Description

Morrells Isosil is a high-quality shellac-based floor sealer formulated using refined shellacs and alcohol to create a fast-drying barrier primer with excellent clarity.

It is specifically designed to isolate and seal contaminants within timber substrates, particularly on tropical hardwoods where natural oils, waxes or previous treatments may interfere with the adhesion, drying or final appearance of floor lacquers.

Isosil is particularly useful when refurbishing existing timber floors. It helps lock in residual contaminants within the substrate that could otherwise cause issues such as poor lacquer curing, uneven finish or adhesion problems.

Once applied, Isosil forms an effective isolation layer ready for overcoating with compatible Morrells Induro floor lacquers.

Key benefits
• Fast drying shellac barrier primer
• Excellent clarity with minimal colour change
• Seals oils, waxes and other contaminants in timber
• Ideal for tropical hardwoods and problematic substrates
• Suitable for refurbishment projects where contamination may be present
• Improves adhesion and performance of subsequent lacquer systems

Typical uses
• Tropical hardwood flooring (e.g. teak, iroko, merbau)
• Refurbished timber floors where contamination may be present
• Isolation layer prior to applying Morrells floor lacquers

FAQs

1. What is Morrells Isosil used for?
Morrells Isosil is a shellac-based floor sealer designed to isolate contaminants in timber flooring before applying lacquer finishes. It is particularly useful on tropical hardwoods or refurbished floors where natural oils, waxes, or previous treatments may interfere with lacquer adhesion, drying, or the final appearance of the finish.

2. How do I apply Morrells Isosil?
Morrells Isosil can be applied using a roller, brush, or suitable floor applicator. Ensure the wood surface is clean, dry, and free from sanding dust before application. Apply a thin, even coat across the floor and allow it to dry fully before applying the chosen lacquer finish.

3. How long does Morrells Isosil take to dry?
Under typical conditions (around 18–20°C with good ventilation), Morrells Isosil becomes touch dry in approximately 20 minutes and can normally be recoated after around 90 minutes. Drying times may vary depending on temperature, humidity, and airflow.

4. How many coats of Morrells Isosil should I apply?
In most cases, a single coat of Morrells Isosil is sufficient. The product is formulated to create an effective isolation barrier with one application before applying the lacquer system.

5. What finishes can be applied over Morrells Isosil?
Morrells Isosil is designed to be used prior to applying Morrells Induro floor lacquers such as Induro XL1 or Induro XL2. It helps improve adhesion and reduces the risk of finishing problems caused by contaminants in the wood.

6. Does Morrells Isosil change the colour of the wood?
Morrells Isosil offers excellent clarity and generally has minimal effect on the natural appearance of the timber. As with any wood finishing product, it is recommended to test the product on a small, inconspicuous area before full application.

7. Can Morrells Isosil be used on all types of wood flooring?
Morrells Isosil is particularly suited to tropical hardwoods such as teak, iroko, and merbau, which naturally contain oils that can interfere with lacquer finishes. For most standard European timbers, a water-based primer may also be suitable depending on the finishing system being used.

8. Do I need to sand between Morrells Isosil and the lacquer?
In most cases, sanding between Morrells Isosil and the first coat of lacquer is not required if the lacquer is applied within the recommended recoating time. Always follow the lacquer manufacturer’s recommendations for best results.

9. What coverage does Morrells Isosil provide?
Morrells Isosil typically covers approximately 40m² per 5 litres, depending on the porosity of the timber, surface preparation, and application method.

10. How should Morrells Isosil be stored?
Store Morrells Isosil in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and sources of heat. As the product is alcohol based and flammable, the container should be kept tightly sealed when not in use and stored in accordance with the manufacturer’s safety guidance.
