Osmo UV-Protection Oil 410 is a clear, satin exterior wood oil developed to protect vertical timber surfaces while keeping the natural grain and character of the wood visible.

Ideal for exterior doors, windows, shutters, timber cladding, fencing, pergolas, balconies, carports and summerhouses, its natural oil-based formulation penetrates into the timber while creating a highly water-repellent, dirt-resistant and weather-resistant surface.

When applied as a complete two-coat system to suitable untreated wood, UV-Protection Oil 410 slows the natural greying process by a factor of up to 12 compared with untreated timber. Unlike UV-Protection Oil Extra, 410 does not contain additional active biocidal ingredients.

Wiltshire Wood Recommendation:
Choose Osmo UV-Protection Oil 410 when you want a clear exterior finish with strong UV protection but without the active film preservatives found in UV-Protection Oil Extra.

It is particularly useful for suitable animal enclosures and other exterior projects where a biocide-free clear coating is preferred. Apply two exceptionally thin coats and maintain the finish before the timber begins to grey.

Clear, Biocide-Free UV Protection

Osmo UV-Protection Oil 410 protects exterior timber without hiding its natural colour, knots or grain beneath an opaque coating. The finish remains microporous and breathable, allowing moisture vapour to move through the timber while helping to reduce swelling and shrinkage.

Unlike many film-forming exterior varnishes, it does not create a brittle layer that cracks, peels, flakes or blisters. When signs of weathering eventually become visible, the timber can normally be cleaned and refreshed without completely sanding away the existing finish.

Vertical Exterior Timber Only: UV-Protection Oil 410 is intended for upright exterior surfaces that shed water naturally. It is not the correct primary finish for horizontal decking, steps or exterior walking surfaces.

Why Choose Osmo UV-Protection Oil 410?

  • Clear UV protection for vertical exterior timber
  • Slows natural greying by a factor of up to 12
  • Biocide-free formulation

UV-Protection Oil 410 vs UV-Protection Oil Extra

Product Best For Main Difference
UV-Protection Oil 410 Vertical exterior timber where clear, biocide-free UV protection is preferred. Does not contain the active film protection used against mould, algae and fungal attack in the Extra formulation.
Osmo UV-Protection Oil Extra Vertical exterior timber in damp, shaded or more demanding conditions. Contains active ingredients that help protect the coating against mould, algae and fungal attack.

Which Version Should You Choose?
Choose 410 where a clear, biocide-free exterior finish is specifically wanted, including suitable animal enclosures.

Choose UV-Protection Oil Extra where additional protection of the coating against mould, algae and fungal attack would be beneficial.

Biocide-Free Does Not Mean Maintenance-Free: Dirt, dampness, shade and organic contamination can still encourage surface growth. Inspect and clean exterior timber regularly, particularly in sheltered or north-facing locations.

Which Osmo Exterior Product Is Right for Me?

Osmo Product Best For Key Difference
UV-Protection Oil 410 Vertical exterior timber requiring clear, biocide-free UV protection. Clear satin system that retains the natural timber appearance.
UV-Protection Oil Extra Vertical exterior timber requiring clear protection with added film preservatives. Available in clear satin and clear matt, with active protection against mould, algae and fungal attack within the coating.
UV-Protection Oil Tints Doors, windows and cladding where transparent colour and stronger visible UV resistance are required. Contains transparent coloured pigments while keeping the wood grain visible.
Osmo Decking Oil Horizontal decking, exterior steps and timber walking surfaces. Designed for the greater moisture and wear exposure experienced by horizontal timber.
Osmo Garden Furniture Oil Teak, hardwood tables, chairs, benches and exterior furniture. Specialist clear oil developed particularly for garden furniture.

Clear Protection and Natural Colour Change

UV-Protection Oil 410 is clear and allows the original timber colour and grain to remain visible. However, clear oil creates a natural wet-look effect that enriches and normally darkens untreated timber slightly.

Always Trial the Appearance: Clear does not mean invisible. Oak, cedar, pine, larch and other woods may become warmer or richer after oiling. Apply a representative test area and allow it to dry before treating the full project.

Clear Oil vs Transparent Colour

Finish Type Appearance UV Performance
UV-Protection Oil 410 Clear Keeps the natural timber colour visible while slightly enriching the grain. Strong clear UV protection when applied as a complete two-coat system.
UV-Protection Oil Tints Adds transparent colour while retaining visible grain and natural variation. Pigment generally provides stronger visible resistance to greying, particularly in deeper colours.
Opaque exterior colour Covers much more of the natural timber colour while retaining surface texture. Normally provides the strongest resistance to UV-related colour change.

Suitable Surfaces

  • Exterior wooden doors
  • Window frames
  • Window shutters
  • Timber cladding
  • Weatherboarding
  • Exterior fencing
  • Privacy screens
  • Pergolas
  • Carports
  • Balcony balustrades
  • Exterior gates
  • Summerhouses
  • Garden buildings

Suitable Timber Species

Timber Suitability Preparation Guidance
Oak, ash, beech, alder and birch Suitable subject to testing Ensure the timber is clean, absorbent and below approximately 20% moisture.
Pine and spruce Suitable Consider Osmo WR Base Coat where additional preservative protection is required.
Douglas fir and larch Suitable after weathering Allow resinous timber to weather until the surface becomes sufficiently absorbent.
Cedar Suitable after weathering Allow natural oils and extractives to reduce before application.
Teak, iroko, mahogany and other oily hardwoods Suitable subject to testing Allow ingredient-rich timber to weather adequately or degrease carefully before coating.
Pressure-treated timber Suitable after sufficient drying Allow excess treatment moisture and salts to disperse before application.
Thermally modified timber Suitable subject to testing Treat before substantial greying occurs and confirm consistent absorption.
Green oak Not suitable while wet Do not coat until timber moisture content is below approximately 20%.

Timber varies in resin, extractives, treatment chemicals and moisture. Always complete a representative trial before coating the full surface.

New Timber May Need to Weather First

New resinous and ingredient-rich exterior timber may contain natural oils, resin or treatment chemicals that prevent an exterior oil from penetrating and drying correctly.

Timber Condition Typical Preparation Reason
Ingredient-rich hardwood Allow a suitable exterior weathering period. Reduces natural oils and extractives that can interfere with absorption and drying.
Douglas fir or larch Allow resinous timber to weather before coating. Improves absorption and reduces the likelihood of sticky areas.
Pressure-treated timber Wait until fully seasoned and below the moisture limit. Fresh treatment moisture and salts can disrupt coating performance.
Recently sanded oily timber Weather or carefully degrease before applying oil. Sanding can expose fresh natural oils at the surface.

Simple Absorption Check:
Place a small amount of clean water on the dry timber. If it remains tightly beaded on the surface, the wood may not yet be ready to accept the finish. Timber that absorbs and darkens evenly is more likely to be ready, although a full product test is still required.

Using WR Base Coat

On suitable untreated softwood, Osmo WR Base Coat can be applied before UV-Protection Oil 410 where additional protection against blue stain, rot and insect attack is required.

Recommended Softwood System:
Apply Osmo WR Base Coat to suitable clean, dry and absorbent timber in accordance with its instructions. Once fully dry, complete the decorative system with two thin coats of UV-Protection Oil 410.

WR Base Coat Is Not a Finished Surface: It must be overcoated with a compatible exterior decorative finish. Always check suitability for the timber, project and intended use.

Using 410 as a Clear Topcoat

UV-Protection Oil 410 can also be used as a clear final coat over compatible coloured Osmo exterior finishes where a biocide-free topcoat is preferred.

  1. Apply the selected compatible coloured exterior finish.
  2. Allow the coloured coating to dry completely.
  3. Test the clear topcoat to check colour and sheen changes.
  4. Apply one exceptionally thin coat of UV-Protection Oil 410.
  5. Spread evenly with the grain and remove all heavy deposits.
  6. Protect the surface from rain and dew while drying.

Clear Oil May Enrich the Colour: A clear topcoat can make an underlying stain appear warmer or slightly darker. Always test the complete colour and topcoat system before treating the full project.

Cleaning and Reviving Existing Exterior Timber

Timber Condition Recommended Product Purpose
General dirt and surface contamination Osmo Decking Cleaner Cleaning suitable exterior wood before maintenance or recoating.
Greyed and weathered timber Osmo Wood Reviver Power-Gel Removes the grey weathered patina before applying a fresh coating system.
Greyed timber requiring scrubbing Osmo Decking Cleaning Scrub Brush Works cleaner or Reviver Gel into the grain and surface texture.
Clean but lightly worn coating Osmo UV-Protection Oil 410 Normally one exceptionally thin maintenance coat once the surface is clean and completely dry.

Do Not Oil Directly over Grey Timber: Applying clear oil over a greyed surface normally deepens the grey appearance rather than restoring the original timber colour. Use Wood Reviver Power-Gel before recoating where necessary.

Recommended Application Tools

Application Tool Best For How It Is Used
Osmo Flat Brush Doors, windows, cladding, fencing and detailed exterior joinery. Apply thinly with the grain and stretch the oil thoroughly into an even coating.
Osmo Microfibre Roller Larger smooth gates, doors and flat cladding sections. Load lightly, distribute the finish evenly and lay off with a brush where required.
Wood Coating Brushes Frames, rebates, edges, mouldings and difficult details. Select a suitable brush width and check corners and lower edges for runs or pooled oil.
Extension Poles and Handles High cladding and larger vertical areas. Use with compatible applicators while maintaining full control over coating thickness and overlap marks.

Professional Application Tip:
Complete individual boards, doors or panels from end to end wherever possible. Maintain a wet edge and avoid stopping halfway through a prominent section.

Apply exceptionally thinly. Heavy coats will not provide greater UV protection and may cause runs, tackiness, uneven sheen and slow drying.

Recommended Accessories

Best Conditions for Application

  • Apply to clean, dry and frost-free timber.
  • Timber moisture content must not exceed approximately 20%.
  • Choose a dry weather window with no rain expected during drying.
  • Avoid application in intense direct sunlight.
  • Do not coat timber that is excessively hot.
  • Avoid frost, heavy dew and very high humidity.
  • Provide good airflow while each coat dries.
  • Allow the first coat to dry completely before recoating.

Protect from Rain and Dew: Moisture reaching the coating before it has dried can cause marking, patchiness and delayed curing. Always check the forecast before beginning exterior work.

Surface Preparation

  • Ensure the wood is clean, dry, frost-free and free from dirt, grease, algae and contamination.
  • Timber moisture content must be below approximately 20%.
  • Allow new resinous, ingredient-rich or pressure-treated timber to weather until it becomes sufficiently absorbent.
  • Thoroughly clean compatible old microporous coatings.
  • Lightly sand worn, rough or uneven areas where necessary.
  • Completely remove old paint, varnish, lacquer and incompatible film-forming coatings.
  • Avoid sanding smooth exterior timber finer than approximately P120.
  • Restore greyed timber with Osmo Wood Reviver Power-Gel .
  • Consider Osmo WR Base Coat on suitable softwood where additional preservative protection is wanted.
  • Round sharp exterior edges where practical so the coating can protect them more effectively.
  • Ensure horizontal sections connected to vertical timber shed water correctly.
  • Remove all sanding dust.
  • Stir the oil thoroughly before and during application.
  • Complete a representative trial before coating the full area.

Protect All Faces Where Practical: On new doors, windows, cladding and joinery, apply the first coat to all faces, edges and end grain before installation wherever practical.

How to Apply Osmo UV-Protection Oil 410

  1. Confirm that the timber is clean, completely dry and ready to absorb oil.
  2. Stir the product thoroughly from the bottom of the tin. Do not thin.
  3. Cut in around edges, joints, frames and difficult areas with a suitable brush.
  4. Apply the first coat exceptionally thinly using an Osmo Flat Brush or suitable microfibre roller.
  5. Work along the timber grain and spread the oil thoroughly.
  6. Complete individual boards, doors or panels from end to end wherever possible.
  7. Maintain a wet edge and avoid heavy overlaps.
  8. Check rebates, joints, lower edges and corners for runs or pooled oil.
  9. Redistribute all visible excess before allowing the finish to dry.
  10. Allow approximately 12 hours’ drying under suitable conditions.
  11. Once the first coat is completely dry, apply a second equally thin coat.
  12. Protect the surface from rain, dew, dust and contamination while drying.

Professional Application Tip:
Two thin, even coats provide a better result than one heavy application. Excess oil will not increase UV performance and may cause runs, stickiness, prolonged drying and uneven sheen.

Renovating an Existing Finish

  1. Inspect the coating for dirt, fading, greying and localised failure.
  2. Clean the timber thoroughly.
  3. Use Wood Reviver Power-Gel where the wood has already greyed.
  4. Allow the surface to dry completely.
  5. Lightly sand loose, rough or uneven areas where required.
  6. Remove all dust.
  7. Apply one exceptionally thin coat where the existing finish remains sound.
  8. Where the coating has worn away or the timber has become bare, apply a complete two-coat system.
  9. Protect from rain and dew while drying.

Recoat Before Greying Begins:
Maintenance is simplest when one thin coat is applied as soon as the surface begins to look dry or faded. Waiting until the timber has greyed can require cleaning, de-greying and a complete two-coat treatment.

When Should the Timber Be Recoated?

  • The timber begins to look dry or faded.
  • Water no longer beads effectively.
  • South-facing areas become lighter than sheltered surfaces.
  • The coating appears thin around edges or exposed sections.
  • The finish remains intact but weather resistance is reducing.
  • Natural greying begins to appear through the clear coating.

Inspect Clear Finishes Regularly: Clear exterior coatings can show less obvious wear than coloured finishes. Check exposed timber at least annually and maintain it before the coating has worn away.

Important Application Notes

  • Use on suitable vertical exterior timber.
  • Do not use as the primary finish for horizontal decking.
  • Apply two exceptionally thin coats to bare timber.
  • One thin coat is normally sufficient for renovation where the existing coating remains sound.
  • Stir thoroughly before and throughout application.
  • Do not thin the product.
  • Timber moisture content must not exceed approximately 20%.
  • The stated UV protection requires a complete two-coat system.
  • Clear oil will normally enrich and darken timber slightly.
  • Heavy application can cause runs, stickiness and prolonged drying.
  • Allow approximately 12 hours between coats.
  • Protect the surface from rain and dew while drying.
  • Allow ingredient-rich timber to weather before coating.
  • Consider WR Base Coat on suitable softwood where additional protection is required.
  • Remove paint, varnish and lacquer completely before application.
  • Always complete a representative test area.
  • Use Wood Reviver Power-Gel where timber has already become grey.
  • Recoat before the existing protection wears away completely.
