cleaner.
  • Round sharp exterior edges to a radius greater than approximately 2mm where practical.
  • Ensure horizontal details attached to vertical timber have sufficient fall to shed water.
  • Vacuum or brush away all sanding dust.
  • Stir the product thoroughly before and during application.
  • Complete a representative trial before coating the full area.

Protect All Faces Where Possible: On new doors, windows, cladding and joinery, apply the first coat to all faces and edges before installation wherever practical. This helps create more balanced protection around the timber.

How to Apply UV-Protection Oil Extra

  1. Confirm that the timber is clean, dry and ready to absorb oil.
  2. Stir the product thoroughly. Do not thin.
  3. Apply the first coat exceptionally thinly with an Osmo Flat Brush or suitable microfibre roller.
  4. Work with the grain and spread the product evenly.
  5. Complete individual boards, doors or panels from end to end wherever possible.
  6. Maintain a wet edge and avoid heavy overlaps.
  7. Check corners, rebates, joints and lower edges for runs or pooled product.
  8. Redistribute all visible excess before allowing the coating to dry.
  9. Allow approximately 12 hours’ drying with good ventilation.
  10. Once the first coat is fully dry, apply a second equally thin coat.
  11. Protect the timber from rain, dew and contamination throughout drying.

Professional Application Tip:
Thin coats are essential on vertical timber. Heavy application will not provide better UV protection and can lead to runs, tackiness, uneven sheen and extended drying times.

Renovating an Existing Finish

  1. Inspect the existing coating for wear, greying, mould and contamination.
  2. Clean the surface thoroughly.
  3. Treat greyed timber with Wood Reviver Power-Gel where required.
  4. Allow the timber to dry completely.
  5. Lightly sand loose, rough or uneven areas.
  6. Remove all dust.
  7. Apply one exceptionally thin coat of the matching finish where the existing coating remains sound.
  8. Where the timber has become bare or heavily weathered, apply a complete two-coat system.
  9. Maintain good ventilation and protect from rain while drying.

Recoat Before the Timber Greys:
Maintenance is simplest when one thin coat is applied as soon as signs of wear become visible. Waiting until the timber has greyed completely may require de-greying, more preparation and a full two-coat treatment.

Cleaning and Maintenance

Maintenance Stage Recommended Product Purpose

  • Use UV-Protection Oil Extra outside only.
  • Apply two exceptionally thin coats to bare timber.
  • One thin coat is normally sufficient for renovation where the existing finish remains sound.
  • Stir thoroughly before and throughout application.
  • Do not thin the product.
  • Timber moisture content must not exceed approximately 20%.
  • Two clear coats are required to achieve the stated UV-protection factor.
  • Heavy application can cause runs, tackiness and prolonged drying.
  • Allow approximately 12 hours between coats under suitable conditions.
  • Protect the finish from rain and dew while drying.
  • Allow ingredient-rich timber to weather before coating.
  • Consider WR Base Coat for suitable softwoods and modified timber.
  • Remove paint, varnish and lacquer completely before application.
  • Always complete a representative test area.
  • Use Wood Reviver Power-Gel where the natural greying process has already begun.
  • Recoat before the existing protection has worn away completely.

Tool Cleaning

Clean suitable brushes, rollers and reusable application equipment immediately after use with Osmo Brush Cleaner & Thinner .

Oil-Soaked Cloth Safety: Cloths, pads and absorbent materials contaminated with drying oils can generate heat while curing. Lay them flat outdoors to dry safely or store them in a suitable sealed metal container before disposal in accordance with the safety data.
