Osmo UV-Protection Oil Tints is a transparent coloured exterior wood oil developed to protect vertical timber while enhancing its natural colour and keeping the wood grain clearly visible.

Designed for exterior doors, windows, cladding, fences, pergolas, summerhouses and other vertical timber surfaces, its natural oil-based formulation penetrates into the wood while creating a highly water-repellent, weather-resistant and breathable finish.

The transparent pigments help slow the natural greying caused by sunlight more effectively than a completely clear finish. The coating remains microporous, helps reduce swelling and shrinkage and will not crack, peel, flake or blister.

Wiltshire Wood Recommendation:
Choose UV-Protection Oil Tints when you want to retain a natural timber appearance but need stronger UV resistance than a completely clear exterior oil can normally provide.

Apply two exceptionally thin coats of the selected colour for the strongest colour and UV protection. Alternatively, where a lighter colour build is preferred, apply one coloured coat followed by one thin coat of compatible clear Osmo UV-Protection Oil Extra .

Transparent Colour with Exterior UV Protection

All untreated exterior timber gradually greys as sunlight and weather affect the surface. UV-Protection Oil Tints use transparent pigments to absorb and reduce some of this UV exposure while allowing the wood grain, knots and natural character to remain visible.

The colours have been developed to complement particular timber species, such as Oak or Red Cedar. They are not opaque paints and will not completely hide the original wood colour, grain or variation.

Darker Colours Generally Provide Stronger UV Resistance: Transparent pigment contributes to UV protection. Deeper shades normally provide greater resistance to visible greying than very pale or nearly invisible finishes. However, all exterior coatings require regular inspection and maintenance.

Why Choose Osmo UV-Protection Oil Tints?

  • Transparent coloured protection for vertical exterior timber
  • Helps slow UV-related greying and weathering
  • UV-protection factor up to 12 with the complete two-coat system
  • Allows the natural wood grain and character to remain visible
  • Contains active protection against mould, algae and fungal attack
  • Highly water-repellent and dirt-resistant
  • Microporous and breathable finish
  • Helps reduce swelling and shrinkage
  • Will not crack, peel, flake or blister
  • Suitable for doors, windows, cladding and fencing
  • Suitable for pergolas, summerhouses and vertical garden structures
  • Can be used as a complete coloured two-coat system
  • Can be completed with clear UV-Protection Oil Extra where appropriate
  • Easy to maintain without completely sanding the timber
  • Normally requires only one thin renovation coat
  • Available in sample sachets for testing on the actual timber

UV-Protection Oil Tints and UV-Protection Oil Extra

Product Best For Main Difference
UV-Protection Oil Tints Vertical exterior timber where transparent colour and stronger UV resistance are required. Contains colour pigments that complement the timber and help slow visible greying.
UV-Protection Oil Extra Vertical exterior timber where a clear matt or satin appearance is preferred. Clear protection without adding a visible timber-coloured pigment.
UV-Protection Oil 410 Vertical timber where a clear finish without the active protection used in Extra is specifically preferred. Standard clear UV system without the added mould, algae and fungal protection contained in the Extra range.

Current Osmo System: The coloured finishes in this range form part of the UV-Protection Oil Extra family and contain active film protection. They are for exterior use only.

Choose Your Colour

Colour Typical Appearance Best For
425 Oak A warm transparent oak tone that deepens the grain and adds a natural golden-brown appearance. Oak doors, oak windows, cladding and suitable pale timber where an enriched natural oak appearance is wanted.
428 Red Cedar A warm reddish-brown transparent shade designed to complement cedar and naturally red-toned timber. Cedar cladding, cedar doors, garden buildings and timber where a richer red-brown colour is preferred.
429 Natural A lightly white-pigmented finish that helps pale wood retain a more natural, untreated appearance. Pale exterior timber where the usual warming and darkening caused by clear oil needs to be reduced.
432 Light Oak A lighter and softer oak tone than 425 Oak, keeping the overall appearance warmer without making the timber too dark. Light oak, pale cladding and joinery where a subtle transparent oak colour is wanted.

Colour Names Are a Guide: Oak does not have to be coated with 425 Oak, and Red Cedar does not have to be used only on cedar. The existing timber colour, grain, weathering and absorbency will all affect the final appearance. Always use a sample sachet and complete a representative trial.

425 Oak vs 432 Light Oak

Feature 425 Oak 432 Light Oak
Colour depth Deeper and richer. Lighter and more subtle.
Typical appearance Warm golden to medium oak. Pale natural oak.
Grain emphasis More strongly enriches and defines the grain. Produces a softer, lower-contrast appearance.
UV protection The stronger pigment normally provides greater visible UV resistance. Provides colour protection but may weather sooner than a deeper shade.

Special Guidance for 429 Natural

Most clear exterior oils create a permanent wet-look effect that enriches and darkens timber. UV-Protection Oil 429 Natural contains balanced white pigment to reduce this colour change and help pale wood remain closer to its untreated appearance.

Apply 429 Natural Especially Thinly: On dark, reddish or heavily textured timber, the white pigment may appear cloudy or chalky. Over-application can also leave visible white deposits. Always test first and redistribute all visible pigment before allowing the finish to dry.

Which Osmo Exterior Product Is Right for Me?

Osmo Product Best For Key Difference
UV-Protection Oil Tints Vertical doors, windows, cladding, fencing, pergolas and summerhouses. Transparent timber-coloured protection with active film protection.
UV-Protection Oil Extra Vertical exterior timber where a clear matt or satin finish is preferred. Clear finish with mould, algae and fungal protection in the coating.
Osmo Decking Oil Horizontal decking, steps and exterior timber walking surfaces. Designed for the greater weather and wear demands placed on horizontal timber.
Osmo Garden Furniture Oil Hardwood tables, chairs, benches and suitable garden furniture. Specialist clear oil intended particularly for outdoor furniture.
Osmo WR Base Coat Suitable untreated softwood and exterior timber requiring additional preservative protection. Penetrating base coat used beneath the decorative finishing oil.

Suitable Surfaces

  • Exterior wooden doors
  • Window frames
  • Window shutters
  • Timber cladding
  • Weatherboarding
  • Fencing
  • Privacy screens
  • Pergolas
  • Carports
  • Balcony balustrades
  • Garden buildings
  • Summerhouses
  • Vertical timber panels
  • Exterior gates
  • Previously Osmo-treated vertical timber after suitable preparation

Vertical Exterior Timber Only: UV-Protection Oil Tints is not intended as the primary coating for horizontal decking, exterior steps or frequently walked-on surfaces. Use Osmo Decking Oil for these applications.

Suitable Timber Species

Timber Suitability Preparation Guidance
Oak, ash, beech, alder and birch Suitable subject to testing Ensure the timber is clean, absorbent and below approximately 20% moisture.
Pine and spruce Suitable Consider Osmo WR Base Coat for additional protection against blue stain, rot and insects.
Douglas fir and larch Suitable after weathering Allow resinous timber to weather so it becomes sufficiently absorbent before coating.
Cedar Suitable after weathering Allow natural oils and extractives to reduce before application.
Teak, iroko, mahogany and other oily hardwoods Suitable subject to testing Ingredient-rich timber may require approximately six weeks’ weathering or suitable degreasing before coating.
Pressure-treated timber Suitable after sufficient drying Allow excess moisture and treatment salts to disperse before application.
Thermally modified timber Suitable subject to testing Treat before substantial greying occurs and confirm even absorption.
Green oak Not suitable while wet Do not coat until timber moisture is below approximately 20%.

Natural oils, resin, treatment chemicals, moisture and previous weathering can all affect the final colour and drying. Always complete a representative test area.

Two Coloured Coats or a Clear Final Coat?

Coating System Appearance Protection
Two coats of the selected tint Strongest and most consistent colour build. Provides the strongest stated UV performance from the selected colour system.
One tinted coat plus clear Extra Lighter colour intensity with more natural variation visible. Provides a clear protective final coat, but the maintenance interval may be shorter than with two pigmented coats.
One tinted coat only Lightest colour effect. Not the complete recommended system for new bare exterior timber.

Two Coats Are Required for Maximum Protection: A single coloured coat or a coloured coat followed by clear oil may produce a lighter result, but it does not offer the same coloured pigment build or expected maintenance interval as two coats of UV-Protection Oil Tints.

Cleaning and Reviving Existing Timber

Timber Condition Recommended Product Purpose
General dirt and surface contamination Osmo Decking Cleaner Cleaning suitable exterior timber before maintenance or recoating.
Greyed and weathered timber Osmo Wood Reviver Power-Gel Removing the grey weathered patina and revealing more of the natural timber colour.
Greyed timber requiring mechanical scrubbing Osmo Decking Cleaning Scrub Brush Working cleaner or Reviver Gel into the grain and surface texture.
Sound but lightly worn coloured finish Matching UV-Protection Oil Tint Normally one thin maintenance coat once the timber is clean and dry.

Remove Grey Weathering Before Recoating: Applying tinted oil directly over greyed timber may produce a dull, dirty or uneven colour. Use Wood Reviver Power-Gel where the natural greying process has already begun.

Recommended Application Tools

Application Tool Best For How It Is Used
Osmo Flat Brush Doors, windows, cladding boards, fencing and detailed exterior joinery. Apply thinly with the grain and spread the tinted oil into a consistent transparent film.
Osmo Microfibre Roller Larger smooth doors, gates and flat cladding sections. Load the roller lightly, distribute the coating evenly and lay off with a brush where required.
Wood Coating Brushes Frames, edges, rebates, mouldings and difficult exterior sections. Select a suitable brush width and check corners for heavy colour build or runs.
Extension Poles and Handles Higher cladding and large vertical panels. Use with compatible rollers or applicators while maintaining control over coating thickness and overlap.

Professional Application Tip:
Work individual boards, doors or panels from end to end wherever possible. Maintain a wet edge and avoid stopping halfway through a prominent section, as dried overlaps may appear darker.

Stir regularly throughout application. Transparent pigment can settle, and poor mixing may cause visible colour variation between sections.

Coverage, colour and drying times are approximate. Timber species, porosity, texture, preparation, temperature, humidity, airflow and coating thickness will influence the result.

Best Conditions for Application

  • Apply to clean, dry and frost-free timber.
  • Timber moisture content must not exceed approximately 20%.
  • Choose a dry weather window with no rain expected during drying.
  • Avoid application in intense direct sunlight.
  • Do not apply to excessively hot timber.
  • Avoid frost, heavy dew and high humidity.
  • Provide good airflow during drying.
  • Allow each coat to dry completely before recoating.

Protect from Rain and Dew: Moisture reaching the coating before it has dried may cause patchiness, marking, pigment movement and prolonged drying.

Surface Preparation

  • Ensure the timber is clean, dry, frost-free and free from grease, algae, dirt and contamination.
  • Timber moisture content must be below approximately 20%.
  • Allow new ingredient-rich or resinous timber to weather until it becomes sufficiently absorbent.
  • Clean old compatible microporous finishes thoroughly.
  • Lightly sand worn or uneven surfaces where required.
  • Completely remove paints, varnishes, lacquers and incompatible film-forming coatings.
  • Do not sand smooth timber finer than approximately P120.
  • Revive greyed timber using Osmo Wood Reviver Power-Gel .
  • Consider Osmo WR Base Coat on suitable softwood where additional preservative protection is wanted.
  • Round sharp exterior edges to more than approximately 2mm where practical.
  • Ensure horizontal sections attached to vertical timber have sufficient fall to shed water.
  • Remove all sanding dust.
  • Stir the tinted oil thoroughly before and throughout application.
  • Complete a representative trial before coating the full area.

Consistent Preparation Produces Consistent Colour: Different sanding grades, weathering and timber porosity can produce visible changes in colour intensity. Prepare the complete area using the same process.

How to Apply UV-Protection Oil Tints

  1. Confirm the timber is clean, dry and ready to absorb oil.
  2. Stir the product thoroughly from the bottom of the tin. Do not thin.
  3. Cut in around edges, frames, joints and difficult areas using a suitable brush.
  4. Apply the first coat exceptionally thinly using an Osmo Flat Brush or suitable microfibre roller.
  5. Work carefully along the timber grain and spread the coating thoroughly.
  6. Complete individual doors, boards or panels from end to end where possible.
  7. Maintain a wet edge and avoid heavy overlaps.
  8. Check corners, rebates, joints and lower edges for runs or pigment build-up.
  9. Redistribute all visible excess before allowing the coating to dry.
  10. Allow approximately 12 hours’ drying with good ventilation.
  11. Apply the second coloured coat equally thinly for maximum colour and UV protection.
  12. Alternatively, apply one thin coat of clear UV-Protection Oil Extra as the final coat where a lighter colour build is preferred.
  13. Protect the surface from rain, dew and contamination while drying.

Professional Application Tip:
Stir regularly while working. Pigment can settle in the tin, particularly during larger projects. Failure to remix the product may cause the first and last sections to appear different.

Apply thinly. Heavy coats do not provide better UV protection and can lead to slow drying, runs, uneven colour and increased sheen.

Applying 429 Natural

  1. Stir thoroughly to distribute the white pigment.
  2. Apply an exceptionally thin and even coat with the timber grain.
  3. Avoid heavy overlaps, particularly around edges and joints.
  4. Inspect the surface from several angles while wet.
  5. Redistribute any visible white, cloudy or chalky pigment.
  6. Allow the first coat to dry fully.
  7. Apply the second coat equally thinly.
  8. Test carefully before using 429 Natural on dark or reddish timber.

Renovating an Existing Coloured Finish

  1. Inspect the timber for dirt, wear, greying and coating failure.
  2. Clean the surface thoroughly.
  3. Use Wood Reviver Power-Gel where the timber has already greyed.
  4. Allow the timber to dry completely.
  5. Lightly sand loose, rough or uneven areas where necessary.
  6. Remove all dust.
  7. Apply one exceptionally thin coat of the matching tint where the existing finish remains sound.
  8. Where the timber has become bare or heavily weathered, apply a full two-coat system.
  9. Protect the coating from rain and dew while drying.

Recoat Before the Colour Disappears:
Maintenance is normally straightforward when the timber is cleaned and given one thin coat as soon as fading becomes visible. Waiting until the surface is bare or fully greyed requires significantly more preparation.
